Dima stared at the blank white sky. At least, she thought it was the sky. It was impossible to tell without shadows and horizons. It didn't matter. It was up, she was down. That was the sky. She was lying on the floor.

Zeda was muttering to himself again, his eyes closed and his arms spread out. His fingers glowed slightly. It took all of his concentration to restructure the box, to make sure it wouldn't collapse on them and kill them too. Though, every nondescript hour made Dima question the point of delaying death. What was there to live for? Their home was gone. Their friend was gone. Everything... the ocean, the dirt, every plant, animal, and in between, gone. Only Zeda and Dima remained, living the same day over and over again with no way to tell how many times they had lived it.

Zeda stopped muttering, falling completely silent. He doesn't talk much anymore. Not when his thoughts consume him as soon as his attention isn't eaten by the box. Dima tried to sit in his mind, sweeping away the bitter thoughts by his side, but he pushed her away. And while it broke Dima's heart to no end, she wouldn't lose Zeda. Not like this. Not here.

A shape emerged, far far up above in the sky. It was too far away to make out much more than vague blob that might have been blue but it could've been any color.

Dima watched it with mild interest. There was never any color in the background. That's not how it worked. Zeda.

He hummed in response, obviously not really caring.

Look. Can you see that color in the sky?

He lifted his head, following my gaze until he was looking right at the colors. He let out a short laugh. "Oh. Incredible. We've offically lost our minds." He fell back. "And we lasted a month!"

The shape seemed to be moving, slowly but surely although it was too far away to judge which direction, not that it was possible to judge direction in a featureless blank void anyway.

Dima just watched it. She didn't feel like arguing with Zeda. She just hoped, within her own soul, that he was wrong.

It started to get larger and larger, until it was now clearly flying towards them. The blob was still a bit too far away to make out any details however, besides confirming that it was in fact blue and a fairly light shade of blue at that.

Zeda went back to muttering. That was strange it felt way too early to reinforce the box.

The shape was now starting to get clearer. It was long, very long, and particularly wide except for the very center of it. The sides of it seemed to shift every so often, moving up and down independently of the other.

Dima hugged her knees. Something about it put her on edge, like this was the comeuppance for the destruction they've caused.

As the shape got ever closer, it was starting to make a little more sense now. The long, moving parts were two massive wings, connected to what appeared to be a woman in her late twenties.

Dima swallowed. So she had been right. This was the Above-God, the one that had created the gods and would punish them for their sins.

The shape, or rather the woman was now almost right over their heads, the glow now visibly emenating from long thing veins that ran all over her exposed arms and legs, all of them running towards her eyes which seemed to be the epicenter of the glow.

Dima couldn't help but stare. She had never seen anyone that looked like that before, and she had known Raz for thousands of years. She kept her face blank, her eyes slightly wide.

She landed with a soft thud, wings folding up behind her. They ended up sticking a few feet above her head, making them almost look like some sort of crown. The glow in her eyes dimmed ever so slightly.

Dima scooted a little further away from her. Her presence licked against the woman's mind and she could feel just how powerful she was.

The woman broke out into a smile, the lines of her face immediately changing into something else, something a lot softer. The glow in her eyes shifted towards a more pinkish hue.

"Hello there."

Dima just stared. She couldn't speak. She didn't want her power anywhere near this woman's mind. So, she settled with letting her eyes glow too, shifting them to their usual black shine.

The woman raised her hands in the air. "I come in peace."

Dima didn't say anything.

The woman bent down ever so slightly. "I only came here to ensure you two are okay and to escort you to some place safer than this highly unstable remnant here."

Dima drew closer to Zeda, her eyes never straying from this womn.

The woman went silent after her declaration, as if she was waiting for a response.

Dima glanced at Zeda. He was completely nonresponsie. She glanced back up at the woman and gave her a small wave.

The woman's smile widened a little. "Hello." She held out a hand, showing that the glowing veins also seemed to congregate right at the center of her palm. "I'm Katherine, but you can call me Kate."

Dima leaned away from her hand. Too many gods' powers sparked from their palms. She didn't trust this woman enough to touch such an epicenter of power.

Kate didn't pull her hand away. "Care to introduce yourselves?" Her smile was a little dimmer now.

Dima pointed to her lips and shock her head slowly. She couldn't introduce herself to Kate because she was staying away from Kate's mind.

Kate nodded, her smile softening a little more. Her hands whirled around in quick flowing motions that she couldn't really make out.

Dima furrowed her eyebrows and shook her head again.

Kate nodded. "That's okay. You can at least understand me right?"

Dima nodded. She could hear. She just couldn't speak.

Kate's smile widened again. "Brilliant. That's something. So since it appears I won't be treated to any introductions, let me skip that part." Kate cleared her throat. "Are you two okay? Any immediate concerns?"

Dima gestured to the white void they found themselves in. What could be a bigger concern than that? And then they gestured to Zeda, who was refusing to look at this Kate.

He spoke up then, finally. "Stop interacting with it, Dima. It's not real."

"Well, I meant besides the obvious issue. I am here to take you two someplace safe. Is there anything to address is what I'm asking?" Kate's smile didn't waver.

Dima pointed to Zeda again.

Kate nodded and focused her attention solely on Zeda. "Hello. I assure you I'm quite real."

Zeda turned to scowl at her. "And why should I believe that? We've been a white box by ourselves for a month and suddenly you just pop into existence?" He snorted. "Not a chance."

Kate sniffed the air for a moment. "Not a month, but close. And I get your point. Well all I can do is ask what you need as proof. Not really much else I can do here."

Zeda sighed. "Well, forgive me for not being to keep track of time in the void."

Kate raised her hands. "Sorry. Didn't realize you were sensitive. Look. I'm just here to get you out of here and someplace safe. I just want to make sure there's no unforeseen injuries or anything before I do that. Some names would also make the process a bit easier."

He groaned and curled into himself. Dima knew he was injured. He was doing it to himself, when he thought Dima wouldn't notice. "Kate, you said your name was? Well, you're looking at the reason this is all that's left. So please, there's no safety. I tore apart the very underworld."

Dima tensed. She hated when Zeda said I instead of we, even though he was techincally telling the truth.

Kate took a step closer to them. "There's plenty of safety where we're gong. I promise you that."

"Where else is there?" He curled even tigher into himself.

Kate's smile dimmed a little. "Nothing ever really feels quite the same as a home does, but I assure you there's a lot more out there than you'd think."

Dima perked up at that. Do you think she means other worlds, Zeda?

Zeda growled. "She doesn't mean anything because she's not real."

"I assure you, I'm quite real. Once again, all you need to do is ask if you need me to do something to prove it."

"If you were real, you'd be attacking us." Zeda gave her a deadpan look.

Kate gave him a confused look. "Why ever would I do that?"

Zeda gestured to the white box.

"I don't see how that explains anything. Could you be a little more specific?"

Zeda blinked. "I killed everything in this universe with my bare hands. My death toll is in the hundred of trillions at least."

"That's stll hardly a reason to be attacking you even if this was a malicious act, which quite frankly any idiot could see it wasn't."

Zeda scoffed. "How do you know that?"

Kate smiled again at that, although it looked a little strained. "Let's call it experience."

Zeda groaned. "You're quite the stubborn hallucination."

Dima frowned. I think she's real, Zeda.

Zeda glared at Dima, like she had just deeply betrayed him. "Don't say that. Don't you dare say that."

Kate sighed. "Can you think of anything else that would make you believe?"

Zeda didn't respond. Dima sighed and slowly drew herself to her feet. She went to stand beside Kate. She was shorter than Kate, which made sense. She stopped aging before she had finished growing.

Kate looked down at Dima, with a small smile. "Are you ready to go to safety then?"

Dima took a deep breath and gently poked Kate's side. It was fleshy, real. She poked her again, eyes widening.

Kate offered DIma a hand. "I assure you I'm very real."

Dima glanced at Zeda. No hallucinations have flesh.

Zeda sat up then, staring at Dima. "What?"

Dima gestured for him to stand. Touch her.

Zeda drew to his feet. "I'm not touching her. We... we saw how that ended last time."

"I can assure you, nothing bad's going to happen from touching me. Here, if this helps." Kate let out a little huff and the glow across her body completely died off, leaving just her eyes with a glow.

Zeda frowned. "You turning off your nightlight skin doesn't change anything."

Kate raised her hands again. "Look I assure you, it won't hurt you."

"I'm not worried about me." Zeda glared at her.

"Well I wouldn't worry about me." Kate chuckled.

"I'm a killer, Miss. Kate." Zeda crossed his arms.

"I fail to see how that's relevant." Kate looked confused again.

"Touching people is how I kill them."

Dima shook her head. No. That isn't what happened. That's what Zeda thinks, but it isn't true.

"We will need to adress that eventually, but that shouldn't be an issue as far as touching me is concerned."

Zeda crossed his arms. He didn't believe her. Dima looked between him and Kate helplessly.

Kate sighed again. "How about we put it this way? You don't think I'm real anyway. What's the harm? Maybe this hallucination will finally leave you alone?"

Zeda scoffed. "Dima thinks you're real."

"Well if you believe her, then we can simply be on our way."

Zeda sighed. "Wherever she goes, I follow."

Dima smiled softly. Trust me, Zeda.

Zeda sighed. "I'll follow you. Trust has very little to do with it."

"Then I suppose the question is if you, Dima, from what he says, will take me up on my offer of going to a safer place?" Kate turned back to Dima.

Dima hesitated but nodded.

Kate nodded. "Alright. Lovely." Kate glanced around at the space they were standing in.
"Okay. I think the simplest solution is to fly a little ways out and take the transport. Would either of you be able to fly?"

Dima shook her head. Zeda sighed. "Unfortunately, no. The best we have is teleportation. But that requires us to know where we're going."

Kate nodded. "Happens. Alright well then we have no choice, you will have to hold my hands, at least for a little bit."

Zeda took a step back, holding his hands like he had been burnt.

"Sorry. There's not really a better way to fly out of here."

Zeda shook his head. "No. You don't know what I'm capable of."

"I really don't, but that's still really no reason to be afraid."

"I am not afraid!" Zeda growled, now pacing back and forth. "I am not afraid."

Kate let out another sigh, holding a hand out to Dima. "You don't have any such reservations, do you?"

Dima shook her head and took her hand. Her power was in her voice. She just didn't speak. Zeda had learned to be afraid of touch, and Dima was afraid of her voice.

Kate's grip was light but firm. Kate held a hand out to Zeda. "See, nothing will happen. Just take my hand."

"Dima's power is in her voice. That's why she doesn't speak." Zeda shook his head. "She's doing the exact same thing as me."

Kate shrugged. "Well we'll have to work on that too. But not right now." Kate carefully let go of Dima's hand. "One second, darling."

She turned to face Zeda properly, holding out both hands now. "Well if you're afraid of accidentally hurting her, that's not an issue anymore. Just grab hold."

Zeda shook his head. "No."

Kate let out another sigh. "If you insit." She reached out to pat him on the shoulder.

As soon as her hand made contact, it happened again. Zeda burst with power, letting out a sharp cry of pain as Kate was launched into the air.

Zeda crumpled to his knees, his skin crackling with energy. He was weaker to the surges now. The first time it happened, he had barely flinched. But he hadn't eaten since the void was created. Dima hadn't either, but her powers were much easier to control.

Kate was immediately on the ground and on her knees beside Zeda in the blink of an eye. "Oh sweetie. I'm so sorry. Are you hurt? I really don't why it did that. Nothing should've been able to hurt you unless you somehow reflected it back onto you."

"I'm-" Another shock ran through him and he gasped. "I'm unstable. Have been since..." He shook his head. "It's my fault."

Kate's hand was on his shoulder again. This time the veins in her arms flickered to life, glowing a brilliant darker teal, significantly brighter than they'd been earlier. It spread back all the way to her eyes, but she didn't go flying.

"That's alright. We'll find a way to make sure you don't get hurt again, until then as soon as we're done flying, I'll try and make sure you don't have to touch anyone."

Zeda gritted his teeth. "How... how did it not hurt you?"

Kate chuckled. "Let's chalk that up to life experience too."

Zeda doubled over as another violent surge shot through him. He groaned.

Kate patted his back. "Come on sweetie, let's get you out of here and find a way to deal with this okay. Doing this isn't going to help much, and at the very least we can immediately start with some food and sleep on the way there. It will help."

Zeda looked up at Kate. "You can't help me."

Kate smiled softly. "Perhaps not. But I'd like to try. You'll never know anything for certain lest you try it first."

Zeda paused before he nodded. "Okay." He winced. "Okay."

Kate got to her feet, holding out a hand. "Come on then."

Zeda tensed and took her hand, using it to slowly stand up.

Kate smiled proudly. "Wonderful. Now Dima, if you could do the same, let's be on our way. It might feel a little tingly now, but nothing that will cause actual pain."

Dima stepped forward and took her hand. She turned her head away to smile for a second. Kate had managed to reassure Zeda. That was good. She forced her face to fall back to neutrality and straightened her head.

"Perfect. Let's get going then. Be ready to collapse this struture once we're clear."

"That'll be my job. I... I created it." He frowned. "Delayed the inevitable." He glanced up at Kate. "Well, what I thought was inevitable."

Kate smiled, that hint of sadness returning. "Well you've done well to hold on thus far."

Zeda nodded. "I guess."

"It is a rather taxing process."

Zeda shrugged. "I... I couldn't kill Dima too. If it was just me, I wouldn't have tried. But Dima..." He shook his head. "I couldn't."

"That's admirable sweetie." Kate's wings unfurled again, stretching out far and wide around them. "Shall we leave then?"

The twins both nodded. Kate smiled at both of them in turn before she carefully lifted both of them into the air. "Both of you alright?"

Dima didn't react, but Zeda insticvely gripped Kate tighter. "We're fine. Right, Dima?" Dima nodded.

Kate smiled, tightening her grip on both of them. "Here we go then." She took off at a short run, flapping her wings twice to get them off the ground. "You can collapse it now."

Zeda closed his eyes and let it fall. The sudden lack of the universe was like taking off a heavy backpack full of rocks. He didn't realize how much energy it was taking until it was over. His head lulled slightly.

Kate pulled them both closer to her as she continued to fly, moving faster and faster.

Dima didn't know what to do with herself. She was so close to Kate, it was making it hard to focus on anything else. It reminded her of before the war, which was a time she didn't like thinking about. She kept all thoughts away from the days before her godhood.

Zeda, meanwhile, felt another shockwave go through him at the closeness. He tried to hold himself together, but it only made it hurt more.

"Just a little longer," Kate whisphered. "I'm sorry if this is uncomfortable. If there was another choice, we'd be taking it."

"It's fine." Zeda's voice was tense, jagged.

"Sorry again darling." Kate let out a sigh.

"It's what I deserve."

"It most certainly is not."

Zeda huffed. "It certainly is."

"What you both deserve is some warm food, maybe a hug and lots of sleep."

Zeda sighed. "We can't die. We'll be fine."

"Death is the relief that comes when you're stuck without such basic necessities. Being unable to die and suffering through that is honestly in my opinion far worse."

Zeda shrugged. "Not when it's a punishment well served."

"It isn't. Trust me on that."

Zeda didn't say anything more.

They continued to fly in silence for a little more until Kate started to slow down and fly downward again.

Dima tried to see where they were landing, get an idea of what to expect. There wasn't a lot to see, just a small shape floating in empty space. She sighed and just waited for Kate to land.

