Garadeth.

Background:

For 40 years or so, the Kingdom of Garadeth has been ruled with an iron fist. The King, a rarely seen ruler, has a monopoly over the entire kingdom. He has a large, well-trained military group, as well as smaller, better trained professional groups which carry out more of the secret work. He has spies and followers, as well as one deadly weapon: fear.
The citizens in Garadeth live in fear that if they don’t conform, if they rebel against the king, then they will be one of the many who is marched off to the ‘experiment house’ (as it’s known) and be subjected to some of the King’s scientists’ gruesome experiments. The purpose of the Experiment House is to create a new ‘super army’ that the King can use to spread his arm over neighbouring Kingdoms. As far as everyone knows, all of his experiments have failed. And no person has ever come back from the Experiment House.
No-one really knows what happens in the house. All they know is that there are rumours of mutants inhabiting the nearby forest; rumours of disfigured things creeping around in the dark. Nobody goes out after sunset anymore. No-one ever ventures into the woods. Nobody talks about the eerie noises after dark. Nobody really talks about anything.

Your role:

You are one of the unlucky people. One morning, you receive a letter which goes a little something like this:

"To whom it may concern,
Congratulations! You, dear reader, have been chosen specially to help the King. At 11 o’clock tomorrow morning, someone will be at your door to escort you to your destination. Please be prompt and ready on your escort’s arrival. Any absences will be noted.


In short, you have been picked for the King’s experiments. It’s up to you why this is. Perhaps your character has been rumour mongering. Maybe they’re associated with an enemy of the state? Maybe they’re one of the desperately loyal people, and have put their name down for the experiments. Or perhaps they’re one of the really unlucky citizens who have just been picked for the job randomly.

You don’t really have to be a citizen. You could also be a soldier, or perhaps an underground rebel. Eventually, the plan is for the characters to escape the Experiment House and go against the King, so taking soldiers hostage or having help from ‘rebels’ would come in useful later on.

In the Experiment House, people are actually given a type of drug that is supposed to react with and change their genes to create the superhuman that the King wants. However, only a very small percentage of people will actually react in the right way. Usually, they're either completely unchanged (in which case they're usually conscripted to the army), killed ... or turned into mutants. (But remember, your character might not know this yet.)

You will be taken to the Experiment House (if you are a citizen) and you will be experimented on. However, the outcome is mainly down to you. Will your character be driven close to death? (I'm assuming you won't want to kill them off. ) Will nothing happen to them? Will they become a mutant (I'll post more on that later) or will they become the 'superhuman' that the King desperately wishes for? (I will also post more on that later.)

-In addition, be respectful of other characters. I’ve seen a lot of people controlling other peoples’ characters recently, so please refrain from doing that excessively. (As in no making major decisions with a character that isn’t yours.)

Character Profile:

Name: Dylan Hawkins

Age: 23

Gender: Male

Appearance: Tall (around 6ft) and pretty muscular from his soldier life. Brown hair which, despite being cut quite short, tends to get unruly quickly. He generally looks serious, although not sad, which gives him a distant air that (some) women have found attractive. He has blue-grey eyes and his skin is pale verging on tan.

Personality: Pretty steely, having been in the army. He is kind by nature, but is usually too focused or distant for people to see it. He is logical, but this logic is somewhat blinded due to his upbringing. Other than that, he's rather normal.

Role: Citizen.

Stance on the King: He was a soldier, and his entire family has bought him up to be devoted to the King, so he's definitely on his side.

Why picked for experiment: He signed up for it.

History: Dylan was bought up with 3 older brothers, all whom joined his father in the army at the first chance they could. He, too, joined the army a few years ago. He was good in it, although he didn't excel as his brothers have done. Recently in Garadeth there have been relatively few people signing up for the experiments, so Dylan was encouraged to and did.

Other: Well, it'll be interesting to see what happens when he is experimented on.
He's up for romance, although the person will most likely have to bring him down to earth on the King front. I'm sure that friendship/romance with someone who is against the King would be interesting.

