I'm writing a story where a girl and her family live in the French countryside in a beautiful Villa... You know the type- big fountains and lovely draping greenery out front, pools in the back, dirt road, etc. What I was wondering seems as though it should be rather obvious. The 'yard' out front, with the fountain and a garden and trees and such, what would it be called? The first thing that came to mind was a courtyard, but by definition, courtyards are enclosed, and that's not what I'm envisioning. Does anyone have the correct term for it, or should I just stick with the term courtyard?

Lemme get this straight... they live in a manor, right?

I'll look it up in the Jane Austen book I brought, thought that would be English terminology. :P

Way, way back in the 1988 Presidential election, then Vice President George H W Bush had a phrase he liked to use: "A Thousand Points of Light." It refers to the idea that a community is made up of people who contribute in a thousand, different small ways, but with each helping to illuminate their community. It's a phrase I think about a lot when it comes to YWS. Looking forward, the site will continue to change and grow, but it will always remain a community dedicated to promoting creative writing as a favorite pastime.
