“That’s a good idea.” Rana smiled, switching back to Upper. She was annoyed by how endearing she found this man. “We can both practice that way.”

"Thank you!" He grinned back, still speaking Eastern. "May I ask who tutored you?"
"The artist deals with what cannot be said in words. The artist whose medium is fiction does this in words. The novelist says in words what cannot be said in words." --Ursula K. Le Guin
“We occasionally sponsor foreign exchange students,” Rana answered. “My Father gives them a living stipend as they attend University and in return they tutor Lia and I in their native tongue.”
(Is that okay? Literally making it up on the fly haha)

(Yep that works! This world is technically no longer canon so by all means make things up as you go. I'll let you know if there's a discrepancy)
"Ah, of course. That's a really good way to get experience with a language, actually."

“It is,” Rana agreed with a nod. “Works out in everyone’s favor, really. Plus gets people relatively close to my age so they’re not stuffy and mean like some of my other tutors.”

"That is good." He chuckled. "Though I've found tutors closer in age to be a bit...insecure about themselves and more likely to snap at me."

“That’s fair,” Rana said, dipping her head. “I suppose mine were a bit more motivated to be patient, as my education was directly tied to funding their own.”

"That's a very fair point." He nodded. "Hopefully they did well at the university!" They had reached the door to the archives. Ewan pushed the door open. The space was cramped but had a high ceiling and several ladders to reach anything shelved too high up. There were no windows and it smelled as if no one had entered in decades, but two desks and a couple chairs were off in one corner. A solitary lantern sat on one of the tables, unlit.

Rana squinted, looking around in silence. She wasn’t sure what to say.

Ewan glanced at her. Did she not like it? Was it too small or too dusty or both? "It's not much," he admitted sheepishly.

“No, no, not at all,” Rana said quickly, glancing at him. “It’s nice. I’m just trying to make sense of everything. I can’t quite skim the titles as quickly as I could back home.”

"Ah, of course." He nodded in understanding. "If you need help with any of them I could translate as best I can."

"Thank you." Rana shuffled forward a little. "How are things organized in here?"

"Records are organized chronologically on that wall there." He pointed. "And there are history books and the like on the other wall. Poetry and anthologies right ahead of you, and a mish mash of other things organized alphabetically by title off to the side."

"Ooh, nice." Rana didn't even realize that her legs started carrying her straight towards the poetry almost immediately.