It didn't take too much longer for a short car like shape to emerge out of the gloom. As we got close Kate shouted a command word and a small landing pad potruding from the side of it.

Zeda hummed. "A mage?"

"Sorry?"

"You're a mage, aren't you?"

"I wouldn't say that."

Zeda frowned. "Then what are you?"

"That's a question with a lot of answers, many of them rather subjective."

Zeda sighed. "Just give us one."

Kate sighed almost in unison. "Let's just say a helping hand."

Zeda frowned. "You... you remind me of someone from our... world."

"Woudn't be the first time I've heard that."

He sighed. "I guess not."

Kate finally brought them into land on the tiny platform, letting go of the two of them. "Careful there. I'll just open this and you can take a seat, and we'll be right on our way. I've got some food in here, don't worry. And you get some rest once we reach our destination."

The twins nodded in unison.

Kate barked another word at the vehicle and the door slid off to the side.

A smooth female voice made its presence known from the inside of the vehicle. "Welcome back, Captain Hardy."

Kate smiled. "Hey Tachy. We've got two passangers who will need some food. Oh and set course for home, will ya?"

"The Mountains?"

"Correct."

"Right away, Captain Hardy."

Kate turned back to the twins. "All aboard then. Make yourselves comfortable. The seats will strap you in automatically, that's meant to happen, don't be alarmed."

Dima slips into the car first and Zeda slips in close behind. Dima doesn't react when the straps come down, but Zeda tenses.

"Hold on you two." Kate barked another command word, the door closing behind them as she slipped into the seat at the front.

xxxXXXxxx

The car started to slow down. They'd entered the atmosphere of a planet a few seconds ago, a large blue and yellow sphere that was littered with glowing rings that Kate flew through with practiced ease.

As the car dropped below a layer of small yellowish clouds, a house came into view below. Set on top of a mountain, it seemed to cover the entire mountain range. Somehow lke everything else about Kate, it also shone blue against a backdrop of yellowish white snow, or perhaps everything just was blue here, because the very light seemed to have a blueish tint to it.

As they came into a landing, the house became clearer and clearer, a massive entrance coming into view in front of them as the car started to fly more forwards than down. The massive doors seemed to open all on their own as the car finally hit solid ground on a smooth grey pathway. Kate flicked a control somewhere and suddenly they were tearing down the path and into an underground room of some sort. They went down a winding road, passing by several other vehicles, each one crazier than the last until they seemed to reach the very end of the road and Kate swung the car to a stop.

"Destination reached, Captain Hardy."

"Thank you Tachy. I'll see you later."

Kate was barking a command word again and the doors opened, almost at the same time as the straps on the seats released.

"We're here. I trust the food was adequate."

The twins nodded in unison. "We're soliders. We know not to complain. It would take less to be just adequate."

Kate nodded. "Very well. Come on then. I'll show you a place you can rest and then we'll talk again. I do have a little bit of work to take care of myself."

They both step out of the car, staying close to each other.

"Alright then, just follow me. Its a bit empty and a little chilly cause I haven't been here in some time, but it should still be perfectly liveable."

Dima and Zeda both frowned. They didn't do well in the cold. Sparta's winters were never particularly cold, just wet.

"Is that an issue?" asked Kate, turning around at their frowns.

Zeda and Dima exchanged a glance before turning back to Kate. "No. No issues."

Dima shook her head. We're not going to cause any trouble.

Zeda didn't look at Dima. Already ahead of you.

"Alright. Just let me know if you're uncomfortable, okay? Won't be a problem in the slightest." Kate started to walk towards a door set into a nearby wall. "Follow me."

The twins followed her. Dima glanced at Zeda. Do we believe her no problem comment?

Zeda shook his head. She's just saying that. Everyone says that. It doesn't mean they mean it.

Kate led them through a few flights of stairs up until they were at another door. Kate tapped a few numbers on a keypad there.

"Room, Your Highness?"

"Guest room four." Kate looked a little flustered for some reason, but it was gone as soon as it came.

"You're royalty." Zeda drew even closer to Dima. It wasn't their first time meeting royalty. King Aeolus and Eldoris were pretty sociable. Then there was the matter of Prince Cos, but that was a person they both did not want to think of. Because they were dating the one person they definitely did not want to think of, and that was dangerous territory.

"Technically speaking," said Kate, as the door opened, walking through almost immediately into a short carpeted hallway. The twins kept pace, feeling a bit like they were being escorted to a dungeon of some sort. They locked eyes. They both knew the other was thinking of Athens.

Kate led them through the only other door into a large bedroom. In a surprising twist, this room wasn't blue, simply painted white. "Here we are."

Zeda and Dima looked around. "Thank you, Miss. Kate."

Kate shook her head. "Please, it's just Kate. You two make yourselves comfortable. And let me know if you need anything, just press the number one on that pad there." She pointed to one set into the wall right next to the bed.

The twins nodded in unison again. "Okay. Thank you."

They both knew they were never going to use that button.

"You're Welcome darlings." Kate made for the door they'd come in through. She turned around at the door. "Oh, some fresh clothes should arrive in half an hour or so, just open the door when you hear a ringing sound. If I'm not back in the next four or five hours, some food will arrive the same way else I'll come and get you that myself. Anything else you want clarified besides that?"

Dima would like to know what all of the petnames were for as she turned slightly pink, but she would never ask that. Zeda looked away from Kate. "No. That suffices."

Kate flashed them both a smile. "Alright then. Good Night." She was out the door a second later, it closing behind her with a soft thud.

Zeda and Dima deflated a bit, Zeda shaking his head. "This... this is..." He sat on the carpet, not touching the bed. He didn't want to sleep in a stranger's bed. "I don't know."

Dima sat beside him, nodding. I don't either. But we're together, just like we've always been. One force. No one can change that.

He nodded. "One spear. One soldier."

Dima smiled at him. Zeda had always been immune to her smile. Maybe it was because he had seen it so often before it meant anything. Zeda nodded. "Thank you."

You're welcome.

Kate cautiously opened the door to the room of her new guests. She didn't quite know what to expect, but she really hoped they were comfortable. All she'd wanted to earlier was smother them in hugs but they definitely hadn't looked remotely ready to trust her with so much as a paperclip much less a hug.

As Kate looked in the room, she spotted the two guests. They were curled up together on the floor, both of them obviously asleep. they clutched on to each other like they were terrified of being separated.

Kate's heart broke a little at the sight. They hadn't accepted the clothes she'd sent them and they also didn't seem to be big fans of the bed. The poor things clearly weren't comfortable even though they'd said otherwise. She smiled a little. At least they seemed to have each other. Resisting the urge to go anywhere near them, disturbing this precious moment was nothing short of a crime, Kate carefully set the food she'd brought onto a nearby table.

She scribbled a quick note instructing them to eat this in here if they didn't want to come out or to join her in the dining room if they were feeling up to that. They probably wouldn't want to be in another white box for too long. Leaving that she left as silently as she came circling around to the dining room and taking a seat. She spent a moment setting the table to the right number of seats.

She debated between a chair on either side and a chair on two side. Even as her internal need for symmetry screamed and threw things she put two chairs on the same side. They didn't seem like they'd do well seperated.

Once that was done she set up a bit more of the food herself and settled in for a wait, doing her best to look through the latest alerts on her communicator but being far too distraced with glancing at the door every five seconds.

For about fifteen minutes she sat there, but no one appeared in the doorway. She let out a small sigh as the fiteenth minute ticked by. It was wishful thinking, to think they'd trust her enough to come to a dining room. She should've waited and tried to escort them here at least.

Setting aside the messages that she definitely weren't really registering Kate focused solly on the door, promising herself she'd give up after half an hour had passed even though she knew she couldn't keep that promise.

When Kate was quickly approaching the twenty minute mark, she heard what could possibly a small bare footstep and a whisper.

Kate perked up at the sound, her traitorous heart daring to hope. Soon enough, a familiar face poked into the doorway, the body it belonged too still hidden behind the wall. It was Dima, her eyes a little wide, but her mouth perfectly neutral.

Kate smiled at the sight, hoping to make her feel comfortable. Kate was definitely not doing the greatest job of making either of them feel comfortable because neither of them had so much as smiled so far, but she hoped that was just because they still had yet to trust her. She wouldn't quite be able to forgive herself if she ended up just being horrible at this and making it worse for them. Maybe she shouldn't have been so...Kate shook her head. There were other better times to freak out and cry.

Dima stared at Kate for a few moments, almost as if she was waiting for permission to come in, before she hesitantly stepped out from the wall. Her companion had yet to show himself yet.

Kate smiled and nodded, gesturing to the seats next to her. "Come in sweetie."

Dima finally stepped into the room, her companion finally appearing as well to follow her. They silently made it to their seats, Dima sitting closer to Kate.

Kate nodded to the two of them. "Sorry about running off so suddenly earlier. I really wish I didn't have to but I had two stacks of forms literally with my name on them and I just had to get those finished."

The two of them shook their heads in unison. "It's fine."

Kate smiled. She really couldn't tell if they meant it, but she was happy they were at least willing to answer for the moment.

"Are you happy with the selection of food here? I can get other things if you want them."

She got the same head shake as before. "It's adequete."

Kate nodded. It didn't seem like she'd got much more out of them and at least it was better than being dismissed as a hallucination. Progress was progress. "Enjoy then."

The two of them nodded in unison and began to eat.

xxxxxXXXXXxxxxx

After a while the sounds of eating faded away to be replaced by complete silence once again.

Zeda and Dima set their utensils down and turned their attention back to Kate, looking almost like soldiers waiting for instructions from their general.

"Had enough you two?"

They both nodded.

"Sure?" Kate smiled at them as softly as she could manage. She got the feeling they weren't being entirely honest and that's all she could think of to make them feel more at ease. She really was horrible at this.

"We're sure."

"ALright then, darlings. Before you two leave. Is there anything you want to talk to me about. Its all perfectly fine. You can tell me anything. If you need anything, or if one of you needs any kind of medical attention. I really didnt get to check that as thoroughly as I would have liked and I'm sorry about that."

Dime seemed to perk up at that and pointed at her companion, scooting back her chair just enough for Kate to get a clear view. Said companion seemed to flinch, looking at Dima with an almost betrayed expression.

"Yes, sweetie. Is there anything you want to say?"

Dima pointed again. Her companion pushed her hand down. "Stop it."

"Darling, Oh I'm sorry I never got your name?"

Her companion huffs. "It's Zeda."

"Thank you, sweetie." Kate smiled. That was an improvement, wasn't it? They hadn't been willing to say either of their names earlier. "Okay, so what seems to be the problem, darling?"

Zeda growled. "There's no problem."

Dima shook her head.

Zeda rolled his eyes. "Shut up."

Kate let out a small sigh. Well there's a reminder that Kate was just deluding herself into thinking things were improving. "Its okay sweetie. If he has a problem we'll wait until he's comfortable enough to bring it up himself, shall we?"

Dima huffed, crossing her arms. Her face flashed with anxiety and frustration before it quickly became neutral again. Zeda, however, seemed to relax at that.

Kate frowned. That definitely wasn't good, but she didn't want to pry, not yet. There was enough of a lack of trust as it stood.

"How about we meet up again in a few hours and see if we're more open to a discussion? You two should get some more rest." Kate smiled. "I'm sorry you two have t be stuck with me, but I'm afraid it just has to be that way for a little, okay?"

Zeda shook his head. "It's fine, really. A lot better than we were expecting."

Dima looked soley at the table, not responding to either of us.

Kate nodded. "Alright then. You two can go back to the room. Do you want me to escort you? Or do you want to spend more time here?" It was a ridiculous idea to ask the last question but her heart was really bad at listening to her brain.

Dima stood up before she managed to finish her last question and all but marched out. Zeda sighed. "We can make it back on our own. I-" As soon as Dima disappeared around the corner, he shook his head. "I gotta-" He sighed. "Yeah." He rushed after her.

Kate let out a soft sigh as they left, waiting until they were out of sigh to rest her head on the table. What had she begun her? She really was stupid to think she could take care of anyone just because she'd done it once in her past. Well it was too late to go back on now. She'd have to try her best until she could pass them onto better hands without any complications.

Kate peeked into the room for the second time that day, hoping they'd be a little more awake this time but also secretly hoping they were sleeping peacefully, that had been such an adorable sight. Waiting longer to talk to them was worth it if she could see that again.

Neither of the twins were asleep, and they weren't even remotely close together. They sat on opposite ends of the bed, Zeda with his arms crossed and a prominent scowl on his face, and Dima hugging her knees, her face buried in her dress.

Immediately Kate could sense something was a little off. They'd never managed to be quit so far apart from each other. She cleared my throat as loudly as she could.

Zeda looked at the wall next to him while Dima hugged her knees visibly tighter.

Kate walked over to Dima first. She looked to be in the most distress at the moment.

Dima tensed as Kate approached her, seeming to hold herself painfully still.

Kate slowed her approach, raising her hands to show they were empty. "Hello, sweetie. How are you doing?"

Dima shook her head, still not raising it.

Kate carefully climbed onto the bed. That wasn't good. So far they'd only told her they were fine even if they sounded untrue, this was not a good sign in the least.

"What is it, darling? Can you tell me?"

Dima lifted one of her hands to gesture to Zeda before hugging her knees again.

Kate turned towards him. "Zeda, sweetie are you okay? Your friend here seems to think you're not."

Zeda scoffed. "I'm. Fine."

Dima flinched and seemed to get even smaller.

Kate sighed. It didn't look like she'd get any cooperation from that front today. Maybe Dima could help her out. She really seemed to be driving herself to worry a lot which meant something was really wrong and Kate couldn't just allow that even if she had to pry a bit more than she perhaps should.

She turned back to Dima. "Alright love, how about this. If you want to tell me something specific just point okay. For an example, if you want to try and do this, touch my left shoulder, otherwise tough the other one."

Dima lifted her head just enough for her eyes to be visible. They were red and she had obviously been crying. She very hesitantly touched Kate's left shoulder.

"Okay darling. Let's start with the first problem." Kate leaned a bit closer to her. "If you want to talk about why you were crying, left shoulder again."

Dima touched her left shoulder again with less hesitation.

Kate nodded encouragingly. That was a good sign. "So why where you crying, sweetie? Is it because of your friend here? We'll keep the left shoulder for yes."

Dima touched the left shoulder once again.

Kate nodded again. "Is it because he's injured and won't tell anyone about it?"

Dima tapped Kate's left shoulder twice, a huge weight obviously being lifted off of her shoulders at that.

Kate nodded. "Give me a second then, darling." She turned back to Zeda.

"Sweetie, will you let me run a scanning spell on you?"

Zeda covered his ears. "I'm not injured."

"Your friend says otherwise, darling. I'm inclined to believe her."

"Well she can mind her own business!" He turned around to glare at Kate, his face turning slightly red.

Kate shook her head. "Look sweetie. You can yell at me all you want, but keep your friend out of it. She's crying and looks ready to collapse out of worry for you. Don't make her feel bad for caring about you, please. Loved ones aren't easy to come by in this world. Cherish the ones you have."

Zeda froze, his eyes widening slighty. He seemed to ponder Kate's words for a moment before promptly bursting into tears, scooting away from the bed until he hit the wall.

"Oh sweetie, no its not..." She trailed off scooting closer to him. She suddenly felt like maybe it was about time she left them alone. She should just heal Zeda and be off. She waved her hand over him, using the command word needed.

