well everyones covered mine but one thing I always do is to pick names that has a meaning related to the character and also popular in the year the character was born. Also, I like to keep a note pad beside my bed with a pen. Its great for when you have an inspiring dream.

Write the truest sentence you know, you will know it when you are true. 8. Distrust adjectives. 9. Know what to leave out. 10. Write the tip of the ice-berg, leave the rest under water.

Don't ignore good characters. I'm working on a novella, and the topic and plot are sort of cliche, but I really love the characters, and it's turning out beautifully.
If you want to get some new material or opinions, turn on some random music (preferably without lyrics) and write whatever the song makes you think of.

Write parts that you know. Don't spend hours finding out what you want to happen in the spaces of what you don't know. Then leave it for a couple of days, weeks, months or even years if you want! This is what I do when I write. Hope this helps.
There are some stories that have perfectly good plots but are ruined when all they say is "This happened." A good story shouldn't have to explain itself to the reader, and it should only confuse him or her when it needs to, not as a way to make the reader it's toy.
