Roland had curled up by now and was half-asleep. Bug was pacing near the other side of camp from Rhys, and Shingles was circling at a distance.

She found it hard to sleep at first, but eventually relaxed knowing that if they would have been dangerous they would have shown it already. At least being killed in one's sleep wasn't the absolute worst way to go anyhow.

And then it was quiet, except for the wind blowing the dust over the plains then eventually down into the ravine from where they'd come before. In a few hours Rhys would wake up briefly, and look around in the almost total darkness.

Shingles gave her the creeps. But at least he wasn't hostile towards them. She rested her head back on the hard ground and drifted off again, but would wake up often if there was a noise. Used to sleeping by herself meant almost literally sleeping with an eye open.

None of the three non-humans slept at all. Roland tossed and turned occasionally, shuddering and whimpering in his sleep.
