My sister pooled her money and got a camera this year, which, to my discomfort, is better than mine. With two photographers in the family, this has led to some natural and productive competition, and I've had to work extra hard to erase the edge in image quality.

Throughout this summer, I've been dragging my camera to a menagerie of places, but most commonly a set of fairs in my hometown, and the big Minnesota State Fair in my adopted hometown of St. Paul. Here's a set of photos from this latest season, including a retake of a photo I got wrong last year, and a picture of sunflowers, that is the only one to depart from this theme.

The spoilers contain a description of the shot, but I'd rather you read them after forming opinions, if what you saw and what I was trying to put together didn't mesh, then please be honest about it!

The goal here was to provide a total mismash of colors and shapes, familiar and unfamiliar, completely devoid of setting or context. I think in many ways that reflects the make up of the street fair that this was taken at. What are you going to do with all this stuff after you've bought it?

Unfortunately, I screwed up at the top right, and bottom right of the frame, but I find people don't notice it unless I point it out.

Similar circumstances to the one below one. Took this shot from a number of difference angles, but I think the interest/humor here is in the contrast between the smiling duck decoration, and the cruel mechanical shuttling of the real rubber ducks off into the void.

Image
Spoiler
As it got darker, I left my settings as they were, and went about and started taking pictures of all the rides in the half-light. As it is, it's pretty much a point and shoot. This was on the fourth of July.

The Minnesota State Fair this time. Easy shot, (the angle is pretty obvious, I pulled the same thing last year on a different gondala) but a good mix of colors, and the sky doesn't intrude too much. I screwed up by letting a tree get into the bottom left, and if I could go back to this, I'd get it a little closer and wait until a more dynamic pair of people came through.

Image
Spoiler
I blew this shot last year (see the link at the beginning) but I'm much happier with it this time.

The worker in front of the slide is really the star here. The way she's holding herself is sort of intriguing to me; she's adjusting her hair, and her weight is slightly off center. She seems bored to me, but her short jean shorts and grooming make the pose almost suggestive. I took a bunch of these shots, but after looking at them afterwords, this is the one that holds your attention for much longer than the rest.

Image
Spoiler
The New York Times validated this shot just a few days later with an article about State Fairs in which their photo is similarly biased towards the left side. Of course, their photographer is better than I am, but I like this shot too. The light green accents to some of the struts of the ride are neat, and I like the sense of space that the negative area on the right gives.

That's the main difference, actually, the Times photo uses the negative space to suggest some kind of instability, and action, as if the ride pictured could fly off at any moment. The darker sky in this shot and the relative lack of motion gives a greater sense of isolation and perhaps a hint of ruin.

The picture of sunflowers, as promised. There's more where this one came from, but I like how this one puts the sunflower into the spotlight, as opposed to the phenomenally blue sky at the time, which was wonderful, but not the object. The bee is a bonus, but many people don’t realize that the bee to sunflower ratio in a field is about 2:1, so it’s pretty easy. I had to hold the stem still in strong wind so I could make sure I got nothing more than a quarter of the flower.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

I like all of these, but my favorites are the 3rd and 6th one. I will admit the corners you mentioned in the first photograph really bothered me (before you mentioned it, I wasn't sure what was off and then afterwards it really nagged at me). But don't take that too much to heart, I'm notorious for being a nitpicker.

The 6th one has this kind of ominous feeling to it; like a haunted fairgrounds minus the antiquity. I wouldn't change anything about it. :) It's better than the NYT one, too. xD

Well, This is Rain here, I don't comment photoagraphy much but Im going to give it a shot here...

#1- I like this one, other then the top left and right where you got the sky in the picture, you could just crop that out though... I like the mixture of colors and objects.

#2- This one is good to, but I don't like the part of the duck that is in the top right of the picture... It takes the eye away from what you are wanting then to look at...

#3- This one is cool, I like how it looks like the rollorcoster is not there but there at the same time, like the ducks. Though I think if it was just the rollorcoster and didn't have that other think in the top right it would be better...

#4- This one is my all time favorite out of them all, (other then the tree in the bottom left but that can be edited out as well...) I think that it would also be better if you had the first people that you see when you looked at this waving at you. But I really like the angle and the railroad effect that you captured it this...

#5- I liked this one a lot as well. What I didn't like though are the shadows in the bottom of the poto and the other person in the bottom left. Other then that its great! I like that her shirt says Giant Slide, and that is what it in the background, a giant slide!

#6- This is good, maybe if you would have taken it ten or twenty minetes eariler you would have caught more of its color, here it is kinda washed-out lokking...

#7- This is one of the best picture I've seen of a sunflower, most have a sunflower in the middle or to the side with a big blue sky in the background, this is better, and I love the bee!

Well, that is my attempt and editing photoagraphy... if you liked the review and want me to review any other photos you can request by clicking the link below...

