Extended Deadline!

Hello, and welcome to the first ever Adventures in Writing contest!

In keeping with the last several articles of this column, this contest will be centered on description. It's an issue a lot of writers have. How do you strike the balance between too much description and not enough? How do you write description that's interesting?

For some of my tips, check out the last three articles from Adventures in Writing:

Basic Tips
Tips for Character Description
Tips for Setting Description

So what do you need to do?

In 1000 words or less, dazzle me with your best description. It can be block description or description slipped into a short scene, setting description or character description or both. Either way, it needs to do several things:

- Avoid boring lists of description.
- Paint a picture for the reader.
- Detail the important or unusual details of a setting or character.

This is a contest for fiction. Your submission can be fantasy, horror, romance, or any other genre--the only limit is that it must be prose, not poetry. Although your submission can be only up to 1000 words, there is no minimum word count requirement. Description doesn't have to be long to be great!

Please note: Only one entry is allowed per contestant.

I will be judging each entry. Submit your entries by PM .

The submission deadline is March 31st, 2015. I will read the entries and announce the winners on April 25th.

The Prizes

- The First Place winner will receive 1000 points and a review of any work of their choice, in any literary category (including poetry and novel/chapter).
- The Second Place winner will receive 500 points and a review of any work of their choice, in any literary category.
- The Third Place winner will receive 250 points and a review of any work of their choice, in any literary category.

All three winners will be announced in the forum and in Squills, the YWS newsletter.

Sounds like me. Not because I want to beat TimmyJake
Count me in. Might be a chance to write a good scene for my novel...

Also, if it's potentially only a short piece, do we have to post it as a work on YWS?

You have two options. You can either post it on YWS and send me the link in a PM, or you can just send me your entry via PM, without posting it on YWS. All the pieces will be short (1000 words or less), so that's your choice. It doesn't have to be a complete story or even a complete scene, as long as it's good description that could form part of a scene or story. (Meaning, it can't be character notes or anything like that--it has to actually be some drafted writing, but it doesn't have to be a complete piece, either.)

Just one entry per contestant! That's because a) I'm the only judge at present, so it keeps from getting overwhelmed, and b) if someone submitted two or three REALLY GOOD entries, I wouldn't want to give them all three awards, but I also wouldn't want to not award deserving entries, you know? So just one.

However, your one can describe a character, a setting, or both. Just make sure it's your best!

Now I am done, I don't know what the main description is XD
I've kinda done a mash of everything. If I can make readers picture what is happening, then it has worked.

@rhiasofia Just PM it to me. (I know I responded late because I was at work, so just have it to me by tomorrow and I'll count it!)
