tadpoles

i still see our reflection in this pond

the one where we'd lean over the

edge, holding each other's hand with our
fingers intertwined

looking down at the tadpoles

~*~

look at them swim in sweet harmony
watch them follow the pack of

uncertainty

i still remember

my back still remembers the ice cold lockers
freezing my mind to the core with their mockery

my ears still hear their shrill voices
filling my mind with self-doubt and hatred

my eyes still see that miserable reflection in the fogged up mirrors
of this shell of a girl i couldn't recognize

my heart still shakes at the mention of her name
the one that once filled my soul with peace

the picture i never saw

somehow i was so hung up over that fact

that i would never make it to the collage of pictures

that you'd hang on the mantel

somehow that mattered to me so much that

i'd weep and question your love for me

but now i know that you always kept a picture of me

tucked away in a place i never thought was there

i never thought to look in your heart

cloudy thoughts

she's just a girl with her head in the clouds

not sure if she's okay or just in a haze

"is being caught in the middle of a fog such a bad thing?"

she'd tell herself, trying to make sense of the cluster

of thoughts floating above her head

you said you loved me too

i told myself i'd have more time

to tell you all the things i felt

to ask how you felt and grow more

but now the weight of things has set in

and i didn't know how to feel

do i cry?

do i stay silent?

do i say the things i wanted to say?

instead i just held you and told you i loved you

and you said you loved me too

no, not yet

i told myself that i can't cry and i must not weep
no, not yet
i must stay strong for them, i can't show i'm weak
but that damned lump in my throat,
this burning in my face
it's making me feel as if i might pass out
the more i try to strain
but the hot tears flew down my burning cheeks

one

at

a

time

don't cry, no, not yet
she told me, handing me a tissue
and telling me to cry in the dark

The Sweet Peach Cobbler

She pulled herself on the kitchen counter
looking back at her father saying,

"Daddy, what are you making?"

He smiled and pat her head, telling her
it was a special recipe for sweet peach cobbler

Oh how sweet the peach cobbler was!
Passed down from his father to him and yet
the recipe never aged.
It always said sweet, no matter the time of day.
It danced across her taste buds and
tickled her throat as it went down

Oh how sweet the peach cobbler was.

May is a time for healing

oh how i can't wait for May to come
with her sweet scents of magnolias
and the sound of the bike chimes
from the excited children
who were so ready for May to come

the sun shines so bright in May
and the flowers remind me to
take a step back and heal
from the bitter coldness i felt

last winter