"There you go sweetie, that should get rid of the pain. The wounds will close up in a few hours."

"It doesn't matter. It doesn't-" He shook his head, now tugging at his hair. "I'm-" He squeezed his eyes shut, sobbing violently as he pressed himself against the wall, keeping himself far away from both Kate and Dima.

Kate crawled a little closer. "Darling, talk to me. Please. Why doesn't it matter?"

"You took away their point." Zeda whispered it, like he really didn't want Kate to hear him.

Kate scooted a little closer. "I"m afraid I don't understand sweetie."

"I'm not good. I..." He shook his head. "I don't have any loved ones left. I need to hurt."

"Oh sweetie. No one needs to hurt okay. Its true. Maybe you've lost a few loved ones, but there's always the future. You still have someone left. Don't give up hope so easily."

"I killed them." He went back to covering his ears. "I... I killed everyone."

Kate shook her head. "You didn't meant to."

"Does it matter?" Zeda shook his head. "Do intentions matter when there's no one to hear them?"

Kate nodded, fighting down her memories. They had no place here right now. "It matters. It matter so much. Or. Or. Believe me. I. I wouldn't be here."

He finally looked up at her. "What do you mean?"

Kate laughed bitterly. It was a harsh humorless laugh she still couldn't quite get rid of. "More than one universe has been destroyed in a fit of unrestrained grief."

Zeda looked confused for a moment before something seemed to dawn on him. "You... you too, huh?"

Kate nodded, feeling her eyes flash for a moment before she squashed them mercilessly. No one needed to see that darkness.

Zeda stared at her for a few moments before his shoulders started to shake. Kate assumed he was crying again until the noise started. He was laughing. It sounded broken, almost manical. It was a sound that made the lights flicker, but he didn't stop.

Kate scooted a little closer to him, not sure what to say in this moment.

He covered his face. "I thought... I thought I was the only one. That I was the most wretched thing in existence." He shook his head. "That no one would... understand."

Kate smiled. "I remember that feeling."

Zeda shook his head. "I... I don't understand you, Miss Kate."

"Why would that be, sweetie?"

"You're just..." He sighed. "You're not like anyone we've ever met before. And it doesn't make sense."

Kate shrugged. "I'm just me."

"And you is pretty..." He shrugged too.

Kate wasn't entirely sure what he meant but she didn't press the issue. This was already so much progress. She tried to lighten the mood a little.

"Good things I hope?"

"I hope so," he whispered.

Kate smiled softly, a little more genuine than the dark laughter from earlier. He didn't say anthing else. Kate gestured for him to come a little closer.

"Come here sweetie. Both of you. First things first, you two can't afford to be mad at each other. Anyone can see how much you care for each other, and I certainly can better than most. I don't want you fighting with each other if you can help it okay."

Zeda and Dima both stood up, standing at either side of the bed. Zeda looked slightly... sheepish, almost.

Kate scooted back a bit. "I'll leave you two to it then. I shouldn't interrupt. Call me anytime you need it or I'll be back in a few hours again with more food."

Zeda cleared his throat. "Miss Kate?"

Kate nodded. "Yes sweetie? And I've told you I'm just Kate."

"Thank you." He looked away from her as quickly as he could.

"You're very welcome, sweetie."

Dima nodded in agreement, seeming a lot happier than before. She still wasn't smiling, but her tears had stopped.

Kate smiled at them again. "Anything else you need for me, darlings?"

They both shook their heads.

Kate nodded. "Alright. You know how to reach me if you ever need me. If you don't end up needing that, I'll be back with more food in a few hours okay."

They both nodded.

Kate smiled and turned to leave, stopping at the door to turn back for one last smile. Maybe this could happen after all.

Zeda was slowly getting used to having Kate around. She checked on him and Dima every few hours consistently invited them to spend more time around her, and, most recently, had her sights set on having him ask for something from her. Not that he was ever planning on doing so, no. While he was slowly gaining some semblance of a liking to her, it took more than liking someone to ask things of them.

Back in Sparta, which simultaneously felt like no time and all of the time in the world ago, Zeda and Dima had been trained to never make a nuisance of themselves. You ask for things in your barracks, you get mocked. You ask for things on the battlefield, and you get ignored and quite possibly killed. As gods, anything they needed, they simply got themselves. But now, in Kate's own home, it was impossible to tell what exactly to do. While Kate was actively encouraging their inquiries, it felt like some sort of test. Like Kate was quite possibly trying to make them make a mistake.

So when Dima fell ill, Zeda knew he had to keep it from her. At all costs. When Dima's fever started to spike. When her communication became nothing short of a haze. When she barely spent her days awake. Zeda had taken care of her many times before. That was nothing new. He was good at it, in fact.

But everything almost came to a screeching halt when he woke up with a pounding migraine, his eyes squinting under the suddenly harsh lamp. Almost. He ignored the pain and made his way downstairs like nothing was wrong. Because if he suddenly disappeared too, then Kate would really be suspicious, and he wouldn't be able to keep her away.

The elevator door opened to the living room.

"Hello, sweetie," came the greeting almost instantly.

Zeda cleared his throat at the pet name. Not even Dima used those for him. "Hello."

"How are you, sweetie? Need something?"

"Fine. And I'm just here for the food." He swallowed. "To save you the trip."

"That's very kind of you, sweetie. It's honestly no trouble, though. You don't have to keep coming down."

He shook his head. "I don't mind. Really."

Kate nodded with a small smile. "Alright, dear. Do tell me if you need something. You know what to do."

Zeda nodded. "Right, right. Of course."

Kate smiled. "Wonderful."

"So. The food...?" Zeda cautiously approached Kate.

"I'll get it ready for you. Just a moment."

Zeda took a step back. "Yes, of course. Take all of the time you need."

Kate smiled. "Sorry, I didn't have it packed. I thought today was the lucky day you two would come eat with me."

Zeda looked at the floor. "Dima... Dima needs to be alone right now."

Kate waved her hand. "Oh, it's fine, sweetie. You don't have to explain yourself."

Zeda nodded. "Sorry. You just... sounded disappointed."

Kate's smile turned a little sad. "Well... I was. I may have been looking forward to it a little, but that's just silly ol' me building expectations. Don't worry about it."

Zeda hated that. He hated disappointing the one person that allowed him to live after what he'd done.

"We'll... we'll join you again soon, okay?"

Kate smiled. "Take all the time you need."

He nodded, still not looking at Kate. Dima would want to start eating with her again as soon as she felt better. Hopefully, that wouldn't be too far away.

Kate finished up what she was doing and presented a tray. "There you go, darling. Tell Dima I said hello."

He nodded. "She'd like that. Thank you."

Kate smiled. "You're welcome, sweetie."

He nodded and disappeared up the stairs.

Two days later, Zeda came back down for dinner. His headache was far worse than that first day, but that didn't matter. He had to take care of Dima and prevent Kate from getting suspicious.

"Miss Kate?"

He kept his eyes trained on the floor, the normally almost pleasant lights burning his eyes and bruising his brain. He just had to get dinner then he could curl up next to Dima. He just had to make sure she ate.

"Good Morning, Zeda." Something about Kate's voice was a little off today, almost like she was worried about something.

"Morning."

"Sweetie, could you come over here?"

He glanced up to see exactly where Kate was before looking down and shuffling over. "Do you require something from me?"

"I need to ask you a little question, darling. And please be honest with me."

Zeda hummed. "What is it?"

"Are you feeling a little under the weather, sweetie?"

Zeda went rigid. "I'm. Fine."

"Please be honest darling. I can help you."

"I don't need your help."

"Please, sweetie. Let me help. You've been sick for a couple of days now. I can't watch this for much longer."

"How do you know? I feel fine." He crossed his arms.

"I've been taking care of you for a few days now, darling. I can tell when something is a little off with you. Call it a mo... call it instinct."

Zeda grumbled. "Okay. Maybe I have a small headache. Not a big deal. Don't worry."

"No, it's not. I want you two perfectly healthy, darling. I'm responsible for making sure you two are doing well. I realize maybe I'm not the best person for the job, but I still want to try. Please, will you let me help?"

Zeda sighed. "Miss Kate, I've taken care of Dima for thousands of years. I don't..." He took a deep breath. "Thank you for all of your assistance, but we don't need to inconvenience you. I can handle it."

There was the sound of someone getting up. "No, no, darling. It won't be an inconvenience in the slightest. You two are my new life at the moment. I have all the time in the world to give just to you."

Zeda frowned. "We're fine. We'll be fine."

"Darling, can you look at me?"

He sighed and looked up, squinting at the light.

Kate's face was marred with concern as she stepped closer. "Sweetie. I'm here to look after you and protect you, okay? It will be my pleasure to help you because I chose this willingly. Please. It hurts me to see you suffer. I suspect little Dima isn't much better off if she hasn't come down at all."

Zeda swallowed. "She's... she's..." He shook his head.

Kate walked a little closer. "Shall we go check on her then, sweetie? I can make it all better, I promise."

Zeda sighed. "Okay..."

"After you then, darling."

Zeda walked to the elevator, keeping his eyes cast low because of the lights.

Kate walked beside him. He opened the elevator and walked in, waiting for Kate to join him before pressing the button.

Kate was silent as the elevator rode towards its destination, seemingly lost in thought.

Zeda didn't say anything, quietly leading Kate to the room they were staying in. He opened the door.

Dima was curled up in the bed, the blankets up to her chin. Her face was flushed with fever, her face twisted in discomfort.

Zeda rushed to her side. "I'm here. I'm here, Dima." He stroked her hair.

She lifted her head, frowning. The frown caused a slight pang of anxiety in him, but he had been around her enough to ignore it.

Kate all but rushed to her bedside. "Oh, sweetie, how long has it been? She's looking much weaker." She knelt on the floor next to Dima and the then gestured to the bed. "Zeda, you also have a lie down, I'll check on you in a moment since you seem to be handling it a little better."

Kate focused her efforts back and Dima, one arms starting to slowly stroke her hair. "Dima love, is it hurting too much to answer question? Just nod if it is darling."

Zeda fidgeted with his hands. "I'm fine. I can help."

Dima let out a small groan, shaking her head.

"No no. You don't make it worse now. I'll tend to you in a moment darling." Kate turned to Dima again. "Does it hurt anywhere darling?"

Dima nodded. Zeda just stepped next to Kate. "She has a headache and chest pain that comes and goes."

Kate nodded. "Alright. I know how to cure that. It won't be instant. I'm no doctor but I think at least the pain should start to lessen."

Kate kept stroking her hair, now starting to mutter under her breath. It was not a language that Zeda recognized. Her hand started to glow a faint shade of blue.

Zeda gently took Dima's hand. "I'm sorry," he whispered, pressing the back of her hand to his forehead.

He looked back up at Kate. "She also has a fever. She hasn't been eating much."

Kate didn't reply for a moment, still muttering. Her continued to glow until it turned in a small ball of light that seemed to slowly sink into Dima's head. Kate looked up again, her hand still continuing to stroke Dima's hair.

"Thank you for telling me. The fever should start to subside as well. The food. We'll have to do our best to get her to eat a little more once the pain is a little better. It should start to all lessen now. Slowly at first, but it'll be gone before you know it."

"Good." Zeda didn't let go of her hand. "She... she caught something a long time ago, so now whenever she gets sick it gets bad."

Kate nodded. "I see. Well then please come to me immediately in the future okay. We don't want to see Dima in pain, right?"

Zeda looked at the floor. "I've taken care of her before."

"You don't have to anymore, sweetie."

Zeda frowned. "But that's... that's my job. I'm her brother."

Kate nodded. "It is your job sweetie. Of course it is. But now you're not the only one who's there for her. Maybe you don't want to trust me yet, I can understand, but I still would ask you tell me too. Its my job to take care of her too."

Zeda sighed. "I... I can't lose her. She's all I have. All I have had for so, so long."

Kate gestured for Zeda to come closer. "Not anymore sweetie. For what it's worth you have me too now. And I promise you won't ever lose her. Not on my watch."

Zeda stared at her. "I..." He looked away. "I'm going to lay down."

Kate nodded. "You do that then. I'll be with you in a momen, darling, just as soon as I know for certain Dima is getting better."

Kate turned back to Dima. "How are you feeling darling? Better? Worse? Nod if its better."

Zeda settled himself on the bed and covered his ears. It was just a little too much. Kate didn't feel that way. She was probably required to do this by whatever being was even higher than her. As soon as Zeda and Dima were properly registered or classified or whatever, she was going to toss them off to whoever was next. Dima was going to be accepted as a part of the highest fold, and Zeda would be executed for crimes he still couldn't fully comprehend.

He curled slightly into himself. How many days did he have left? How many days by Dima's side before he was carted off the next hell?

There was a shift in the bed and Kate was suddenly sitting next to him. "Your turn sweetie. Dima seems to be on her way to recovery."

Kate's hand was suddenly stroking through his hair, just as gentle as it had been with Dima. He flinched. What was she doing? Why was she pretending he was anything but a death row inmate?

"It'll start to feel better slowly sweetie." Kate started to mutter the same words from earlier.

He closed his eyes. When were the words going to turn bitter? When would-

He froze. What was... what was? That feeling? Kate's hand was warm, but there was a strange sort of... fuzziness that came with it. One that made his mind twist into knots.

"What are you doing?"

Kate paused this time, even thought he glow or the feeling didn't fade. "Using a spell that will make this all start to go away, sweetie. Same one I used on Dima."

He frowned. "What's that fuzzy feeling?"

Kate's face took on a slightly bluish tint. "One of my domains happens to be love. When I use magic on someone I." Kate's voice was a whisper. "care about." It rose again. "It...it... bleeds into it and saturates it."

Zeda blinks. "So that feeling... it's you? Your... care?"

"Sort of..." Kate took a long breath. "It. Its love. Simply put. The little force that wraps around us all holding us together through the darker times." She laughed. "Which is a little ironic for me to control, but such if reality."

"Love." The word felt a little heavy in his mouth.

"Love. You have heard of love before right?"

Zeda nodded slowly. "I... Yes. But, where I'm from that's too vague."

"Hmm, what do you know of it then? Perhaps I can explain. If you want me to."

"Dima and I... we're Greek. So we grew up with eight words for love. Each one with its own separate meaning."

"I see. English is a rather insufficient when it comes to these matters." Kate chuckled. "Well if it comes down to what love I personally control, it would encompass all of them. As for what perhaps you feel at the moment, it might be alone the lines of αγάπη."

Zeda nodded. Selfless love for all of humanity. That's all. That made sense. What else could it possibly be?

Kate smiled, her face getting bluer. "If I'm honest with myself, that wouldn't quite be all that's releasing enough emotion for you to feel. Maybe στοργή is a more accurate feeling to explain this."

Zeda froze. "What?"

Kate's smile turned sheepish. "I know. Its a bit intrusive of me. I get a little attached sometimes. Don't worry. When you two are capable of leaving to lead your own lives again, I won't try to stop you or anything."

Zeda flinched. "I... I don't... you're attached?" He felt himself tearing up. "Even though you're going to...?"

"Well I have to let you go darling. You have lives to live. I'm just here to make sure you two are back to normal before that happens. Don't worry. I won't intrude in your lives for any longer than strictly necessary." Kate let out a little sigh, turning away for a moment. "But I can't help getting a little attached. You two just remind me of...well that's not important."

Zeda shook his head. "But... but you're going to execute me. You're going to... you're going to..."

