xi. inner child
i stare at you, wondering how you found me, my hidden,
forgotten, minature, peering from grass, version of myself
who fell behind bushes, didn't show their face unbidden,
but your wet footprints painted scenes across the bookshelf
and if you're me, then you'd remember when we drove
to the store to pick up wood and stain and nails while
hoping that we could skip learning how to use the stove
as all we imagined was burning our fingertips with a smile
as we always wanted to prove ourselves to someone more,
to anyone that could somehow question whether we should
be here, standing here, staring at our screen, or at the floor,
and i'm holding out a hand to tell you that i learned we could.
(there's galaxies here, love, but your eyes hold the stars.)
