Rana brightened at that and nodded, smiling a little. “Yes. I was very lucky to have wonderful attendants.”

"Are there any that stood out to you?" Ewan asked curiously. "Did they have to split their time with you for other duties or was your care their primary job?"

“It depended.” Rana shrugged. “When I was very little I had a flock of Nannies that rotated amongst all the children full time. Once I got a little older Itani was assigned as my nearly full time playmate. She was a little older than me so she could help me get dressed and make sure I stay on track with things but young enough we could be friends as well.”

“Still in the East,” Rana said. “Father said it wouldn’t be proper to bring her along so she’s temporarily helping out with the little kids while we’re away.”

"Ah, that's unfortunate." He frowned. "Will you write to her while you're here?"

(Would the ravens go as far East as they live? I assumed it'd be like human messengers?)

“Probably not.” Rana shook her head, glancing down the hall as if she expected her father to round the corner at any moment. She did her best not to let him see how much she cared about Itani, so she couldn’t be used to punish her.

"Ah." He followed her gaze, brow furrowed. She seemed nervous about something, but he had no idea what. "Well, I hope you're reignited soon! Do you think she would have liked the North?"

"Probably not." She shook her head, glancing back at him. "I-I mean, maybe. She probably would have liked it up here in general. She's just very anxious around nobles she doesn't know and I don't think she's ever been anywhere this cold. I think it would have been more stressful than anything for her to try to learn how to navigate such a different culture from our own, especially since she doesn't speak any Northern."

"Fair enough." He hadn't thought of it that way. "Living in different climates and cultures than what one is used to can certainly be difficult and strange. I loved how temperate the East is, but the customs are...strange, sometimes."