Kate shook her head so rapidly her head blurred. She looked like someone had just stabbed her.

"I would nev... I...Why would I..what make you....have I really been so bad that you think that?" Her eyes were noticeably moist.

Zeda sat up. "It has nothing to do with you. It's all me. All me. It's what I deserve. That's what happens after this, right? You take Dima to live her life somewhere, and I get what I deserve. And you'll crush my throat and send me to hell in chains and... and..." Zeda clutched his throat.

He had been on death row before. Back when he was twelve, when Dima and him had just rescued those prisoners. It was as scary then. Because he was going to die with Dima. Because he had done the right thing. Everything was different now. Dima would outlive him by millennia and Zeda had ruined everything.

There was a tear in Kate's eyes now. Her hand was shaking ever so slightly. She shook her head, her mouth opening to say something but nothing actually managing to come out. It took her a little longer to finally choke something out.

"If...death is what you deserve, I'd have died a long, long time ago."

Zeda covered his mouth, shaking his head.

Kate shook her head again. "I... I would never. I would never let anything happen to you two while you are under my care. I simply want to see you healed. And then you can live your lives as you wish. Both of you." She seemed to have reganed her composure. "I wouldn't ever let anything happen to either of you, either in my care or otherwise. That's a promise. I may not be very good at taking care of you or providing a place you feel safe in, but I am very good at ensuring good people don't get punished unfairly."

Zeda blinked. "Wait, wait." He was still reeling. This was all too much. He couldn't handle it. And now Kate was worried it was her? He couldn't handle that. He couldn't handle any of this. "I can't. I'm sorry. I just... I just can't." He squeezed his eyes shut.

Kate sighed. "Get some rest and feel better, sweetie. Here let me finish." She muttered something again and another ball of light appeared, sinking into Zeda this time, the feeling from earlier appearing to sink in even stronger.

Zeda's breath hitched. "I'm sorry. I know you're trying. I'm... I'm sorry."

Kate shook her head, finally removing her hand. "No don't be. Its a perfectly reasonable doubt to have. I understand. Rest up dear. Both of you. Be careful. I'll be staying her for a little to ensure you to continue to get better okay. After than I'll run off to get you two some more appropriate food. Anything you want sweetie? You or Dima?"

Zeda shrugged. "It's okay."

"Are you sure you don't want anything?"

Zeda hummed. "The only food that Dima and I found... especially comforting was lost to time.

"What would that be?"

Zeda allowed himself a small smile. "Black soup and rye cakes. A Lacedaemon delicacy. We were lucky to get it."

Kate nodded. "Wonderful. Then you two get some rest. I'll be right back."

Zeda frowned. "There's no surviving recipe."

"There was a recipe once."

Zeda blinked. "Okay...?"

Kate smiled softly. "That's all I need."

Zeda nodded. "Okay. Good luck."

"Thank you sweetie." Kate turned to leave. "JUst focus on feeling better, both of you."

"I will. Thank you... Kate."

"Of course sweetie." Kate turned around as she neared the door, the smile on her face suddenly blinding.

Zeda curled in on himself. Dima shifted behind him until she was spooning him, her head resting gently against his shoulder as she hugged him tightly. Zeda patted her hands. She made a sleepy noise of agreement and kept him close. With a small smile on his face, he closed his eyes.

Kate stepped into the room with tray, doing her hardest no to spill anything or make any sound in case the two of them were sleeping. What greeted her immediately had her heart melting. This really wasn't healthy for her to do, given she'd have to watch the go, but she couldn't help it. They looked so peaceful and happy for a change, all curled up into each other and resting peacefully a far cry from the heart wrenching scene earlier with them in so much pain.

Dima held Zeda's head to her chest, like she was trying to shield him from the world. She held on to him like he was the most precious thing in the world and too many people had already tried to steal him away. Zeda seemed to be doing his best to bury himself in her, like he was terrified he only had a few more seconds before she just evaporated.

Kate stood there for a moment. It felt wrong to disturb them in a momen like this even if they should definitley be getting some food in them around now. The spell would have worked it's magic by now, at least enough to have them feeling a lot less pain if not feeling better. Neither of them stirred, breathing softly as they held each other.

Kate waited for a few more minutes before she finally cleared her throat softly. Dima stirred slightly, but ultimately didn't wake. Kate repated her actions. Dima's eyes fluttered open as she pulled Zeda closer.

"Hello sweetie. I brought some food for you two. Can you wake Zeda?"

Dima nodded. She gently shook Zeda, who finally opened his eyes. "Kate?"

"Hello sweetie. Sorry to disturb your sleep but its time to put some food in both of you. I hope I don't ruin your fond memories of this food with my cooking."

Dima blinked at Zeda. He separated from her. "I told her about black soup."

She glanced at Kate and back at Dima. He nodded. "I guess so."

Kate waited patiently for them to finish their little conversation. They both looked back at her, Zeda looking sufficiently awkward.

"Ready to eat, darlings. Please tell me if it's no good and I'll arrange for someone better to try and cook this for you."

"Trust me. You'll have just as much luck as anyone else."

Kate chuckled. "In that case I might have to get a license to anachronize. But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Would you like to try this?"

They both nodded. Kate brought the tray over, gesturing for them to sit up. They both did so.

Kate offered the tray to them. "Have at it then."

Zeda took the tray, holding it out to Dima, who gently accepted her bowl. She cradled it close to her face as Zeda kept the tray on his lap.

"Enjoy, darlings." Kate smiled, steppping back a little to let them eat.

"Thank you, Kate." Dima nodded. Both of the twins started to eat. Kate watched them with a small smile, hoping she'd done at least a decent job.

Zeda seemed to have the tiniest of smiles. "This... this is almost exactly as I remember it. Thank you. So much."

Kate beamed, her traitorous heart managing to sing. "I'm glad you like it darling."

Dima nodded enthusiastically before turning to tap Zeda on the shoulder. He paused to consider it. "Would she... would she want to hear all of that?" Dima glanced at Kate for a moment before nodding. Kate waited patiently to see what they would share.

"I'm going to ask her." Dima's neutral face seemed to be a very annoyed neutral. Zeda didn't waver. "I'm going to ask."

Kate remained silent for the moment.

Zeda turned to Kate. "Would you... would you want to know about our lives before everything?"

Kate shrugged. "That's upto you darlings? Its your story to tell. I will happily listen."

Dima seemed to look a little triumphant at that. Like she had just been proven right. Zeda rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. Save it."

Both of them shifted to face Kate. "So, yeah. I guess I should ask how much you already know about us."

"Your names darling. Besides other conclusions one can come to based on appearance."

"Well, what are those conclusions?"

"Immortal, young, resilient. A little weathered."

Zeda nodded. "Let's start from the beginning then, yeah?" Dima nodded.

"A beginning is a good place to start a story."

Zeda nodded. "Dima and I were born in Lacedaemon. Sparta, as most call it now. In our now. Then. Then now, I guess."

Kate nodded. "Time is...complicated."

Zeda nodded. "Yeah. And you're an above-god, so I'm assuming you know everything there is to know about Sparta."

"I was there for its birth."

He nodded. "Right. Of course. Well, we were born seven years before the Peloponnesian War."

"Not an ideal time for a childhood."

Dima gently took Zeda's hand as he laughed bitterly. "Not when Spartans leave home to train to be soldiers at seven."

"I would imagine not."

Zeda shook his head. "Our apologies. This was... foolish." Dima set her bowl to the side, now trying to gently grab his face. "I don't know why I thought this was a good idea."

"No, no darling. If you want to tell me, please. Go on."

Zeda huffed. "I'm sure an above-god has better things to do than listen to the story of two child soldiers."

"Well I currently have only one main self imposed duty."

"Right, us. So you've said."

"Yes darlings."

Zeda sighed. "Fine. Okay."

"Only if you're comfortable of course."

Dima patted him on the shoulder as he took a deep breath. "So, at seven years old, my parents get a notice that their two children must be sent into war,"

Kate nodded. "I'm sorry that happened."

Zeda shrugged. "It's fine. It's just how things worked."

Kate nodded. "Regrettably."

"So Dima and I head off to war. We learn how to swordfight. How to kill."

Kate nodded, gesturing for Zeda to continue. He took a deep breath. "We were both pretty good, actually."

"I don't doubt that."

Zeda shrugged. "So yeah. That's where we're from. That's why we're like-" He waved his hand. "-this."

"-this."

Kate smiled softly. "Well then you'll want to move past it then. Its in the past now. You can heal from it. I'll help you if you would want it."

Zeda froze. "There's nothing to heal from. It's fine. It's over and done."

"If you say so darling. But I'm always here."

Dima curled into his side, breathing softly as Zeda nodded. "I know." He let Dima tug him into her grasp. "I know."

Kate smiled. "So anything else you want to tell me or want from me darlings?"

Dima seemed to have fallen asleep so Zeda just shook his head. "No. No, we're fine. Thank you... Kate."

Kate's smile widened. "You're Welcome darling. Well do let me know if you need anything. I'll leave you alone for now."

Zeda nodded as he twisted to nestle into Dima's hold. "Alright."

Kate nodded. "See you soon then darling."

He nodded. "Mhm."

KateHardy says...

Kate carefully opened the door to the room. "Hello darlings!"

Zeda seemed to be mostly fine, but he still had that tightness to his jaw that said that his headache was coming back. Dima, however, seemed to be significantly less aware of everything and was currently holding on to Zeda like he was a particularly nice teddy bear or he had already tried to escape.

Kate's heart melted at the sight. She was getting too attached at this point but she didn't care. Kate tiptoed in a little quieter. She'd just check in very quickly and get out.

Zeda looked at Kate. "She won't let me move," he whispered.

Kate's smile softened immediately, walking over to them making a little more sound. "She looks in need of some comfort."

Dima's grip only tightened on Zeda. He shook his head. "She's... She's protecting me. From something. I don't know what. But she's shielding me."

"And do you need some protection perhaps?"

"I don't know. But if I ever did, she'd be the first one to know."

Kate smiled. "You two have an unshakeable bond. I can see it shine so brightly."

"Thousands of years. Just us. One spear." He watched Dima as if she had said something as she pulled him even closer.

Kate smiled. "I wish that it may never break."

Zeda looked like he had been punched. "If... if it was ever going to break, it would be when I broke the world."

"Well its a good thing it didn't break then."

He looked at Dima. "Yeah. I am too..."

Dima huffed quietly, poking Zeda gently, her eyes opening slightly.

Kate smiled. "Good."

Dima looked up at Kate, making a small noise of acknowledgment.

"Heyy sweetie! Is she feeling a bit better now Zeda?"

Zeda nodded. "She's feeling better. More stable."

Kate nodded, the warm feeling in her heart spreading. "That's great to hear."

Zeda's face turned slightly pink. "She... she wants to thank you."

"Aww tell her she's very very welcome."

Zeda seemed to turn even more pink at that. "She can... she can hear you."

Kate smiled and leaned in closer. "You're very, very welcome darling."

Dima nodded, looking slightly amused despite her very neutral face. Zeda, meanwhile, looked like he was sunburnt and trembling.

"You okay there darling?"

"Fine!" He grabbed a fistful of covers and promptly disappeared from view, only a bundle of blankets in Dima's arms now. Kate smiled.

"Very cozy there sweetie." She moved closer to them. "So anything either of you want or need today?"

Dima covered her mouth, looking like she was trying her best not to burst into laughter. She shook her head. Zeda conveniently forgot to respond.

Kate walked closer. "You sure darlings?"

Zeda made a small, "We're fine. You've been... great."

A soft warm glow spread through Kate at those words. It was...a lot to hear that. Kate tried not to tear up.

"Th...thank you sweetheart. You two have been wonderful for me too."

Dima seemed to have calmed down and lowered her hand, patting Zeda on the shoulder.

But Zeda just emerged from his hiding place. "I doubt that."

Kate waited carefully, used to the two of them having their silent conversations now. They'd speak up when Kate needed to be involved.

Zeda shook his head. "I mean, what have we done for you?" He looked up at Kate.

Kate smiled. "You've been so easy to take care of and so fulfilling. Perhaps its selfish like I said the other day but I've ended up a little attached and seeing you two heal and get better has been a beautiful experience and allowing me to continue to be a part of that is a great honor."

Dima humphed, poking Zeda again. He groaned, taking back his hiding place."

Kate simply smiled, a little amused by their antics. Dima patted where Zeda's must be and looked up at Kate, waving her hand dismissively.

"I should ignore his antics?"

Dima waved her hand in a so-so way.

Kate hummed. "I'll keep that in mind sweetie."

Dima nodded.

"Well then if you two don't need me, I should probably head off again. You seem to be healing quite well. It won't be long before everything is back to normal."

Dima shook her head, patting the empty spot of the bed next to them.

Kate raised her eyebrows. Were her hopes rising rapidly that maybe they wanted her around? Yes. Was that a bad idea? Very much so. Kate walked over cautiously until she was leaning on the bed.

"You want me to...to...stay?"

Kate prepared herself for a harsh rejection. Maybe some laughter. But, Dima just nodded again. Zeda finally emerged again. "She's busy, Dima. She probably can't."

Kate shook her head, not daring to believe this was happening. Was she dreaming? No that was impossible. The dream hadn't been this positive. She carefully climbed onto the spot Dima indicated.

"I'm not busy darlings. Remember. My duty is to you two."

Zeda scowled and crossed his arms at that. "Well, I'm sure you have a life outside of us."

"As my own sister put it. I hardly have anything worth calling a life."

Zeda snorted and Dime slapped a hand over her mouth so fast, Kate could see her cringe.

Kate giggled. "I'm glad you find it amusing darlings. My sister would love to know her analysis was well received."

"Maybe not as well received as much as..." He looked to Dima, clearly expecting some help. Dima nodded as Zeda finally pieced together, "...not what we were expecting."

Kate shrugged. "I suppose. Most people generally have something to live for. Its an easy assumption to make."

Zeda and Dima both nodded quickly. Zeda swallowed. "We didn't mean to... offend."

Kate shook her head, a small smile on her face. "Oh no darlings. You didn't offend me. Not at all. I'm sorry for being so curt about it. I... work too much sometimes and its enjoyable but perhaps I do in fact spend a little too long in it."

"Oh." Zeda nodded. "Oh, okay."

Kate shook her head. "But that's no matter. I...umm...I perhaps have more of a reason to be at home now. I want to be there for you two. Now what did you want me here for?"

Dima shrugged and just gestured aimlessly. Kate was pretty sure she was one more gesture like that away from crying like a baby. Did they really just want her here for her presence and not something?

"Oh..."

Dima blinked, looking at Zeda. He frowned. "She meant we- she just wants you here."

Kate blinked dabbing at her eyes before anyone could see. "Ohh..that...that's wonderful darling. I would...I would love to be here."

Dima nodded. Zeda crossed his arms, like he was doing a very bad job of pretending to be nonchalant.

Kate smiled. "Do you perhaps want to hear a little story?"

Dima perked up. Zeda hummed. "Story?"

"Yes a little story."

They nodded in unison.

"Wonderful then. Settle in."

The twins shifted so that they better faced Kate, Dima now spooning Zeda. Kate smiled softly.

"Is it okay if its a story from work? I promise its cool."

They both nodded. "We don't actually know what you do for work. And besides..." Zeda shrugged. "We haven't stopped working since we were seven. So, we don't mind."

