LOS ANGELES - Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television. Some People Are Stupid. Stuff. People I Can Do Without. George Carlin, who died of heart failure Sunday at 71, leaves behind not only a series of memorable routines, but a legal legacy: His most celebrated monologue, a frantic, informed riff on those infamous seven words, led to a Supreme Court decision on broadcasting offensive language.

The counterculture hero's jokes also targeted things such as misplaced shame, religious hypocrisy and linguistic quirks why, he once asked, do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?

Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, went into St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica on Sunday afternoon complaining of chest pain and died later that evening, said his publicist, Jeff Abraham. He had performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas.

"He was a genius and I will miss him dearly," Jack Burns, who was the other half of a comedy duo with Carlin in the early 1960s, told The Associated Press.

Full Story

It's not... terribly shocking, but I'm still shocked. He was my second favourite comedian and he was a brilliant, brilliant man. I remember my parents playing one of his tapes when I was younger and telling me to listen to my iPod so I wouldn't hear the foul language. But I just put the headphones in and listened, but I couldn't suppress my laughter.

I'm gonna miss the old coot.

I now no longer know who the funniest man alive is. It was always George Carlin.

It's also a nostalgia thing with me. I grew up listening to George Carlin because of my dad. His comedy is more familiar to me than anyone else's.

I'm truly saddened. My favorite athiest... now he knows what's waiting for us, rather nothingness or what, and someday I'll find out too.

Oh, man. I heard that news on the radio when I was driving in to work that morning, and it destroyed my productivity the whole day. I mean, it's George Carlin. Not like I knew him or anything, but I still felt sad. *sigh* And the news was going on and on about his "Seven Words You Can't Say on TV" bit as if he'd never done anything else. *rolls eyes* Rest in peace, George Carlin.
Frylock, please, no books! I can't read; I'm not a loser!

Seriously, Professor Rabbit! They mention "Seven Words" again and again, but I thought that was mildly okay compared to the rest of his genius. How about commend his entire comedy career as just being SHEER BRILLIANCE?

I'm currently reading Napalm & Silly Putty. His books are beautiful things :D

I just bought his "career" in a nifty DVD bundle.
