2023 NAPO BADGES

Image

Read on to learn how you can earn different badges this April for participating in National Poetry Writing Month! If you complete the requirements for a badge, make a post below with the link to your NaPo thread (and/or comments or WFPs) and the name of the badge you're claiming by May 6.

Writing Poems

Most of these badges are not stackable, meaning you can't earn both the First Sprouts and the Early Bloomer badge - if you write 15 poems, you'll only get an Early Bloomer badge. The exception to this is that you can earn both NaPo Completion and Poem-A-Day!

First Sprouts You did it! Complete and log 5 poems during the month of April and you'll get a nifty NaPo badge for your hard work.

Early Bloomer It seems you've got a bit of a green thumb! A poem every-other-day in April is not a small feat. If you complete at least 15 poems over April and post them in your NaPo thread, you'll win the "Early Bloomer" badge for your dedication.

NaPo Completion You're a pretty prolific poet! Earn this badge by writing and posting 30 poems in your NaPo thread. The only criteria is that these poems must be written during the month of April - and please make sure they're numbered in your thread. There are no requirements for the form or length of a poem for it to "count" towards this badge!

Poem-A-Day Champion This is the traditional NaPo challenge! To win this you must write at least 1 poem every day of April with the correct time-stamps in your NaPo thread. (Timezones are tricky, so there's a little leniency if you miss a day or two as long as there are 30 poems total in your thread at the end of the month. However, the majority of your poems should be written and posted on their respective days! Feel free to message one of the Poetry Mods if you are unsure whether you've earned this badge.)

To claim any of these badges, leave the link to your NaPo thread below and make sure that your poems are numbered within your thread.

Community

NaPo is mostly an individual effort, but the great thing about YWS is that we get to support each other as a community while we take on the challenge! These badges are about spreading encouragement, supporting our fellow poets, and joining in on fun activities! For participation to count towards any of these badges, it must take place during the month of April.

Garden Challenge Sometimes we need a bit of encouragement to get to the NaPo finish line! To claim this badge, spread some sunshine by leaving 20 unique comment in NaPo threads other than your own. These comments should be left in at least 5 different threads.

Starter Seeds If you plant 5 unique comments in NaPo threads during NaPo this year you can earn the "Starter Seeds" badge! Make sure that your comments aren't all in the same person's thread (there's a different badge for that).

Bushel of Apples You shouldn't put all your eggs in the same basket...but you can put all your apples in the same bushel! It's nice to have someone who consistently reads your poems as they develop over the course of the month, and that's what this badge is for. If you leave 5+ unique comments all in the same NaPo thread this April, you can claim the "Bushel of Apples" badge!

Jam Collector It's time to make some yummy jam! Collect jam jars (ie links) from at least 5 different Poetry Jams, Write-ins or Poetry Discussions. To count for "attendance" you need to be in the jam for at least 20 minutes and contribute to the discussion. If the times of mod-run write-ins don't work for your schedule, you can also run your own and get others on the site to attend! To count a jam that you ran yourself for this badge, make sure to post your write-in link on the Poetry Jam Club (and consider subscribing to the club, too, so you don't miss other people's write-ins!).

To claim any of these badges, leave links to the comments you wrote or WriterFeed Pads you attended down below. Please make sure to number your links.

Contests

PCrewPick Recipient New this year! Your resident Poetry Mods will be highlighting a new NaPo poem every single day of April using #PCrewPick! This badge is awarded to anyone who receives a #PCrewPick shoutout this NaPo.

ThePeoplesPick Recipient New this year! Similar to the old PoetryShoutout hashtag, ThePeoplesPick hashtag allows any user to shoutout their favourite NaPo poems they've read throughout the month. If someone gives your poem a shoutout using this hashtag, you will be awarded the "ThePeoplesPick Recipient" badge! (We encourage you to use #ThePeoplesPick on the People's Tab to highlight all the amazing poetry that YWSers write this NaPo! There's no limits on how many shoutouts you can give, and you'll be sure to brighten someone's day.)

April Madness Finalist If you make it to the last round of April Madness you will receive your own, highly-sought-after, limited edition April Madness badge! And, new this year, First and Second place finalists will win official YWS merch! Check out the official April Madness thread when it gets posted for more info on what these prizes may look like.

You don't need to complete any steps to "claim" these badges.

---

If you don't post below recording your activity and the badges you are eligible for, you may not be awarded your badge(s). Poetry and comments for badges must be written in April.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do collaborative poems count towards the Poem Count? Unfortunately, no! For any badge related to poem-writing, you must write all your poems individually. But if you wrote a collab poem in a Poetry Jam, you can count the Poetry Jam towards your Jam Collector badge!

What do you mean by "unique comments" for the Garden Challenge? This means that you can't just copy and past a generic comment like "Great poems!" or "Good luck!" twenty times and then claim the Garden Challenge Badge. It doesn't mean that comments have to be paragraphs long - they can be short and sweet - but they do have to be written uniquely for a given thread. And remember that the purpose of this challenge isn't to review a person's thread or poems (we save that for the publishing center), so it's probably best to avoid lengthy critiques of punctuation or rhyme schemes. Stick to compliments and encouragement as much as possible!

What is a Poetry Jam? A poetry jam is a write-in where people get together to write poetry! Whoever is hosting the poetry jam will post the link to a WriterFeed Pad, Rise-up pad, or other shared writing pad in the Poetry Jam Club so that other users can join. Sometimes poetry jams are planned in advance and advertised around the site, while sometimes they're spontaneous. Often whoever is leading will supply a few optional prompts for people to use as inspo! More information about hosting and participating can be found here.

How do I claim my badges? Easy! Start a log below in this thread where you can collect all the relevant links for a given badge. For instance, for any of the poetry-writing badges you can simply put the link to your NaPo thread and state which badge you've earned. For community badges, you can collect and number the links to your NaPo comments or poetry jams. Just be sure to clarify in your post which badge or badges you have completed the requirements for.

What if I'm aiming for the "Poem A Day" badge but I have an emergency and miss posting one day? Things happen and time zones are weird! The majority of the poems need to be posted with close to the same time stamp (if you post at 1 am every day, I'm just going to assume you're not in my time zone, that's okay!). You can accidentally miss up to two days, but the end total needs to be 30.

How long do my poems need to be to count? @lliyah wrote a pretty snazzy two word poem a few years back! Poems can be any length or form, they just need to be properly numbered in your thread. If you're really not sure if something you wrote "counts" as a poem, you can always ask a poetry mod - but I can almost guarantee you we will say it counts!

Other questions? Ask away!
When you're faced with something you don't understand, I think the most natural thing but also least interesting thing you can be is afraid.