Kate nodded. "Alright. Well..it was a sunny day, far too sunny for what we were about to do>"

Zeda and Dima scooted a little closer, their eyes wide. Kate let out a little sigh. "A galactic empire had imprisoned a whole planet. It was...not pretty. All of that was over a trade route of all things."

Zeda and Dima cringed in unison, Dima's grip tightening.

"We'd tried everything, all of the negotiation possible but they shut us down. In fact the council was ready to declare it a lost cause but I took a few of my most loyal friends and told them we were going to do something whether they wanted to or not so they let us go, right into the heart of that planet."

Dima poked Kate gently. Zeda cleared his throat. "She's... she's wondering if you wanted to say their names."

"Oh sure." Kate smiled fondly at that memory. it had been a good day as terrible as it had started out. "Well there was me, and my sister Jennifer."

Dima nodded.

"Then we had our assassins Tappu and Chud. You could always count on those two if you wanted to sneak in anywhere."

Their eyes both widened. "Assassins?" Zeda didn't sound scared, just... slightly in awe.

"Yes. best there ever was if I do say so myself."

Zeda and Dima exchanged a glance, Dima's her usual mildly happy neutral and Zeda's borderline gleeful.

"Then we had Vankous, sorcerer supreme around these parts. We needed him for the people who couldn't shapeshift."

The twins both nodded eagerly.

"And last of all Stean. A reliable old soul. That was the main team that went in. Of course we had support on the outside, three of them. James and Ray and our getaway man Sean."

Dima stared intently at Zeda for a moment, most likely rattling something off to him for one of their silent conversations. He nodded. "I know..."

Kate let them finish their conversation, pausing her story for a moment. They both turned back to her, looking a little starstruck. Kate smiled softly and continued.

"So of course the main set, me and Jen shapeshifted alongside Vankous, the other three under cloaking spells pretended to get captured alongside them. It was the hardest part, pretending to bow down to those fools."

Dima and Zeda scowled, seeming to sympathize with that last sentence. Kate sighed. "It was painful, waiting for a full week in there so we get a complete lay of the land and Ray and James up in our ship could gain completely control over every internal system in the prison. It was restless but we managed, doing our hardest to cover every inch of that prison discretely in the nights."

Dima held Zeda a little closer, cradling his head to her chest.

"It was a painful week. But after that we had everything we needed, so on the ninth day, we launched our attacks right from within."

Dima nodded, her grip on Zeda remaining tight. Kate smiled. "It went amazingly that day. We were so proud. I turned the skies red that day a warning sign if you will and as I summoned a storm to engulf the planet Ray and James up there disabled every single security feature in there. There were ten thousand guards in that prison, in the span of fifteen minutes a disoriented and terrified guard force was put to sleep and put into their own cages freeing everyone inside."

Dima silently clapped her hands, moving them so they made no noise. Zeda escaped Dima's chest and looked up at her. "That's... amazing, Kate."

Kate smiled. "It was an amazing day, seeing the smiles of a whole planet freed and reunited. I won't ever forget the happiness that was present that day."

Zeda smiled gently. "Yeah." He glanced at Dima. "Yeah, it's a great feeling."

"it is darlings. And well that brings us to the end of our story. A planet freed and we get out as silently as we came. The people thought it was an act of god and they were happy. We silently slipped away also happy. It was a good day."

Zeda and Dima nodded. "That... that sounds like a good day. Congratulations."

"Thank you darlings. Well that was the story." Kate did a little bow.

Zeda snorted. "Lovely story, Kate."

"Thank you sweetie." She giggled. "Well...care to share another story with an old lady."

The twins both nodded. "What next? Another story from your work?"

Kate shrugged. "I can think of another one or two. Or perhaps either of you want to share one?"

Zeda went a little pink. "I'm not sure if we have any... cool stories."

Kate waved a hand. "That's fine as long as you're willing to share it I'm ready to listen."

Dima hugged Zeda tighter. He sighed. "I don't... maybe? It might... help for her to know why." She shook her head. "I know it's... a lot, but-"

Kate waited patiently again. Zeda sighed. "I think she should know. That we're gods. And why." Dima sighed too, but nodded. She ran her hand through Zeda's hair.

Kate simply smiled wider. They were trying to open up to her at least a little and it was heartening.

Zeda looked back up at Kate. "Kate, Dima and I... are gods. I'm the god of power and control. She is the goddess of fear."

Kate nodded. "Not surprising."

Zeda blinked. "Not... at all?"

"Its not the most outlandish idea to imagine you two would be gods."

Dima gave him a deadpan look. Zeda turned bright red. "Shut up." Kate couldn't help the little giggle that escaped her. That looked far too much like something she'd do with Jason.

Zeda groaned and sunk down, disappearing from view.

"Sweetie why are you hiding?"

He groaned louder. Dima patted his head. Kate giggled again. "Cute."

Both of the twins froze. Dima seemed to practically crack her neck with how quickly she had to look away, slapping a hand over her mouth. Zeda looked up again, his face even redder and his eyes wide. "Huh?"

Kate froze. "Sorry. Sorry. I probably made you uncomfortable."

The twins looked like they had never been called that in their life and now that they had been, they were...

It was impossible to tell what they were feeling other than very, very flustered.

Kate tried a smile. Zeda cleared his throat. "Well. Well. Yeah. Story. From how we... yeah."

"I'm all ears sweetie."

Zeda swallowed. "Well. I said how we were... soldiers before. Long time ago." Kate nodded. Zeda nodded. "Well, it was Sparta against Athens. And while Sparta was superior, Athens had its... victories." Dima held him tighter.

"I have a feeling these victories weren't pleasant."

"Not if you were Spartan." He took a deep breath. "And one day, it was another rare Athens victory, and they take an unprecedented amount of captives." Dima looked like she was trying to wrap around him, as if she could physically shield him. "Dima and I were two of them."

KAte gasped quietly. She hadn't quite expected for things to go that way even though she was expecting the worst.

Zeda grimaced slightly. "The war wasn't... pretty."

"Wars never are."

Zeda and Dima nodded slowly. Kate nodded along.

Zeda cleared his throat. "Well, they captured twenty of us. Mostly the... children, really. Young, inexperienced, small. We didn't have any powers back then. I mean sure, we were soldiers, but so were they."

Kate nodded. "There are people who unfortunately love to do that a little too much."

Something had shifted behind Dima's neutral face. Now she looked... angry, almost. Like hearing this was like swallowing acid. Zeda however, just barreled onward. "And the Athenians... everyone remembers the Spartans as cruel and unjust and violent, but that's only because they lost in the end. Athens was just as bad."

Kate nodded. "A fact that still drives me up the wall."

Zeda nodded. "I'll... spare you most of the details, but... they weren't kind. It-" His voice strained slightly and he shook his head. "It wasn't a good place to be."

Dima sighed softly. Zeda shook his head again. "I'm not telling her that..."

"I imagine it can't have been easy and certainly not at such a young age. Being captured and forced to be a soldier and then to be..." Kate sighed, blinking away long, long since archived memories. "It can break a person very easily. You're very very strong to have made it this far."

Both of the twins looked a little... surprised at that, like they had never considered that angle or never heard that before. As if they never stopped to consider just how much strength it took. Kate really really wanted to hug both of them very tightly right about now. The twins looked like they hadn't been shown much love in their lives to be so surprised at a reaction that should've been commonplace. Kate very much wanted to give them that love.

Zeda fish mouthed for a moment before he shook his head. "Well, regardless. We made it through because we... decided to do our own prison break."

"Then you were even stronger than I thought before."

Zeda was looking a little pink again, but Dima was laughing now. She was staring intently at Kate, almost like she was trying to read her.

Kate smiled at Dima. Oh she was going to start snapping pictures and staring at them if they continued being this cute.

Zeda seemed to just stay frozen for a moment before abruptly continuing. "We... we weren't... nearly as prepared as you. We could've got everyone killed for all we knew, but... we had to try."

"Trying for a better future never seems the best option because of the danger that lies along with it but its the only way to avoid things becoming even worse. Y'all were very brave to try."

Zeda was now definitely red, and Dima... Dima loosened her grip on Zeda, still watching Kate like she was trying to figure something out.

Kate waited patiently to see what more Zeda would be willing to sure. She couldn't begin to imagine how difficult it must be. Well she had an idea of how difficult it was bit she definitely didn't want to recall those memories right now.

Zeda swallowed. "Well... well... it was just Dima and I. Dima took care of the guards. The ones who could call for help. I... I helped the prisoners."

"A very brave effort indeed. And just the two of you. Impressive to take such a risk as mortals."

Dima covered her mouth again, her eyes going wide. Zeda cleared his throat. "I know... I heard..."

Kate leaned in closer again.

Dima covered her mouth a little tighter. Zeda swallowed. "From what she's told me... Dima was terrifying. She lurked in the shadows, using nothing but her voice and her chains to echo across the camp. She made them fear her, all without ever being seen."

Kate smiled. She felt...proud. It didn't feel like the right word but that was a tactic that was right out of younger Kate's guidebook. "Oh that's delightful. Its quite powerful how much you can sometimes do with very little and to leverage that calmly enough to be effective with the stakes you describe is nothing short of incredible."

Dima'a eyes just widened more as Zeda rolled his eyes. "You'll give her a complex."

"If you do work that impressive you deserve one."

Dima looked like she was about either faint or squeal. Zeda just patted her on the shoulder. "Mhm. I was... less impressive. I just guided the prisoners through the camp. If I ran into a guard Dima missed..." He shrugged. "I just tried to stay intimidating."

Dima scoffed and smacked him on the shoulder. Zeda frowned. "Fine. Maybe I had the ability to... make people do what I wanted."

"That's a taxing method in its own right. Not quite as clean but no less of a mental challenge. Its certainly just as impressive sweetie."

Zeda turned even more red. "It was just... it was dark... I was fast... they were scared... wasn't hard to convince them in their own best interest..."

"That still takes a lot of mental strength to say nothing of the physical."

Zeda looked like he was shaking at this point. "Mmm."

Kate smiled a little softer. Zeda didn't look at Kate as he continued. "I... the prisoners... made it out. Dima and I... met up right outside of their camp. To make sure we weren't followed."

"Always an important thing to remember."

Dima's now relaxed grip disappeared as she suddenly squeezed him, burying her face in his hair. Zeda sighed. "We... we were followed."

"That never ends particularly well." Kate sighed.

Zeda shrugged. "We... we had waited until the prisoners had... disappeared into the forest. It was just us. Just the ones who... did it."

Kate nodded. "A noble plan."

Dima held Zeda impossibly tighter. "We... we were recaptured. And..." He took deep breath. "Sentenced. To death."

Kate gasped. She needed to hug these two now. She didn't know what to say. Zeda shrugged. "We... we knew the risks. We accepted them. We knew what would happen to us. We were thankful it was no one else..."

Kate couldn't take it much longer. She scooted closer. "That's...that's very brave to take such a choice despite all of those risks weighting so heavily and then actually remain behind without first saving yourselves."

Zeda shrugged. "It didn't make sense to do anything else."

Kate nodded. "Of course."

"And besides, we were just kids." Zeda shrugged. "We were underestimated, not as guarded. Better us than any of the adults."

"A...a very brave choice indeed." Kate could feel the tears coming now. If there was one thing she would ever wish on anyone is to experience something like that.

Zeda sighed. "Maybe. But it... it got us to..." He swallowed. "The board." His voice dropped to a whisper as Dima now visibly shook. Kate couldn't take it anymore, leaning in to wrap an arm around both of them.

Both of the twins froze, looking up at Kate with twin looks of confusion and something that seemed almost like awe.

"You two were so brave. I'm sorry. Its just. I need to hug you both darlings."

Zeda and Dima didn't react, they just stared. Like Kate was doing something taboo, something no one had dared to do before. Kate didn't want to let go just t. The twins didn't hug her back, they were much too tangled together for that, but they didn't seem... unhappy. Zeda was soon back to being bright red, opening and closing his mouth a few times before he gave up.

Kate pulled away after a few moments. "Sorry that was sudden."

Dima shook her head quickly. Kate shook her head.

"No No. I'm sorry. I didn't even ask. That was horrible of me."

Dima shook her head again. Zeda cleared his throat. "It's... it's fine..."

Kate nodded. "If...if...it...truly was..fine. then..umm." Kate trailed off.

Dima nodded and gestured with her head. Kate tried to resist the urge to ask to hug them again. It was far too early. Dima frowned for half a second before going neutral again. She gestured again.

"What do you need darling?" Kate scooted closer on instinct.

Dima huffed and opened her hands against Zeda's chest. Zeda flushed again. "She's... she's asking for you to... again..."

"Ohh.." Kate didn't need to be told twice. She went in for another hug. Dima nestled into her arms. Kate held her as tight as she dared, willing the love that swirled within her to pour out more powerfully than normal. A small gasp tore out of Dima as he held Zeda tighter, burying her face in his shoulder. Kate did her best to be as comforting as she could be.

Zeda buried himself into Dima. "Do you... do you know what the board is?"

"There are a lot of boards I've heard of over the years."

"The Ancient Greek one."

"I've heard of it in passing."

"Do you... know how it works?"

"Roughly but not specifically no."

Zeda swallowed. "They strap you to this... wooden plank. By your wrists and your ankles. And... and... your neck." Kate hugged them tighter. Zeda's breath was getting faster. "They would... they would start loose. Just enough to keep you still. And then... they... tighten it. And tighten it. Until..." Zeda fell silent.

Kate squeezed them tighter. "That must have been horrible. You were so strong. Both of you."

Dima stroked Zeda's hair, cradling him to her chest. He took a deep breath. "I... I was supposed to go first. They were going to force Zeda to watch."

Kate cracked at the idea, her tears let lose now, channeling all of the love she felt into the this hug. Both of the twins shuddered, Zeda making a small noise in the back of his throat. Kate held them tighter.

"They... they had strapped my ankles and wrists down before everyone just... stopped." Kate listened intently, trying to discretely wipe the tears falling.

"Do you know what a Soul-Taker is?"

"I do."

"Well... a soul-taker was intervening. Stepping in. I... I thought he was coming to kill us. For godly execution."

"Couldn't be."

"He... took our souls. And we woke up in Theopius Latium, ready to die and suffer forever and..." He glanced at Dima behind him. "We were given godhood."

"As you should have been."

Zeda nodded. "Dima... her magic is so powerful that even hearing her voice can fill you with fear so powerful it can stop your heart."

"Powerful indeed."

Zeda nodded. "Much more powerful than me."

Dima responded kindly by smacking him again. Kate managed a small chuckled through her tears. "You're both powerful in your own ways."

Dima and Zeda seemed to have a very intense staring contest before Zeda rolled his eyes. "I guess." Kate managed a small chuckle again. "I'm glad I met you two."

Zeda turned bright red as Dima slapped a hand over her mouth again. She shook Zeda gently. He nodded. "I heard. I heard her, Dima. I heard her!" Kate gave them both another squeeze. This was going to be a hard journey but things were getting better now. Maybe she was being a little too optimistic thinking this little bit of opening up was going to lead anywhere but she liked being optimistic.

WeepingWisteria says...

Dima stalked to the living room, hoping against all hope that Kate would be there. She didn't really know her schedule, so for all she knew Kate was already in bed or at work. She held on to the doorway, peeking her head slightly through.

Kate was sitting on the sofa, staring out into the semi darkness seemingly lost in thought. Dima took a deep breath and stepped into the doorway fully, lacing her hands behind her back. Kate almost immediately turned to her, a bright smile lighting up her face. Dima froze, feeling a bit like a deer caught in headlights. Kate was an above god. One wrong move, and she had the power to rip her entire existence to shreds.