History:
She was kept away from her father most of her life, but lived a wealthy lifestyle.
Most of her life she spent doing lady-like things. But behind her fathers back she took archery, Latin and was trained to be an assasin. She can speak French, English, Italian, German, Latin and Spanish. She joined the group against the king when she was 15 and was quickly promoted to leader after showing clear strength and intelegance.

Other: Up for love. She is so beautiful that she is called the White Rose of Garadeth.

After she is changed she looks the same, but can feel others emotions, and control pain. Controlling pain can go two ways, making it worse or lessening it.

Personality: Acts tough. Stands for what he believes in, and will stand up to anyone who gets in his way. Isn't afraid to fight and or kill. Will protect anyone who is on his side and who he can trust.

Stance on the king: Thinks hes awful but has to be in the army to support his family.

Why picked for experiment: He got into trouble with an officer

History: Brought up in a troubled home, his father left them with nothing when Sage was only 10 and his younger sister, Leeta was 2. He joined the army as soon as he was old enough to help his family pay for food and other essentials and quickly rose through ranks, being very obidient. But one day an officer challenged him and insulted him and got him and Sage into a fight.

Other: Up for love and friendship.

Gender: Male

Appearance: Slightly over the average height, has a shock of flame-colored hair that sticks up in some places. His eyes are brown, but will change after his mutation. He's well-built and has the annoying tendency to smile a lot.

Personality: A little arrogant. He's charming and sweet, but he has a short temper and doesn't really think things through.

Role: Wanderer. Doesn't stay in one place long, and is only passing through.

Stance on the King: Doesn't know, and doesn't care.

Why picked for experiment: Ashton has a lot of potential. He's been almost everywhere, and has seen a lot of things.

History: Has been wandering since the age of 13. He ran away from his home when he found out that his parents were going to make him marry a girl in two more years, and wouldn't hear anything of it. Got his money from stealing mostly, but now that he's older he started on the more honest trade of selling trinkets that he makes from things that he finds on the road.

Other: Up for love. When he's mutated he'll be able to manipulate and conjure fire. Also, he'll be impervious to it.

Appearance (After Mutation):

Personality: Valentina is a sweet young woman with a gentle sense of humour and high intelligence. She is generally quiet and usually seems sad but interjects where she feels is best. Though, she has trouble speaking her opinion in things but she's quick at making decisions (which is a good and bad thing) and will defend herself.

Role: Independent citizen

Stance on the King: She has a distaste for him, but couldn't care less.

Why picked for experiment: She questioned the King's authority out loud after one of the King's men began to pester and insult her.

History: Valentina's parents were immigrants from another country, hoping to find a nice place to live freely. They found themselves stuck in Garadeth, and died from old age only a few years before this. Valentina quickly took up her father's grocery store thereafter.

Other: Up for love.

Mutation: She when she becomes a mutant, she will sprout white wings (considered an anomaly)as well as be drained of much of any colour (her hair turns translucent white, and her skin becomes very pale). She also develops incredible strength. Her powers are defective, so at random times she will go blind and/or faint, her anger also is effected. She will go from calm to rage in an instant if provoked and then she doesn't have much control over what she does.

I call a spot, but also need to ask a question. Is this the first group to be actually "invited" to it? Sort of effects the character I have in mind.

26. I don't know why, 26 just seems to be a good age.

Appearance:
Petite, with shoulder-length brown hair and hazel eyes. Looks a lot younger than she is - people often think she's still in school.

Personaliy:
Bubbly and cheerful, with an epic sense of humour. She has of course got some serious streaks, but she buries them down, hiding it under jokes etc.

Role:
A nurse working with the military to take care of wounded soldiers.

Stance on the King:
She hates him, but she doesn't let on, generally, because of the soldiers she works with.

Why picked for experiment:
She spoke out about the mistreatment of civilians under the law.

History:
Her family were all killed in an attack led by the King's soldiers who were looking for a spy, who it was believed they were harbouring.

