“Does that ever happen?” Ky asked with a small smile.

"One can dream." He rolled his eyes good-humoredly and waved as he approached. "Ahoy, Tomhas! Anneliese! Look who I found." Tomhas turned and smiled as he saw Ky. "Oh, hello! Anneliese told me you were out here."

“Hi!” Ky grinned at him. Somehow being out here was far warmer than inside, despite the snow. “How’s it going?”

"Absolutely wonderful. My nose is about to fall off." He tapped it for emphasis; the end had turned red. "How are you?"

“Good!” she answered brightly. “My nose is more intact, I think. Been out here less time.”

"Evidently." He blew into his hands. "I've taken it upon myself to get the young'uns tired out before dinner, which is proving more time consuming than I'd anticipated. Wick's been a great help." "Just doing my duty as an uncle," Wick replied, sweeping into a bow.

"Races? Now that's a thought...hey, kids! First one to climb onto the mountain cat's head gets a hug from their mother!" There was a collective squeal, then the children took off in the direction of the mountain cat. Tomhas nodded in satisfaction and turned to Ky. "Excellent idea! Hadn't considered it."

Ky looked after the kids. Loquitur seemed a lot less anxious about the children than she was. But she looked back at him and grinned. "Happy to help... my papa had me running a lot. Too much energy."

"Exactly what I should have been doing as a boy. Running is a cure-all for people like us!" Tomhas watched as Oscar and Mattathias reached the cat at the same time. Marcella was slower, but she looked determined.

Ky grinned. She liked being lumped in with 'us' in that statement. "Well, you still turned into a great racer, despite it all."

"Aha, thank you! I bet I couldn't outrun Mattathias when he's older, though. Look at him go!" Mattathias was giving a valiant effort trying to climb the icy surface, but he wasn't getting any grip. Oscar was trying to go up the tail with marginally more success. Marcella was going for a different approach, trying to use a small tree to get onto the beast's back.

Ky watched them all, assessing their strategies. Even as children, it was interesting to watch thought processes and behaviors. "... I hope she wins."

"Heh, I'd bet a clapper or two on her. She's quick as a whip." He watched as Mattathias fell again. The little boy sat staring up at the cat's head, then began to cry. "Oh, oops." Tomhas hurried forward to comfort him. Marcella abandoned her efforts, stumbling out of the tree to see what was wrong with her twin.

She felt bad for Mattathias -- but was, honestly, even happier that Marcella had given up the contest for the sake of her brother. Compassion was so, so much better than speed or strength. Ky glanced up at Wick.