She swallowed, watching her with wide eyes. Kate continued to smile at her, the smile softening as she contnued to look at Dima. She blinked. It was now or never.

She wanted to talk to Kate.

Having her power being so close to an above god, someone that could grab it and tug until she spiraled into nothing, was slightly terrifying. And she knew everything about terrifying. But Kate wouldn't do that. Right?

She gently gathered up the edges of her presence and sent it gently towards Kate, swirling just outside the bubble of her immediate influence. Asking for permission to continue, to use such weak powers for an above god.

Kate's smile widened even though she didn't budge, still looking softly at Dima. Was that a good sign? A blessing? She took a deep breath and proceeded, spreading into Kate's sphere of influence. If Kate was strong enough, she could kill her now. Tug on her until her soul cracked with the effort.

But she didn't think about that, she just slowly, painstakingly eased her way to Kate's mind.

A clear and soft voice rose out of Kate. "Hello sweetie."

Dima eased her presence over Kate's mind, like a cat curling up on someone's lap. Hello. Kate's smile widened, her gaze somehow softening up even further.

Dima slowly walked into the room, letting her presence get accustomed to Kate's closeness.

Hello darling! Did you need something?"

Dima shook her head. No. I don't... need anything. She made it to the sofa, awkwardly standing in front of Kate.

Kate's nodded. Okay darling.

Dima hesitated. Was Kate busy? Was she allowed to sit remotely close to her? Kate leaned into her seat with a small sigh, still looking at Dima softly.

She blinked. Am I... allowed to...? She gestured vaguely towards the couch and Kate. Kate nodded, patting the spot next to her. Of course.

Dima blinked. Right. Of course. Sitting next to Kate. Anything else would be... inappropriate.

She sat down next to Kate, not quite touching her.

Kate settled in a bit more comfortably to her seat, letting out a soft sigh. Dima watched her quietly, folding her hands in her lap. Kate smiled down at Dima, seemingly content to let Dima make the first move. But first move to what, Dima wasn't sure. She didn't want to upset her...

After a while Kate spoke up again. So what brings you here darling?"

Dima froze. Somehow another hug didn't seem like the right answer. I... I wanted you to hear me. And that wasn't a lie. She had wanted Kate to finally be able to hear her.

I...I'm honored darling.

Dima turned away. Honor's all mine, really.

Well thank you darling. Do you...do you...do you want to come a little closer. Its a bit cold here.

Dima nodded and almost immediately leaned against Kate's side. If she wanted her closer, she desperately wanted to be closer. Kate's arm slowly snaked around her. Is...is this okay darling?"

Dima nuzzled into her side. Perfect. Kate pulled her closer. Thank you for trusting me enough to let me hear you darling.

Thank you for trusting me.

Of course darling. Kate pulled her closer. Dima pressed herself against Kate, humming in response. Kate opened her arms wider, letting Dima setle in closer. Dima was pratically burrowed into her, twisting awkwardly to avoid settling into her lap and making her uncomfortable. Kate let her adjust for a while carefully pulling Dima closer and closer. Dima huffed. This was amazing, but she couldn't help herself from wanting more.

Kate pulled her even closer. If you're not comfortable like that do you want to try my lap sweetie?"

Dima didn't even answer before she pratically scrambled and into Kate's lap, pressing herself into her chest. Kate held her close, making a funny face. You look so cute like this.

Dima giggled. She was in Kate's lap. She was talking to her. What could go wrong?

She froze. She had laughed. She had just laughed. In front of Kate. She tried to pull back, now gasping for breath. I'm sorry! I didn't mean to! I'm sorry. I'll go. I'll go.

Kate gave her a confused look. Why darling? That giggle was adorable.

She kept hyperventilating. Her laughter was infused with her magic. It made filled people with dread, made them mad with paranoia. She shook her head. I didn't mean to. I'm sorry!

Kate shook her head. Well I was very much trying to make you giggle sweetie. Why do you think its so bad? It was so cute. I promise i'm not exaggerating when I say it definitely made my day better.

You're not... you're not scared? Dima's breath slowed down. You... you liked it?

Of course. It was the cutest little giggle.

Dima blinked. No... intense feelings of paranoia? Like someone's watching you?

Kate shook her head, looking a little confused. Why would?

I'm the goddess of fear. Every smile, noise I make, every language- Dima patted Kate's cheek. Are your effects just delayed?

Kate shook her head, with a small smile, understanding dawning on her. I'm the princess of darkness darling. I'm...how would you put. I'm sort of like the mother of all fear. It...It won't affect me darling.

Dima blinked. Not... affected at all? By anything? No one's... no one's been able to hear me laugh. Except Zeda. And now you... She shook her head.

Kate nodded. Yes sweetie. No effect at all.

Dima crashed into her, hugging her as tightly as she could.

Kate held her just as tight. No one. No one except Zeda. Everyone's afraid of me. Afraid of him by proxy.

Well I'm not going to be afraid of you.

Dima wrapped her legs around Kate's waist. Is it...it okay if I kiss you forehead sweetie?

Dima nodded. That would be... nice, actually. Kate leaned in to give her a soft kiss on the forehead.

I... I liked that.

Good...so...so did I.

I... maybe you... should do it... again. Kate almost immediately leaned in to give her another soft kiss. Dima smiled, nuzzling into Kate's chest. You're very comfortable to hold.

Dima couldn't help but giggle again. It was safe, she said. You're very comfortable to lay on.

I'm glad you find it so.

Dima nodded, nuzzling in again. Kate kissed her once again. Dima giggled again. I'm getting addicted to doing that. Sorry.

She shook her head. Don't apologize.

If you insist.

Dima nodded. I do.

Then prepare to get kisses.

Dima giggled. You remind me of my mom.

Kate giggled along with her. I hope I can give you at least a fraction of the comfort and safety.

Dima hummed. You're doing a good job.

Kate held her tighter. Thank you sweetie.

And... don't mind Zeda. He's going through a lot right now and it's not your fault.

Thank you for saying that darling. I just hope I can help him without making things worse.

He's going to want that help first.

I'll do my best sweetie.

I know you will. Dima tapped Kate's temple. Because I hear you too. Kate smiled. Thank you for beleiving in me.

Thank you for being someone worth believing in. Kate gave her another kiss on the forehead. Thank you for thinking I'm someone worth believing in.

Dima giggled. You can't just keep stealing me lines forever.

Try me darling. I have two siblings. I'm an expert at this.

Dima huffed. Well, thank you for even taking us in the first place.

Kate giggled. Of course sweetie.

Dima hummed. See? I won.

Kate gasped. Oh my. What ever will I do?

Dima shrugged. I don't know. Too busy reveling in the sweet nectar of victory and the velvet kiss of my laurel.

Oh...Oh..that's...well prepare for revenge. Kate promptly started tickling her.

Dima shrieked, giggling madly as she tried to wiggle away. Kate! Kate kept at it. You're not getting away that easily darling.

Dima kept giggling, trying her best to fight her away out of Kate's grasp. Kate didn't relent yet. Come on sweetie. All you ahve to do is declare me the winner. Or give me a kiss on the cheek.

Can't kiss you on the cheek if I'm being attacked! Kate didn't stop. Oh that won't work on my young lady.

Dima giggled harder. But I won! Fair and square!

That was a devious move. I'd hardly all it fair.

Dima tried to bat Kate's hands away. How was it devious?

You tricked me. Kate pouted. I at least need a kiss to make up for the shame.

How did I trick you? Dima tried to twist around, trying to squirm out of Kate's arms.

Kate didn't let her. You made me believe we'd finished the game.

That's your fault for thinking I'd just give up!

Kate pouted. Fine. You win but you still have to make up for embarassing me.

Then stop attacking me! Kate finally stopped, pulling Dima close again. Her pout deepened. I like hearing you giggle.

Dima giggled. Well, you can now.

Good. Kate gave her another kiss. Oh you're so adorable sweetie.

Dima giggled harder, an instense feeling of giddiness washing over her. Kate held her just a little tighter. Dima snuggled just a little closer in response. Comfortable?

Dima nodded. Very.

Wonderful. Dima hummed. Kate stayed in that position settling right into the sofa. Dima followed easily, reclining into her easily. Kate let out a satisfied hum. Dima nuzzled into her, trying to press herself as close to her as possible. Kate's grip only seemed to tighten around her. Dima only pressed against her more.

Darling do you want to get to a bed?

Hmm?

Lie down? Its a little late sweetie.

Dima hugged her tighter. Don't want to let go yet.

Kate seemed to think about somthing for a moment. If. if you want darling. We. We can cuddle. I. I can carry you.

Dima pulled back, looking up at Kate and giving her the most pleading eyes she could manage. Please?

If you want it sweetie, just say yes.

Yes. Dima pulled back just a bit. And maybe some more yes.

Kate smiled, already standing up with Dima held carefully in her arms. Let's go then sweetie. Are you comfortable like this?

Dima giggled, holding on to Kate tightly. I am. Kate booped her nose. Wonderful. She started to walk. Dima just giggled again. Kate didn't take long to arrive at the bedroom, at the door hardly a minute later. Dima rested her head on Kate's shoulder.

Here we are darling.

Dima hummed in response. Kate slowly sat down on the bed, laying down and settling Dima carefully by her side. Dima curled against Kate as close as she could possibly get. Kate wrapped an arm securely around Dima. Dima burrowed as close as she possibly could without climbing on top of her.

Kate turned to face Dima and pulled her closer. Better now sweetie?

Dima nodded. Good enough.

Oh. Does that mean it could be better?

Dima flushed. I... didn't mean to say that.

Kate leaned in closer. Its fine sweetie. Do you want to be somewhere more comfortable. Its perfectly all right to ask darling. Was the couch better?

Dima shook her head. No. This is better than the couch.

Do you want to lie down on top of me then? You seemed to enjoy being in my lap.

Dima nodded slowly. Kate gestured for her. Come on then sweetie. Dima slowly made her way to sprawl across Kate's chest, sighing softly. Kate smiled softly, pulling her into a gentle hug. Dima nestled into a comfortable position.

Better.

Dima nodded, letting out another soft sigh. Kate held her tighter. Good.

Dima yawned slightly, wrapping herself around Kate. Kate started to hum a soft tune.

Don't... don't let me fall asleep...

I won't darling.

Can't let Zeda sleep alone... he gets nightmares when alone...

Okay darling. I'll be sure to get you bck to him.

Dima nodded, nuzzling even more into Kate. Kate smiled softly. Dima smiled softly back. Rest easy sweetie. Don't worry. I'll get you to Zeda even if you do fall asleep.

Dima nodded. I trust you.

Thakn you for trusting me.

Thank you for being trustworthy.

We're back in our loop again sweetie.

I'll win. Again.

Is that a challenge darling?"

Dima hummed. I think you're just bitter. Kate giggled. Oh I'm the bitter old woman now.

Dima giggled too. I have that affect.

Do you now?

Dima nodded. I'm a four thousand year old nightmare child. I've made a few gods bitter.

Kate kissed her forehead.Don't think you could do that to me though.[/i[]

[i]You just said I did.

Touche.

Dima huffed. Now you're lying to me.

Fine. Fine. I'm a bitter old woman. Don't you think she deserves a kiss?

Dima reached up to gently kiss Kate on the cheek. She giggled. Like that? Kate smiled softly. Thank you. You're making a bitter old woman feel very sweet.

Dima giggled. Good.

Kate giggled along with her. Oh you really are very adorable.

Dima giggled harder, ducking to hide her face. Too nice.

Only saying the truth.

Being far too nice.

No. Honest.

Nice.

Honest.

Nice.

Honest.

Dima narrowed her eyes. Nice. Kate giggled. Honest.

Dima huffed, her face twisting into a playful scowl. Nice.

Kate pouted. Honest.

Dima shook her head. Nice.

Kate's pout deepeed. Honest.

Dima just deepened her own playful scowl. Nice.

Kate didn't relent either. Honest.

Nice!

Honest!

Nice, nice, nice.

Kate prompty started to tickle her again. Dima shrieked again, trying to sit up and wiggle away. Kate didn't seem to have any plans of stoppping. Dima tried to roll to the side. Kate followed her. Dima shrieked again, giggling even louder. Accept that you're adorable.

Dima shook her head, trying to curl into a ball. Kate pouted and tickled her some more. Dima kept giggling, now trying to grab Kate's hands. Adorable. Adorable.

No!

Yes.

Dima wrapped a hand around Kate's wrist. Aceept it

Dima giggled. Fine! Fine! I accept. I accept defeat! Kate stopped.Good.

Dima kept giggling, curled tightly into herself. Good. You are adorable and you should know it.

Dima giggled even harder, covering her face. Kate kisses the hands covering her fce. Dima lowered her hands slightly. Don't hide that adorable face.

Dima shook her head. Now you're just being mean.

I'm not.

You are! Now you're abusing my desperate confession. Dima lowered her hands and scowled.

But darling. I'm just trying to get you to accept the simple truth.

Dima collapsed against Kate's shoulder. Kate pulled her close again. Dima weaseled back on top of her. Hello there darling.

Dima hummed. Hello.

Ready to accept your fate?

Dima huffed. Fine.

Good.

Dima let her eyes flutter shut as she sank into Kate. Kate started to hum a soft tune. Dima yawned again. Kate started to slowly stroke her back. Dima felt herself drifting off, her grip loosening as she did so. Kate's singing became softer and softer. Dima fell asleep, completely relaxing in Kate's arms.

xxxxXXXxxxx

Dima felt herself be deposited carefully onto a bed. Dima stirred slightly, peeking at the room through her lashes.

"Good night loves," whispered Kate.

Dima smiled to herself softly, moving in the bed until she felt Zeda press into her chest. As soon as he made contact, she pulled him close and relaxed. A soft kiss was pressed to her forehead. Dima hummed in appreciation. Then the sensation was gone. Dima felt herself drifting away again, falling right back to sleep.

Kate ate slowly, observing the twins as they ate. It always made her smile, even if there will still a ways to go with them trusting her properly.

Dima seemed to be rather happy. She had a small smile on her face, her influence blanketing around the table. And then in my dream, this talking wolf approached me.

Wow. Talking. That's when you know its special.

Dima giggled as she got another bite of her plate of pancakes. Zeda rolled his eyes, stabbing down rather petulantly.

How are the pancakes today? And what did they do to offend you Zeda? Kate giggled.

"They're fine." He shoveled a bite into his mouth and stared at the table like it just insulted him somehow.

"Sure? Need more syrup?"

Zeda sighed. "They're. Fine."

Dima frowned slightly. Zeda? Are you okay?

"Fine."

"Sure darling? You can tell me any issue you have."

Zeda slammed his fork down. "I'm sure!" He glared at Kate.

Dima flinched back.

Kate grimaced.

Zeda held his glare for a moment before he started eating again.

"Are you okay?"

Zeda growled. "Why do you keep asking me?"

Kate raised her hands. "Sorry darling. Just wanted to see how you were doing."

Zeda rolled his eyes and stabbed his pancakes again.

Kate flinched. Dima went and grabbed her hand under the table. Kate gave her hand a small squeeze.

Zeda kept eating rather violently.

"Darling if there's anything wrong you know you can tell me."

"Stop asking!" Zeda turned to Kate so aggressively, his chair moved. Dima covered her ears, her frown deepening.

