childish times

“take care,” comes the whisper from
my phone, final words in a conversation
i hated. it couldn’t be over, no, no,

it feels like we’re still catching sunshine
on our palms, the taste of light and
cheerfulness gracing our tongues.

sweet like the honey dripping from
a golden bottle, that child-like wonder
of a world that hadn’t buried dreams

i find them now, squinting at the broken,
discolored shattered pieces hidden
by years of disuse, sunk into the sand.

i piece together those cherished remains,
happiness rising to fight against the
developing despair as “goodbye” arrives.

paths finally meeting

is there a possibility for our lives to cross?
waiting for a glimpse and then hit pause
there’s a current running in our veins
anticipation as a coin ready to be tossed
has to be possible to meet on rail trains.

can you see the light blinking up ahead?
breathing in sync as we leave our beds
colors flickering to follow a trail,
desperate for our paths to be wed,
crossing the bridge and grasped the rails.

envelopes open to hopeful comments
whispers bring forth our advancement
finally close enough to reach out
still delicate about the treatment
doubts prominent in our eyes laid about.

we caress our patches of exposed skin,
able to speak about where we’ve been
history can be found everywhere,
soulmates spoken in air besides written,
and we’re helpless to souls left bare.

egg shell dreams

egg shells line the counter,
all with the same off-white pallor,
and ever-so shiny features.

i swipe the pieces in my palms,
and pour all of their possibilities
that they hold, the ideals and
gestures held within, into
the dumpster of finality.

i swallow my dreams, residue
of that bitter-sweet taste
of happiness thrown up with
the sting of disappointment.

they fall into a barren field,
never growing past my ankles,
struggling to grasp at a life
that never gave them the time.

the plants always shrivel,
under my toes, my weight
an over-bearing and constant
reminder that sometimes
dreams don't grow to fruition.

my reflection is hidden in
these shells, and i can barely
contain myself in the fallen
shards, stomping out the parts
that i couldn't keep.

evening tunes

the singer's crooning in
otherwise peaceful surroundings.

my limbs feel heavy, especially
in my weight-filled head,
feeling flushed against the
cool evening air.

my thoughts are stuck whirling
blood rushes skywards.

{and then the track changes}

new sounds emerge the
quiet landscape.

i can hear the strokes of
the pencil in my hand.
i almost don't want to
breathe, scared to invade
this delicate contraption
of a tranquil neighborhood.

we're at one end of a
cul-de-sac, the sun is
starting to set.
light recedes as the
minutes tick by.

i'm sad to face the
eventual fade of that
golden haze, caught
seeing it drift away. but,
i welcome the promises
night beckons to me.

a new beginning with
the soon-to-be sun beams
tomorrow morning, just
as another song starts.

fellow wanderer

does this mean that we've
hit the promised land?
walking towards a light
strolling hand-in-hand?

don't know if I could deal
with you slipping away,
I've grown too much,
to keep you at bay.

I only want to wander
if you're with me,
lost in the stars,
reflecting on the sea.

will you come join?
I reach my hand out
and dare to dream,
without a doubt.

from dust to grass

they’re a traveling family,
fleeing an impending doom
for monsters in machines
and upper-class businesses
invading once beloved lands.

they’re wishing for their
dust land fairytale,
from the barren bowl of
Oklahoma, to the glistening
gardens of California,
birds harmonizing in song.

all they picture is a perfect
landscape, for a few farmers
and a pack of straggler kids,
desperation leaking from
harried expressions.

waterfalls of hopes and dreams
rejuvenate the ground
underneath them, weeds
gather by their feet and follow
a path to their fated escape.

leaving home

i packed last week, loaded boxes,
stuffed to their brims, rich of
forgotten memories in the
maelstrom of my eighteen years.

close my eyes to hide against the
rush of hurried glimpses my
mementos spark within me.

candles fuse the past with scents
from that knew blackout dinner
by a handful of flickering lights

the need to our sacred ice cream
was thick in the air, melted away
in the cold evening hours,
unaccustomed to the warmth of a
loving family, gathered around.

apparent smiles and evident relief
when the weary radio announced
the power’s return, artificial light
had never looked so good before.

that familial bond comforts me
as i grab my luggage, trailing
whispers of laughter and
cherished scenes.

one last breath of microwaved
oatmeal and sweet yellow cake
before i leave.

echoing wisp

she floats above all,
dress dragging along,
nails stick out, brown
and falling apart.

there’s a musty scent,
nasty rust caked on,
the trail entering both
rooms of the shaky,
unstable foundation.

pieces break off with
every rupture and near
collapse of the structure.

nobody lives here, not
after the graveyard
grew, all the buried
memories in tombstones.

there are lights flashing
overhead, a faint
murmur of a woman
humming the blues to the
pattering of the rain.

stair connection

i race across the room, skipping in time to a
song pumping loud from my speakers

listen close to the muted chords, musical
scene taking place at a dimmed-light bar.

there’s a singer on the jukebox, in a corner,
humming ‘bout them good ol’ days an’
how life’ll never be the same as then.

i crouch down on the old, creaky staircase,
feel the matted carpet under my feet.

there’s a picture catching the light,
all cropped hair and lousy smiles.

wistful wishing for the past, trace our
footsteps in the drifting sand, hazy sight
of illusionary people and children.

salt water in the air, tantalizing to
walk through, disgusting to swallow,
the scent heavy in the air.

the music’s still pouring lyrics, strums
of sorrowful stories filling the house,
oh such wondrous flavors i can taste.

changing words

the words furl off my tongue,
daggers burying deep inside,
meld between shifting ideas.
everything’s spilled out now

the flip of a coin determines
our fate, whether we hide,
plants dipping their leaves,
sinking back underground

or we could rejoice in turn,
spring forth with new rigor
and display our pleasure
by sprouting delicate buds.

the sunlight accompanies us
regardless of our current
state of mind, decide between
opening or closing the window.

we can hide the truth in our
backyard, barricade openings
to not let a single slip leak in,
or keep a box in the attic.

or we let the words escape,
harmless, and bide time until
the wind carries them away.

until the truth comes out
again.

us and we

swallowing pain is simple
we’re both the issue
broken from past misuse
that curve of a dimple
that graces your cheek
our love was at its peak

smiles once exchanged
lightness in our step
the floor newly swept
us now left estranged
fingers clenched in front
still trembling with want
