Aleth hissed in pain but forced himself to keep them in the water. He needed to make a friend out of her. “Thank you.”

Sera dipped her head slightly and went to her cabinets, drawing out a few choice instruments before going to the cauldron and dumping them in. "You two." She pointed to two of the guards, who had been standing about in the doorway, unsure of what to do with themselves. "I'll need you to stay and hold him down while I cut off his toes. Can you do that?" Both nodded quickly. "Yes, ma'am."

“Now wait just a minute.” Aleth curled his toes, pulling his feet closer to himself. It was different to acknowledge it needed to happen, and actually seeing the saw.

(It'd be more like some really nasty looking pliers, I think)
"It's going to happen, whether you like it or not." Sera glanced at him. "Sorry to be the bearer of bad news."

“I…” Aleth’s chest went tight. “Don’t like this plan.”

"It's not a plan, it's a necessity." Sera's eyes flickered to the cauldron. "I can offer you a couple drinks of strong liquor to calm your nerves, but not much else."

Aleth groaned in self-pity. “Can’t you at least knock me out first?”

"We don't do that here. There's no safe way to monitor your condition." Sera took out a set of tongs and cloth, then began to scoop out the tools. "If you pass out during the surgery that's another story."

“I see no difference,” Aleth protested, eyeing the guards as they shuffled forward. “Wait! Wait! … liquor?”

"Yes. Just a bit, mind you." Sera brought the tools over to a nightstand beside the bed and rolled up her sleeves. "Shall I fetch the bottle?"

“Yes,” Aleth answered quickly. Not that it’d be tolerable either way. But maybe it’d help just a bit. “Please.”

Sera dipped her head and went back to the cabinet, taking out a long drinking horn. She offered it to him. "Two good swallows, then you're done."

“I still don’t like this,” Aleth protested but put the bottle to his lips and took as big of a drink as he could manage, grimacing as he swallowed. “I… this…” he sighed.

"I know." Sera softened slightly. "It's not easy."

Aleth took a deep breath and sighed heavily, then gulped as much of the liquor as he could, deciding there was no point in delaying the inevitable. May as well get his hell over with…. Well, this part of it anyway. The recovery would no doubt take weeks after the fact. He sighed again.