Other:
Looking for romance, but will find it difficult to handle the seriousness of a relationship. She doesn't have any real close friends, and is hoping to at least gain that in the Experiment House.

When she's mutated, she will be able to change her physical features to suit the situation she's put in - like a watered-down version of morphing into other animals. That might develop later on.

Ok, so I've put up a character list on the main post. I'll probably start this on Monday, because I won't be able to post at all during the weekend.

At the moment, the girl:boy ratio is unbalanced. I'll see what happens when the time comes, but if needs be I'll change my character. But hopefully some other people will join with male characters.

Also, after the Experiment it seems that everyone is going to get powers. I might join you with that, but also remember that your character can be mutated as well. Rae is going to be mutated because otherwise she'll be an unbearable character.

I'll probably create a DT for this, but until then does anyone have any thoughts about what could happen in this?

Oh, and I forgot to mention this, but the setting is sort of based on that of my NaNo novel! I was going to edit it, but that looked like a mammoth task, so instead it's a storybook (although I might make it a novel later). Rae is the name of one of the two MCs in my book, but she has a completely different life/personality than the one I wrote in. The reason that editing was going to be such a big task was because I wanted to rewrite the ENTIRE 50,000 words with my new Rae as the character. So, yeah ... that'll take a while. But I really wanted to see what this would be like as a storybook.

He has Black hair cut very short, naturally brown but dyed recently, it is somehow always messy at its length as well. Wears glasses, fake though, and has bright blue eyes. Works out everyday and is in good shape. (Looking for picture)

Personality:
He is a mix of serious and light that makes him able to do things right while making it enjoyable for anyone. He keeps to himself, but asks a lot about others, wanting to be as informed as he ca be while in the shadows. Some people find it annoying and off putting, and try to find more about him, but a lot of people don't even notice until pointed out.

Role:
High rank in a main rebel organization, with many connections with other smaller ones. He is also a well known name, no of his will.

Stance on the King:
He hates him, and has actually attempted to kill him several times, as a rebel leader its pretty obvious.

Why picked for experiment:
He signed up under a fake name when one of his members was taken in to it, he hopes to find out some information while there

History:
His family has worked as the royal families servants for many years, when he was 12 the king was under the impression that his family was going to poison him, so he ordered them to be killed. A rebel group found out and tried to save them, ad only he was able to get away.

Other: Up for love I guess

When he mutates he will be able to slip into the shadows, not literally, but when needed he will be able to hide, each time different and situational.

Let's ignore the fact that it's sideways.



Personality: Probably one of the most stubborn people you will ever meet. She sticks to her ground and can have a bit of a big head sometimes. She's not very fond of shy people, they annoy her. She's one not to hold back her tounge, and she speaks her mind. Sometimes for the good, sometimes for the bad. She seems pretty rough on the outside, but she does have a soft spot, you just have to find it. She doesn't love.



Role: Rebel. Formed by her and another rebel. The group was formed when Eve's family was killed by the king with no mercy. He even killed off her, at that time, six year old brother. Now she seeks revenge, and will do anything to get it.



Stance on the King: Hates his guts work?



Why picked for experiment: She signed up for it to see if there is anyway to get more information on this army the king is forming. After all, she is out to get him.



History: Like I said, her family was killed by the king when she was about ten. She was raised by a family who escaped him who saved her. For about a week she was in a coma, and then finally came out of it to discover her entire family was killed. Her new 'family' raised her. One day when she was out in the woods she came back to find that family killed off to. Her childhood friend, Mark, whose family was also killed, decided to form a group to try and ruin the king and eventually kill him. It's a small group, not many people, yet growing. She's the only one right now who's living under the king's colony (or whatever you'd like to call it).


Other: As I mentioned somewhere up above, she's not one too love. Her families killing have made her a very strong person. You'd have to dig deep in order to actually find some sense of softness. If you're up for it, go ahead.

It's nice that we have some people who're ambivalent about the King. The storybook is a little heavy on people who're against him, so if anyone joins it after this point, I would encourage them to go the opposite way.
