so im writing this novella, and the four main characters are based on me and three friends - one being my ex - and the plot is going every which way after the 13th chapter (but thats another issue in itself). so far five chapters are up in the adventure section. i've found that the characters' tones keeps changing based on how that person is acting towards me that given day. is this terribly confusing, or as long as I keep it under control would this just make the characters more believable?

I think you need to have some sort of sameness in your characters: otherwise, people will be so confused. Mainly because real life is complicated, and unless your readers are your best friends, they wouldn't understand. Secondly, if your friends read the book and you made them look bad because of some stupid issue that day, it won't be very popular, and since you and your friends are inspiration for the book, I'm guessing they're going to read it.
"Son, what do you want to be when you grow up?"
"A felon!"
"Are you sure?"
"Yah! This kid at school says they get all the girls!"
"I should try that..."
