“…true.” She grimaced. “Is there anything else he likes we could get?”

Bay considered it. "I'm not sure material goods are going to solve this one, Ky. Not this time."

Ky nodded solemnly, glancing away. It was worth a shot. She was out of other ideas at this point.

“Sven is still making it,” Ky said. “I think he’s going to ship it directly home so I can give it to him there with my siblings.”

“What’s a heart box?” Jerica looked between them curiously.

"It's a tradition up here," Bay replied. "A way to welcome a newborn child into the family."

“Oh…” Jerica was quiet for a moment, mulling this over. “Wait, then who’s ‘him’ that you’re giving it to? I thought you had a sister?”
Ky blushed and pulled her coats around herself more tightly, looking away. “I’m getting one for my father.”
Jerica furrowed her brow. “Why?”
Ky blushed even more and managed, “because he doesn’t have one.”
“…which father?” Jerica asked, tone more accusatory than she meant. It didn’t make sense why the mopey one wouldn’t have one; and it also didn’t make sense why Ky would be referring to their real father as ‘my’ not ‘our’ or buying him shit when she knew fully well Zander wasn’t gonna let either of them meet him.
Ky blushed more, flustered by the questioning and feeling attacked. “Tomhas.”
“Why doesn’t he have one?”
“Cause he doesn’t,” Ky answered sourly. “Yet.”
“Why not?” Jerica pressed. “Shouldn’t he have an old one by now? If you get one when you’re born you’re not supposed to get one from your kid right?” She looked to Bay for confirmation, not sure why Ky was getting so huffy about this.

Bay gave a nod, looking ahead. "...He wasn't given one."

"No, it was." He kept his gaze ahead. "The Ashes weren't inclined to give him one. He wasn't born under good circumstances."

“Ohhh, ‘cause the whole…?” Jerica gestured vaguely with a snap, glancing over at Ky. She blushed and hid her face. Jerica nodded once. Rape. Right. She’d heard about that. “Got it. That makes more sense.”

"Right." Bay dipped his head. "It's been a rather sensitive subject."
