are you certain this is the story you want to tell? the monarchy is long reaching and our lifespan is numbered, three to seven, with the minute hand ticking backwards. but when she says, 'ascend', when she asks, 'are you devoted', when she says, 'here is my death', will you unhinge yourself for her taking?
the queen of salt and honey cursed the ground we sleep on, yet presents her crown, disassembled, to find our future in its thorns. here is the truth: it is the same as it has ever been, right down to the dirt under our nails.
rise, we are begged, for here is my death, sweet and soft as newborn sin.

i can feel your palm, soft against my heart. how did you know this is what i longed for? tenderness to reshape my insides into something whose face i can recognize. these are the only eyes i can't meet. but your bones are fairy lights, lighting my way home in the dark. how did you know this is what i longed for? a lover, sweet and calm like i could never be, a skirt pulled taut over knees still rubbed raw,, spiderwebs in our hair. i still think i am secretly the devil, making my home among abandoned prayers. i said if you asked nice, i would spread myself thin for you, inside my locked cage of a heart and no one else could break me the way you did when you said there was only room for one tragedy in this play and no one else could wear that smile the way i did. ( how did you know this is what i longed for?)

today i draw a sword through the heart of the world. i have missed steel in my hands, this reflection of my one true self. there is no justice, only the devil in his tower, three coins balanced on his horns and it's here that I ask, what is knighthood if not a promise made in reverse? remember my peace, four crows tangled in the bedsheets, each a choke hold spilling into a planet, a never- ending sun. (do you know what feathers taste like? bones in my mouth and on your tongue, sugarwax candy sweet enough to sin in. together we are death, the hermit, the empress on her throne. i see the rosebuds in your eyes and they can only be temperance, burning me up inside.) (if only i were the king of swords, ten blades at your throat. but my legacy is the fool, a wand in my hand and a coin in my palm, the ace of cups drowning me alive in your love.)

sing me a bed of roses, two crows in among the thorns. this is the life i was meant to live, crushed petals on my spine and a lit match in my mouth. my mother bore me in a falling star, dressed me in flames before i could walk. my childhood is a bloody heart beating black, a hand around my wrist, metacarpals spelling out the hanged man. oh to be the fool, careless and cerulean, a sapling grown to dust. again i hold a sword to my crown, knight myself to judgment, spread myself thin between ten cups all in a row.
("shhh," the moon says. "shhh," but there is no comfort in a mirror.)

tonight in this house, we are quiet in our dread. every lullaby sounds like wings beating against a window pane and the only cure for silence is to live through it. (we will watch ourselves sleep, and in the dreaming land sing ourselves whole. swallow me alive, princess, my hands belong to you.)

come here, girl show me your battle wounds, your feathers falling out. on the back of your knees are the ancient words for prayer and destruction. on your spine is the pathway home. bear the earth on your shoulders, because he would drain you dry to become king. come here, girl, and show me your battle wounds, your feathers bleeding black. you call yourself crow, but you bleed the blood of gods. come here, girl, and use your wounds as guns. there's a knife at your back and a gun at your hip and a sword in your hands. you call yourself crow, the carrion eater of something divine, and you bleed the blood of the universe, holding you back, holding you dear, holding you close, calling you home.

I always like reading your poems. The long ones, where you weave images together into a beautiful painting, and the little ones, where you say something simple and let us feel the implications. I think the "softest place to hide" is my current favourite.
I hope you write more (but it's okay if you don't)! <3
"The fact is, I don't know where my ideas come from. Nor does any writer. The only real answer is to drink way too much coffee and buy yourself a desk that doesn't collapse when you beat your head against it." --Douglas Adams
there is not enough strangeness to compensate for my silence, an empty gaping hole that should be filled with glass castles and invitations to life. instead all that is here is a key turning counterclockwise on the way in, and ribcages stuffed with lace. i forget the way back and lost the way forward and the only thing here between the two of us is the never-ending thought, the wish without words.

this is the breakdown. everything you wanted, a capslock paradise--tell me what you want and I'll show you what you'll never have, far from everything you knew. what does your heart sound like, spoken like a crown? there is blood in my mouth, strawberry sweet, like your inner thigh pressed against my hand. i'm lonely, you said. i'm lonely.
this is the burnout, a midnight calling. your name is an island in my love. nothing will haunt us here. at night i hear only the wolves. at night i only hear mars blowing his horn.
(no matter where you take me, the water will always rise. My hands will split in two, and your ghosts will always be there to welcome you home.)