Kate fell silent. Dima lowered her hands. Don't talk to Kate like that. She's been nice to us. She doesn't deserve that.

"Its okay darling."

She shook her head. No, it isn't!

Kate sighed. "Its fine. I can handle it."

Zeda scoffed. "Yeah, Dima. Listen to Kate." He stabbed down hard enough, Kate was surprised the plate didn't chip.

Kate let out a soft sigh. "I'll do better."

Zeda rolled his eyes. Dima scowled. You don't need to do better. Zeda just needs to stop taking his fear-

Zeda turned around to face Dima now. "Stop it! Don't you dare!"

Kate scooted over to wrap an arm around Dima. "Please don't fight."

Zeda looked between Kate and Dima before flinching back like he had been struck. He slammed his hands against the table. "Fine. Since it's clear who's..." He looked like he had something more to say, but couldn't bring himself to say the words.

He stood up from the table.

"Darling-"

Zeda stormed off, not turning back for a second. Dima looked heartbroken.

Zeda! Zeda, please!

Kate give her a kiss. Do you want to go after him?"

It won't work. Dima sniffled, tears building up in her eyes.

Kate pulled her closer. Can you tell me why?

He's too far gone. In his own head.

Can we help him?

Dima shrugged helplessly. If he ever wants us to.

We have o try something.

Dima nodded. I just... I just don't know what...

We'll figure it out.

Dima nodded. We have to. For him.

For him.

Dima sat on the couch, fiddling with her hands. She felt awful, tears bubbling in her eyes.

Kate came and sat down next to her. Dima looked up at her. Zeda's been hiding in the closet.

Kate just opened her arms. Dima threw herself into Kate's arms, trying to hold herself together. Kate held her tight. We have to do something.

What? What can we do?

Let's try and first find out what exactly is troubling him.

Dima sniffled. He's scared of dying.

Kate held her closer. Oh. I. I should've realized.

How could you? He doesn't... say so. He just keeps it all inside his head.

I know. But Death was always something he seemed wary of. Right from the beginning.

He can't fathom the idea that he isn't... guilty. He thinks he should be tried for godly executed. That his soul should be... crushed.

That's... Its not a good way to feel.

Dima nodded. He won't listen me. He didn't... listen to you.

We'll find someone he will listen to.

Who would host his trial? Who is your Death?

My brother?

Dima froze. Your... your brother is death?

Mmm hmm. Darkness, Death and Cold. My family. Well sort of. There's more, but that's the immediate family.

Dima giggled. You're so cool, Kate.

Kate giggled. hank you.

Dima kissed her cheek. If Zeda hears it from Death, then hopefully... he'll finally be okay.

Good. Good. I can make that happen.

Dima nodded. How... how is your death?

A nerd.

Dima snorted, giggling.

Kate shrugged. It's true.

Dima giggled harder.

Kate pouted that time. Dima covered her mouth. What?

Kate shook her head. Nothing. Nothing.

Dima nodded. If you say so? She looked down shyly. Can I...?

Kate patted her lap. Hop on

Dima giggled and climbed into Kate's lap. Kate wrapped her arms around Dima. Dima rested her head against Kate's chest. Thank you, Kate.

You're Welcome Love.

Dima held up her hand, extending her pinkie. Promise me your brother will try to help, Zeda.

Kate wrapped her pinkie around Dima's. I promise.

Dima reached down to kiss Kate's pinkie. Good.

Kate shuddered a little. G.. good.

Dima giggled. Kate pulled her closer. Dima nestled in. I'll do my very best to help Zeda.

Thank you.

Jason let out a little sigh as yet another notification popped up from The Undead Router. At least it didn't look like anything he needed to go get involved in. That was a plus. The universe chose that moment to make his communicator ring out. Jason sighed and picked up.

"Hello!"

"Wow, so much enthusiasm."

"Kate."

"Mmm hmmm."

"Sorry. I didn't see it was you."

"You mean to tell me that you actually answer properly official calls with that tone?"

"Its my personal number Kate."

"Excuses. Excuses."

"Well given you haven't brought up the incident yet, it looks like you want something from me. Spit it out."

"I hate it when you do that."

"I know. That's why I do it."

Kate grumbled. "Well I need to come over here. Visit your sister every once in a while. Family things. You get the picture."

Jason chuckled. "Right. As if you've ever spent longer than ten hours in that place. I don't even know why you still pay the bills."

"Well things have changed of later, haven't they?"

"Right. The kids. How are they?"

"Not terrible. Somehow. I haven't screwed up too badly yet, but I do need your help with something."

"Fire away sis."

Kate went on for a solid half an hour and Jason was smiling widely at the end of it, even if the news wasn't the best in the world.

"Alright, alright. I'll come over to talk to him."

"Thank you. It would mean a lot. Its heartbreaking to see poor Zeda like this."

"Of course. I'll see you tomorrow then."

"See you tomorrow."

"You know Kate. I never thought I'd get to say this but..."

Jason could almost hear Kate roll her eyes. "What? Have I become soft? What's the joke?"

Jason chuckled again. "No silly. You. You make a good mother."

Kate seemed to sigh. "I'm just trying to give these goods a good life."

"You are. Bye."

"Bye."

xxxXXXxxx

Jason stepped through the front door. It had taken him a hot minute to remember how the thing even worked. Why had Kate managed to find the most annoying door in the world? It was like a puzzle.

A young girl with fluffy black hair sat on the couch, fidgeting with the hem with her dress.

Kate walked up soon. "Well aren't you going to give your favorite sister a hug?"

"No. No. You will not trap me with that."

Kate giggled. "Oh Peaches." She walked upto him and wrapped him in a hug.

"Thank you so much for doing this," she whispered. Jason nodded. "Of course." They separated and Jason turned to the girl.

"So who is this lovely young lady?"

"That's the wonderful Dima," said Kate walking over to the couch and offering Dima a hand." Jason resisted the urge to snap a picture of that. The pride in Kate's voice and eyes. Oh she was in deep with these kids.

Dima gave Jason a shy nod, her face completely blank. She took Kate's hand, smoothing out her dress as she stood. She seemed to stare at Kate for a little, completely silent.

Kate nodded with a smile as she looked back at Dima, not saying a word.

Dima turned back to Jason, taking a deep breath. Suddenly, there was a presence in his head, falling over his mind like velvet and then.

Hello?

Jason smiled at the presence. Hello! Its nice to finally meet you.

Dima slapped a hand over her mouth and nodded. And you as well.

I've heard a lot of things from Kate over there but well what would you say? Have you been doing well?

Dima looked up at Kate and then back at James. I've been doing well. Really.

Jason gave her a quick glance. She wasn't wrong. Physically she seemed in perfect health. Mental, it was. A work in progress. At least it was far better than Kate this close to her own meltdown.

I'm glad. Has Kate been treating you well?"

She nodded quickly. Kate is amazing. Really.

Kate turned away from them at that.

Is she now? Don't worry about her being here.

Dima nodded. She really is. She's been incredibly nice, and she's been trying so hard even when it hasn't been easy. And she called you here to help Zeda. So yes. Amazing.

Good. I'm glad your adjusting well then. My sister will be adequate for the moment then.

More than adequate. Dima crossed her arms.

Are you certain?

Dima nodded.

Very well then. Its time I met your brother.

Dima nodded. He's... he's been hiding...

I see. I heard that I could help him. May I go after him and try?

Dima nodded. Please. Help my brother.

I will. Give me a moment then.

Dima gestured for Jason to go on. Jason nodded, walking past them with a tap on Kate's shoulder. Kate didn't look up but Jason could've sworn she was trying to hide a few tears.

Jason tried not to comment on it. Yet. He walked into the house. Well this was going to take a moment. This house was far too big for its own good. Jason immediately rules out the top floor. Too open for a hiding place. It wouldn't make sense to hide on this floor either. He went to the entrance to the second floor, stepping through.

He looked about, trying to remember where the nearest enclosed space was. There weren't too many of those around here. Jason scouted through a few until at least, he came to one which had far too much heat within it to be empty. Unless Kate had some sort of unexpected guest, this was it.

A quiet sniffle sounded from the cabinet. Well that confirmed it. Jason carefully opened the door.

Zeda was in there alright. And he was terrified. His face was pale, his entire body trembling. He froze as the door opened, hiding in his knees.

"Hello!"

Zeda covered his ears, his breath speeding up. Jason could sense a lot of problem points on him. He didn't look to be in as good of a state as Dima had been in. He had scratches all up and down his arms, all in different states of bleeding. He was panicked and spiraling, all twisted up in self-loathing for too powerful for a child this young.

"Are you afraid of me?"

Zeda cried just a little harder at that.

"I'm Jason. Better known as Death. I'm here to talk to you. Can you do that?"

Zeda slammed himself against the wall, his fear skyrocketing. He curled into the tightest pull, shoving up his sleeves to scratch at his arms.

"I'm here to see if you're healing well. Nothing else."

Zeda to be a bit too far to hear him at this point, sobbing freely.

"Zeda? That's your name isn't it. Can you hear me?"

Zeda pressed his hands tighter over his ears.

"I'm not here to claim your soul or anything. I really am just here to see how you're healing."

That seemed to make Zeda pause. He was still crying, but he lowered his hands slightly. "You... you're not... going to kill me?"

"Of course not."

"But I... But I... killed... so, so many. Deserve. Deserve it. Deserve to die."

"That's not how that system works. It has to do with did you really want to kill. One can be guilty of wishing to kill hundreds, kill no one and still get punished. But if one never meant to kill, then one didn't."

"But they're still gone. I still... they're still..." Zeda shook his head, scratching his arms again.

"They will be fine."

"I... I destroyed... their afterlife..."

"You didn't. They'll simply be claimed by a neighboring universe."

"P-Promise? They'll... they'll be... okay?"

"They'll be fine. Well most of them well be. Judgement is still judgement. Those who deserve it will be okay, the rest will be... the rest."

Zeda started sobbing violently again, folding himself in the cabinet. "You don't deserve anything but a chance to heal and a bright future. I can guarantee that."

Zeda sobbed harder, his scratching slowing down. His poor arms...

"Can I join you in there?"

Zeda flinched, looking up a bit warily. He nodded slowly. Jason crawled inside, carefully patting Zeda on the shoulder.

"It'll be okay."

Zeda sniffled. "I promise you won't be hurt. Everyone here just wants you healed. Especially Kate. You know she's gotten quite attached to you."

Zeda flinched at that. "I... I ruined that..."

"I don't believe so."

"I yelled at her." Zeda wiped his eyes. "Why would she still... want me?"

"She loves you. Of course she wants you. She might not say it outright but she really cares for you and if anything seeing you suffering has made her more attached."

Zeda curled tighter. "I don't deserve her."

"You deserve a good future Zeda."

"I don't! Not when I stole everyone else's!"

"You do. You do. I promise. Kate will do her best. Or we'll find you a better home once you feel better."

"No. No. There's no better than Kate. I'm the problem. I'm wrong. I'm wrong."

"You're not. Believe me."

"How am I not?"

"You just need to heal. To feel better. It will take some time, but know that you're not at fault here and maybe that will help."

Zeda cries harder. "Who... who else do I have... to convince that?"

"Just me."

Zeda blinked. "No... no trial?"

"No trial."

"So... that's it?"

"Yes."

"I... get to... survive." He stared at the ground. "I get to survive."

"Yes you do."

Zeda let out a sob. "I won't leave Dima alone."

"You will not."

Zeda broke down sobbing again.

"May I hug you?"

He nodded.

Jason carefully pulled him into a hug.

Zeda hugged him tightly, still sobbing. "I get to live. I get to live."

Jason patted him on the back. "Yes you do."

"I didn't think... I just thought..."

"Its normal."

"Are you sure no one can override your decision? No council?"

"No one can."

"Never ever?"

"Never ever."

Zeda hugged Jason a little tighter. "Thank you. Thank you!"

"You're welcome Zeda."

Zeda pulled back. "I have to tell Dima."

"Go on then." Jason pulled away and got out.

Zeda froze. "She's... she's probably mad at me..."

"I doubt she is. She's only concerned for you."

He shook his head. "She... she was mad. I remember her being mad."

"I don't know about that, but when I came in she was only showing concern and care towards you."

Zeda shrank back. "And you're sure Kate's not mad?"

"Kate I can say with absolutely certainly isn't mad."

Zeda started to slowly creep out of the cabinet, hastily lowering his sleeves. Jason watched, not saying a word.

Zeda stood up. He was shorted than Dima. And all hunched over in anxiety, he looked even smaller. He was wearing a rather crumpled skirt that hung just above his knees.

"Want me to show you the way?"

He nodded wordlessly. Jason gestured for him to follow and walked back towards the main room. Zeda followed behind, almost hiding behind him. Jason walked a little slower than normal. Zeda didn't seem to notice. He looked like a dead man walking to Hell. Jason kept walking until they arrived in the main room.

Dima was sitting next to Kate, but as soon as she spotted Zeda, she practically launched to her feet. Zeda! She ran at top speed and tackled him to the floor in a hug. Jason walked over to Kate.

Dima raised slightly, cradling Zeda's face. Don't you dare do that again. If you do, I will die on the spot. You hear me? And then my ghost will drag you to join me because we promised each other we'd never leave each other.

Zeda laughed through building tears, putting his hands over Dima's. I'm sorry. I'm an idiot.

Jason hung by Kate. They just needed to exchange a glance for Kate to know it was alright.

"Thank you."

"Of course."

Maybe. But you're my idiot brother and you don't just get to disappear on me. You have the wrong sister for that.

He nodded. It won't happen again.

Good. I mean it. Neither of us will survive.

Zeda just shook his head fondly, holding her tighter.

Well then. I'll be leaving you three to it. My work here is done.

Dima turned around slightly. Thank you, Jason! You did amazing!

You're Welcome Dima.

Dima smiled. You should come back, Jason.

I will.

Dima nodded quickly and went back to fussing over Zeda.

Anything else either of you want from me?

Zeda shook his head. "Thank you. Jason. You did... so much."

Jason nodded with a small smile. Dima nodded, nuzzling into Zeda's chest.

I'll be going then. Toodles.

Both of the twins waved. Jason snapped his fingers and teleported away.

WeepingWisteria says...

Zeda crept the the doorway, scowling watching Dima and Kate interact. He wanted to see what all the fuss was about why Dima had been coming in so late. Kate was hugging Dima in her lap, telling her something. Dima looked to be giggling, clutching her stomach.

As he watched, Kate kissed Dima's forehead, also giggling. He frowned. It was selfish of him to expect Kate to act like that with him. But he wanted her to. He wished she would.

He cautiously stepped forward into the room.

Kate looked up. "Oh hello there Zeda."

Zeda swallowed nervously. "H-Hello."

Dima grinned and waved. Zeda!

"Want to join us?"

Zeda nodded slowly. "If... if you don't mind."

"Of course not."

Dima nodded and gestured for Zeda to join. He walked over slowly, settling on the couch.

"Want to come closer?"

Zeda nodded shyly. Kate lifted up her arm. Zeda slid in, pressing against her side. Kate put her arm around him. Zeda burrowed into her side. Kate brought him closer. "There you go. That's perfect."

It wasn't. Zeda couldn't explain why, but it wasn't. But he just nodded. "Yeah."

"Comfortable?"

He nodded. It was good enough. He squirmed slightly, trying to make it better.

"Want to get closer darling?"

