Wooden - you can't beat the traditional way of doing it. And if you get one of those sharpeners that hold the sharpenings in them, you don't have to get up all the time.
My mechanical ones always broke on me and I always lost my little bottle of lead.
There was this time I used only (only!) mechanical pencils. I had this adorable silver-and-blue one. Then it broke. I was so sad. I bought a new one. It lasted about two months. Then it broke. I was so sad. I couldn't find a similar one, so I gave up.
And now I use wooden ones.

Wooden. They are better to doodle with, the leads are usually better quality if you get the ones I do ^^
Plus I do Art class, so I have wooden pencils for that which I use. Though admittedly I do 99% of my school notes in a good ol' biro :p
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.
I've never had a problem with my mechanical pencils squeaking, and not breaking too often. I hate having to sharpen pencils, which I have to do constantly if I'm using wood because I can't stand when the writing starts to get thick and faint; I need thin, bold writing.
Though in general, ditto Cade. Pens all the way. I only use pencils because I have to for a lot of my homework. Bleagh.
