Welcome everyone to the Ancient Sands OOC!
Below are a couple more general notes on worldbuilding, the character form, and the collab pad! Feel free to ask me if you have any questions!
Collab Pad!
Technology:
Spoiler
Technology is rather rudimentary and near the level of medieval weaponry made with what they can find and salvage. Likely if you think medieval level technology anything from there works here as well. Carts, sleds, swords, bows, ect. Armor is not often worn unless it is made of hide because with the heat of the desert, any metal armor would likely cook a person, quite literally. Beasts of burden are sometimes utilized but it ischard to keep these animals for oneself due to the scarcity of food.
Flora and Fauna:
Spoiler
Animals are not quite what they used to be here in the desert. Often, creatures that once existed no longer do or adapted to live in the desert. For example, a variation of cattle and and buffalo evolved known as the sand ox. these shaggy beasts are what the people mainly use to fur to create clothing and other manners of fibers. They also produce thick hides that can be used for armor or settlement walls to block out the abraisive sandy wind. In addition to these animals, there are also things like foxes, lizards, large emu like birds, antelope, and big cats, all of which have have adapted in some way or another to the desert environment. Feel free to mention other species of animals however, just keep in mind common desert adaptations:
Physical adaptations:
Thick fur: Insulates animals from the heat
Large ears: Help animals cool down by pumping blood into their ears
Light-colored coats: Help animals reflect heat
Humps: Store fat reserves
Slit-like nostrils: Help keep out sand
Long eyelashes: Help keep out sand
Large, flat feet: Spread weight on sand
Salt Glands: Helps get rid of excess salt
Behavioral adaptations:
Nocturnality: Being active at night when it's cooler
Burrows: Digging underground to escape predators and harsh weather
Dormancy: Going into a state of suspended animation during the hottest parts of the day
Mud: Sprinkling themselves with mud to cool down and block the sun
Conserving water: Having a higher tolerance for salt
Plants are also adapted to the desert and very hard to find. Most are in the form of cacti, dry grasses and bushes, or succulents, things that don't need much water to survive and that can grow in the sandy soil. Feel free to get creative with these as you see fit, just keep in mind desert adaptations so there will likely be no leafy fern like plants anywhere in the environment.
