What about abilities like soul-stealing? Is that too powerful or okay?

A bit OP... Maybe a catch to it, like using a certain weapon to stab someone twice in the same spot causes them to lose their soul. Just something to weaken it a bit.
Alright, will do. Also, can her familiar be what she channels her magic through?

So if the characters can be as powerful as we want, how do we stop them from being able to solve every problem and get past every obstacle too easily? It'll get boring if there's no challenge.

No, powerful, not over powered. Don't forget, these are the strongest Magicians and Nulls in Vyheria, and while it is volunteer based, any old person would be dead after one battle. So, some power is to be expected, but something like the ability to kill with eye contact is ridiculous. In other words, power within limits.
A quick question about the time period: does it have modern tech bc it is in the modern world or medieval tech bc it is an isolated island?

For those wanting to soul-suck and one-hit-kill and such-and-so-forth, this article is a good read for the evolution of storybooking.
To put it in simple terms, if Laurel is capable of controlling a volume of water the length of her arm by dancing through the motions the water follows, your dark magician should not be able to reap the souls of an enemy through willpower and maniacal laughter. ;P
It's about balance! And obstacles! I'd fathom to say that since Dark Magic is a rare form, it's also remarkably difficult to master, so those with the inclination would be...less adept at handling the power.

Good idea! I didn't think of not being able to control it very well. I'll throw that into my unfinished CP. About the soul-stealing, it isn't necessarily overpowered so long as it is used/played right. If you are in a high-level party fighting powerful monsters with immunities and such it can work, which was why I was asking.

We could also make @featherstone9086 's character well known... Her character's specific ability would be rendered a lot less useful once people know what it can do.
True, true. I made it so it has a really high cost (so maybe once or twice a day max) and she has to use her bone knife and stab the heart of her target to lower it's power level a bit.