"I don't see how I could."

Kate carefully scooted Dima over to the side, holding onto her with one arm. SHe patted her now free leg. "Come on."

Zeda blinked. "Are you... are sure...?"

"Yes. Come on."

Zeda slowly climbed into Kate's lap. He was in Kate's lap. He could hardly believe it. Kate hugged them both closer together. Dima hugged Zeda too. Now I can be with my two favorite people.

Zeda blinked. This was happening. For real. Wow.

It really is amazing isn't it?

Zeda nodded quickly.

Kate hugged them both a little bit tighter. Dima giggled, grinning.

You both are so adorable like this.

Zeda ducked his head against Dima's shoulder, shaking it quickly.

What's that darling?

Dima giggled. He's embarrassed.

Kate kissed him softly on the forehead. Aww darling.

Zeda froze. Kate. Kate just. Kiss. Forehead. He rubbed the spot, his eyes widening.

Was. Is. Is that okay?

He nodded slowly.

He's in awe give him a second.

Zeda shoved Dima. Stop!

Dima cackled, showing no ill effects of Zeda's shove.

You two are so cute like this. She kissed both of them and pulled them a little closer.

Zeda made a very dignified noise of disagreement and Dima viciously laughed at him again. Kate cuddled them closer again.

Zeda huffed and curled into her. Kate chuckled quietly.

"Why are you both laughing at me?" He hid his face, burrowing deeper into Kate.

"We're not laughing at you sweetie."

Dima giggled. I am.

Zeda went to punch her shoulder, but Dima easily blocked, cackling the whole time. I'm kidding. I'm kidding.

Kate giggled at the two of them. Zeda huffed. "After all of this. This is how you treat me."

"Oh how we've wronged you?" Kate kissed his forehead again. "Does that help sweetie?"

Zeda made a small noise. "I... I um..."

Dima hugged Zeda again. Maybe do it again.

Kate did it again. Zeda hid his face. "You'll both be the death of me."

"Will we now?"

"Yes."

"And do you like that arrangement?"

He huffed. "I don't want to die, thanks."

Kate kissed his forehead again. He huffed again. Dima patted his head. You're fine.

He is.

Zeda huffed. "You're both awful. I'm leaving."

You're not moving an inch.

"You are not."

"I'm leaving in my mind."

"No chance."

Zeda stuck out his tongue. Kate giggled. Dima poked his tongue. He reared back in offense. "Rude!"

Kate giggled louder. "Oh you two."

Dima giggled too.

"So cute."

Zeda flopped backwards, trying to land on the couch, but Kate's hug stopped him.

Kate's grip tightened. He pouted. "You ruined my dramatic death."

Kate giggled. "The horror."

"Yes, the horror!"

Kate giggled again.

Zeda huffed. Kate kissed his forehead again. He sighed. "I came here for a story and you're just bullying me."

"Aww. Do you want a story then darling?"

Zeda nodded slowly. "I... I hear you and Dima. Sometimes."

"Do you now?"

He nodded. "Just... laughing and snippets of you talking... and just..." He shrugged.

"Well then. Let's fix that. What sort of story do you want?"

Zeda's breath hitched. "I um... I don't know."

"How about a heist?"

Zeda nodded quickly. Dima grinned. Your heist stories are the best!

Kate grinned. Wonderful.

Zeda grinned. "Tell us."

"Alright. Well. So. Once upon a time."

Both of the twins giggled.

Kate winked. "Once upon a time, a moron met an idiot and they decided to make something very, very dangerous."

Zeda cackled, covering his mouth.

"The moron and the idiot hid this thing behind what one could call walls of paper."

Dima giggled this time.

"It was stolen, to no one's surprise except the five people who were paid to pretend to be surprised."

Both of the twins giggled then.

"And so... who did they call? Pop quiz time."

Dima gasped. Was it you?

"Correct. And here's your reward." Kate kissed her forehead.

Dima giggled.

Kate giggled along with her, taking a moment to have a straight face again. "And for two kisses now, the second question. How many people did I take with me? Was it A: 2 people, B: 4 people, C: 6 people, or D: 8 people.?"

Zeda frowned. "Was it... six?"

Kate kissed his forehead twice. "Correct again. Good job."

Zeda gasped. "I got it right?"

"You did!"

Dima clapped Zeda's shoulder.

"Alright, now do you want to know who they were."

Both of them nodded.

"Wonderful. Listen close then. There will be more pop quizzes this time."

Dima leaned over to Zeda like she was going to whisper in his ear. Pop quizzes always mean forehead kisses.

He frowned. "But what if you get the question wrong?"

"I get a kiss. A terrible torture I know. I apologize but it must be done."

Dima tapped her cheek. We have to give Kate a cheek kiss.

Kate nodded. Zeda nodded. "Okay. Continue with your story, Kate."

"Are you okay with it Zeda?"

He nodded. "Yeah."

"Alright then. We can begin."

The twins both nodded.

"Alright. So. There was Jennifer. I think you two know who that is now."

Zeda snapped his fingers. "That's your sister, right?"

"It is!"

Dima nodded. Above god of the cold.

Yup. She's the frosty one. In domain. She's actually very sweet.

Dima looked positively enamored. Zeda was sure he was doing... much better.

Kate grinned. "And there was also Vankous."

Dima nodded. The very childish sorcerer.

Kate giggled. Yes.

Dima looked awfully proud of herself.

Kate beamed. Two out of two now. I don't know if you two will know the other four that well.

Dima shrugged. Well, that just means we get to learn.

Yes you do. Alright. Next up is Larry.

Zeda shook his head. "Yeah... nothing from me..."

Dima?

She frowned. The name's familiar... She looked crushed. I'm sorry.

Kate pulled her a little closer. I only mentioned him once darling. He doesn't participate in this often. He...regrettably has a life outside of work.

Dima sighed. Still. Should've remembered.

No. No. It happens. Even we forget he exists sometime. Kate made a loud sushing sound. Don't tell him that.

Dima smiled and held out her pinkie. I promise.

Kate twirled her pinkie with Dima's. Thank you sweetie.

Dima giggled and leaned down to kiss Kate's pinkie. Kate giggled. Dima grinned.

"Alright. Ready to learn about him then?"

Both of the twins nodded.

"Well his name is Soundwave. Can you guess what he does what he does from that?"

Zeda frowned. "Makes sound waves that hurt?"

"Correct."

Dima nodded. Good job, Zeda!

Good job! Zeda's face warmed up.

"Want to guess some more or should I reveal it?"

"Reveal!"

"Okay then."

The twins leaned in closer.

"Larry, or Laurence Galahad Anderson Daniel Harrison is a former genera before he joined this side of things. He was actually created by a gene mod program. And yes in addition to generally being very hard to kill his main power lies in sound. Very loud, very powerful sound."

Zeda and Dima just stated in awe, Dima nodding occasionally.

"That's our boy Larry. We call him..." Kate stifled a laugh. "Boom box."

Zeda snorted.

"Don't tell anyone but I came up with it. Everyone currently suspects Vankous."

Dima gasped scandalously, playfully slapping Kate's shoulder. Kate!

"I know. I'm so evil."

Zeda huffed. "You are!"

"I beg for mercy.:

Zeda presented his forehead. "Earn it."

Kate gave him a soft kiss. He smiled. "Thank you."

"Of course sweetie."

Dima nodded. more story. Who else?

Well next up is James. Do you remember him?"

Dima nodded again. He's human, [\i]

[i]He is!

She grinned proudly.

Good job!

Dima giggled.

You are doing so well. Going to get so many kisses.

Dima giggled harder, covering her mouth.

"Next part?"

Both of the twins nodded.

"And for person number five. Another familiar face. Jason."

"My hero," Zeda whispered.

"He was my hero too growing up."

Zeda flushed. "Yeah."

Dima hugged Zeda. Our hero. If he helped you so much, he's our hero.

"He is our hero."

Zeda groaned. "I regret uttering that statement."

Kate giggled and kissed his forehead. He scowled. "That is making it slightly better."

Kate kissed his forehead again. He nodded. "Very well.

"Thank you for forgiving me o' great Zeda."

"Don't get used to it."

Dima winked.

Kate giggled. "Of course milord."

Zeda blinked. "Never been called that..."

"Do...do you not like it?"

"No. It's nice. It's... silly, almost?"

"In a way."

"It's fun. I like it."

"I'll keep using it then."

Zeda nodded. "Okay."

"Alright then. Do you remember how many more people are left?"

Zeda hummed. "Do you include yourself in the six people you took?"

"I do not."

Dima held up one finger. Then just one.

Zeda scoffed. "You stole my declaration!"

Too slow.

Kate giggled. One it is. Sorry Zeda. You have to be faster.

Zeda pouted. "That's not fair. I asked a question!"

And it gave me time to answer faster.

Stiff competition darling.

Zeda shook his head. "Rude."

Dima just turned back to Kate. Next person.

"Well last of all is Quantax."

Dima frowned. I... that's two people. I don't know.

I've never talked of him before sweetie.

Promise? You're not just saying that?

Promise.

Dima nodded. Then introduce him.

Okay. ANy guesses?"

Both of the twins slowly shook their head.

Quantax also konwn as... Sean.

"Larry. James. Sean. Most of you stick to very common names."

"Its easier."

Zeda shrugged. "I suppose."

"Its how things go."

He nodded.

"So keeping up so far."

Both of the twins nodded. "Sean."

Quantax.

"Yes."

Keep going.

"So he's one of our teleportation specialists."

Zeda grinned. "How far can he travel?"

"Pretty far. I don't know if he has a limit besides needing to visualize locations."

"So, like us, then."

Dima frowned. We haven't tried teleporting here. We don't know if we can.

"That's just because we don't know where anything is."

"Tell me before you teleport away from this old lady."

"We'd tell you. Besides, you'd know. Every god has a teleporation noise."

Except Raz.

"Yeah, well Raz is Raz."

"That will be a sad day but I'll remember."

Dima pouted. We'd come back! We're not just going to abandon you.

Zeda nodded. "What do you take us for?"

"Ohh. .ohh." Kate broke into a beaming smile. "Amazing "

"Amazing we'd come back? Or did you finally realize how amazing we are for being able to teleport?"

Dima shoved him. Shut up, Zeda.

Kate giggled and pulled them closer. "I'm sorry. I may have gone and gotten a bit attached to yoj two."

"Well, no one's... done that before so... congratulations on being the first?" He shrugged.

Dima got a sad, faraway look on her face. Like she was considering a different time. Back when they both thought they had found someone to befriend.

Dima, are you okay?

She blinked, shaking her head slightly. Fine. Sorry. Got... distracted.

Kate kissed her forehead. Dima smiled, but?" it was smaller, sadder. Zeda hurt too, then. Because he knew exactly who she was thinking about.

Anything to talk about?

"It's just me. Something... I did. It's fine."

"Really?"

Dima sighed. No. We talked about this, Zeda. You can't just do that. Take all the blame. It's not just you.

"It was. It was just me. You followed my lead."

"I don't know what happened sweetie, but I'm sure you can't be the only one to blame."

Zeda shook his head. "Trust me. I was."

He... he broke into our home, Zeda. Told you he planted a bomb in... She glanced at Kate and looked back. Stop taking all of the blame. Maybe we made the wrong decision. Maybe... maybe we made a mistake. But then it was ours.

Kate pulled them both closer. That hardly sounds like you alone were to blame Zeda.

"You don't know the full story. I..." He shook his head.

"Well we have all day."

"No." Zeda shook his head. "You... you... you don't want to know. Please. I just... I just got you."

"Hmm?"

Zeda shook his head. "No. I can't tell you. You can't know. Because then you'll hate us."

"I'm sure there's no way something that extreme can come about."

"You can't say that."

"I believe you two wouldn't do anything horrible unless there was some very good reasoning behind it."

Dima hesitated then. That's debatable.

Well I believe in you two.

"Believe in Dima. Not me."

"I believe in both of you."

"You shouldn't!" Zeda shook his head. "Because I lost control. I lost my head. I let him get under my skin and I..." He shook his head.

"It happens sweetie."

"It doesn't just happen."

"No. People force your hand. But its very rarely your own fault."

"It's mine. It's mine. I should've... I should've been better. Done something more."

Dima reached forward to cup his face. Done what?

"Not believed him. Realized sooner that I was just... his pawn."

"That hardly sounds like a situation where you were in the wrong. If anything it sounds like someone did something horrible to you."

"I..." He sniffled. "I wanted him to hurt. So I made him."

"Did he hurt you or someone who you cared about?"

Zeda looked at the floor. "That... it didn't make a difference."

"Hmm?"

"It was still... wrong. I was still disgusting for... falling for his tricks."

Dima grabbed his head, holding it to her chest as she covered his mouth. Kate. Is it reasonable to panic if a known torturer and local homicidal... god breaks into your house and tells you he planted a bomb in your best friend's truck?

Zeda struggled against Dima. Let me go!

"That happened to poor Zeda? Oh my. That's. Of course its reasonable to panic." Kate pulled Zeda closer and kissed his hair. "Oh my goodness sweetie. Did that happen to you darling?"

Dima finally released his mouth. Zeda growled quietly. "It wasn't... it just..." He sighed. "Yes. It did."

"Come here sweetie. That's horrible. Forget snapping, I'm just glad you weren't seriously harmed."

"He didn't want to hurt me. That was his goal. To make me snap so that I could... finally be the disgusting thing I was always made to be."

Dima smacked the back of his head. No. No one talks about my brother like that.

"Oh sweetie, no no, that's horrible. You're definitely not responsible for something a manipulative moron did. Come here." Kate pulled both of them closer. "Are you okay? I'm sorry I made you remember that. You will hardly lose me because of something a jerk forced you to do."

"He didn't force me. I fell for it. It's my fault."

"No its not. You don't "fall" for some bastard trying to manipulate you into becoming angry, especically not someone as young as you. Its that idiots fault through and through."

"I should've known better. I should've... I should've..."

"You being here alive despite whatever torture that madman put you through means you did your best."

"He can't kill me."

"But clearly he did some horrible things to you."

Zeda sniffled. "I... It's still my fault."

"Not its not."

Zeda sighed. "Fine."

Dima grinned and hugged him closer. Good job!

Kate pulled them both closer. "Yes."

"I..." He scowled. "I just... He won. He wanted control over me, and he won."

"He tricked you and he hurt you."

"I'm a soldier. That's a part of the life."

"Well not anymore. Those things hurt us and when it happens you come to me because I want to make that hurt go away."

Zeda sighed. "You're... so special, Kate. I don't think you realize."

Kate shrugged. "I'm only doing what any decent person would do."

"Then you're the first decent person we've met."

Dima frowned. Zeda-

"What, Dima? Who else has stuck around this long? In these circumstances?"

She fell silent.

"That can't be true."

Zeda snorted. "Want to test us? Go ahead."

"Fine. I don't really want to bring up any of your earlier memories. I just want to make both of you feel as safe and...." Kate's voice dropped to barely a whisper. "...loved as possible."

Dima made a very undignified squeak, her eyes blowing wide. Zeda could feel her presence racing, spinning around in circles. You. Love. What?

Loved. Love. I want you to feel safe and loved. I. I love you both.

Dima looked starstruck. Zeda...

Zeda felt small. How could... how could Kate love him? Him?

Kate pulled them both closer and kissed each of their foreheads. Zeda just fell limp against her, frowing. Dima curled tightly into her, her presence buzzing.

Kate held both of them tighter.