I am very obviously here to review. I hope I don't just repeat information people have already given, but I don't have time to read the previous reviews. I also promise I won't read the descriptions until after I have posted this.

1. You should take out the sky in the top right hand corner and I think something in the bottom left. Besides that though this is great. The only thing I don't like is that it lacks a point to draw your attention. No center, this would have made it more noticeable to publishers, but you can't go back now and I have a feeling that you wanted it to be that way.

2. I love this! I like how you focused on a duck that was tipped over it makes the picture seem like all the happy ducks are going to their doom just around the corner. Or at least that is what I got. I only wish I could see more or less of the rubber ducky at the top of the picture.

3. This is cool. Of course you could make it better though. I think if you cropped out some of the bottom (just enough to make the ride look as if it was coming out of nothing) it would look awesome. I also think if you slightly blurred the ride in the background it keep people focused more on the ride and it would make the picture seem less like a lucky snapshot. Right now it seems kind of like you took the picture and dropped the camera down before it was done. Everything is moved a little bit to the right. Maybe it would help with that.

5. I would crop this photo just enough to get rid of the trees and the red object at the top right corner. It would really help the picture seem more professional. Maybe a bit from each side too, this would stress the fact that the ride gets farther and farther away.

6.

O.K. I cropped out the person that was standing next to her. I couldn't really do much about the shadows on the ground, but I think it looks better now. I know I know it is a bit lopsided, but maybe that just stresses how she is standing lopsided. It actually gives it... style. This is one of my favorite photos of the bunch. (If you took some off the other side too:

7. I don't really think this has publishing quality. It seems kind of like a snap shot. It is missing something. Maybe the sky is to bland. Maybe you should include more at the bottom. It possibly could have been better at a different angle. I am not sure.

8. This is a great photo, but I wish you would have focused more on the bee. Not that you should have taken focus from the rest of the flower, just that the bee wasn't blurry as it is.

If you have any questions p.M. me.

I hope I helped,

A. S.

I hope you don't mind, but instead of going picture by picture, I'm just going to critique similarities and style things. :)

First of all- I think that these were quite good. The resolution of the photo doesn't matter that much (as long as it isn't blurry)- it's the talent of the photographer.

And, like I said, I think these were quite good. I would think about playing the contrast and color a bit, not a whole lot, but it would definitely add some depth to the pictures. Also, there were a couple of photos that were straight-ons, which is a framing that I really like. But you didn't quite get it straight-on, which irked me. It was almost there, but didn't quite hit it from the center. If you're going to almost center a picture, it's almost always better to fully center it.

For the first photo, you can just crop it a tiny bit. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of editing, but little things like that are super easy and add a lot.

Overall, I really liked this- I think that you can play with some settings and change some angles, but otherwise, great job! :)

Hey there, Smorgishborg.

XD Wow. That all looks quite fun, but very, very crazy at the same time. =P I have to say, my favorite pictures are probably the second and the third, because I like the movement that shows in them. =D

Very awesome and fun pictures.
[Griffinkeeper] 10:45 pm: The guard appears "We have weasels now!"
[Firearris] 10:45 pm: askes the guard for the weasel!
[Griffinkeeper] 10:45 pm: The guard gives Firearris the Weasel.
[Firearris] 10:46 pm: aquires the weasel and renames it "Cat"

Take that, Lumi.

Hi there. :)
Your pictures are beautiful, just thought you should know.

1. This is probably my less favorite... It's a little bit too crowded. Something about it bothers me, and I'm not sure I know what it is...

2. Beautiful! Love the composition and the colors. The movement is just great. Well I have nothing more to say about that one. :)

3. The movement is awesome, again. You seemed to have captured it pretty good, and I love the colors. This is the picture I see when I think about the Fair, rides... Aw, memories... :)

4. Love it! Probably my favorite one. I've got nothing to say...

5. the colors on this one are beautiful. The only thing that bothers me is the sides. You want the "track" to be the focus... You might want to crop it, so you get a little bit of it off, so it is more focused.

6. Again, I would recommend to crop this one too, but apart from that, I love it too.

7. I love the light in this one. The colors... Well if you haven't noticed yet, I really like them. :D The bee's a nice accent, even though I didn't really see it before you mentioned it. It's really traditional, but it is pretty.

I didn't really say anything bad, but I hope I helped!

Hello smorgishborg,
I love this collection, it is one of the best photagraphy collections I've seen so far. They were all shot well and maintained a clear focal point. To me, the only one that didn't fit was the last picture of the sunflower. It seemed unbelievanbly random. Also I would consider changing the title. It dousn't seem to fit. There doesn' seem to be a shot to portray your family unless you were using Impressionism in which case makes perfect sense. Also it didn't seem to make sense to me that you pointed out your flaws in the photography. ou wouldn't go to a gallery and find a photographer pointing out the flaws in his/her works. Other than that I think the collection is great. Best wishes.
