No Chat-Speak

Rule #7 of YWS:
This is a writers forum, and thus "netspeak" or "1337" is simply not allowed.


The Young Writers Society is a writing site, and chat speak is not allowed here. Repeated violations can get you banned from the site.

Hallelujah! I'm glad it's beginning to get more strict. If only we could make proper punctuation and grammar a rule too.

No! Because some of us aren't so talented in grammar and punctuation!

Aye, we can't make a rule about grammar and punctuation if only because it's often open to interpretation. However, a failure to use apostrophes in contractions is considered chat-speak.

Woah...I didn't know that! It is a good thing that you told me!

Completely didn't know about the no apostrophe thing. I'll have to watch that now.

Well, I like this whole getting stricter thing. We do have standards, and it's good to see that they're being upheld.

Oh, good! That should ensure that more people stick to the rule. Sad, that you actually have to make people stop using it, for they should see that no one is going to take them serious as a writer, if they don't follow the basic rules of writing.

Anyway, good plan.

I was tempted to write some smartypants response in chat-speak, but I like you too much, Nate (err, Lee), and also I couldn't bring myself to do it.

I'm terrible at reading 'chat speak'. I stare at the screen for five minutes going: What?
And scratching my head.

Whenever possibly, I use proper spelling, punctuation and grammar, but the occasional slip here and there never does you wrong.. does it?

I am sure they are a little forgiving for accidental typo/misspellings are ok, and like Lee said, punctuation is generally pretty open. However if you write something the length of three paragraphs and there is no period to be seen, that may be a problem. Everyone has slips ups.

But things like "u" for "you" or "r" for "our"/"are" are unacceptable.

So far as I know things like lol are still allowed. Unless now we need to actually type *laughing out loud*

If there was a law passed that we had to have "proper grammar," that wouldn't be fair. For instance, some people spell "color" as "coulor." How would we know which was proper or not?

I agree with Midnight Vampire. Chatspeak is hard to understand. Are smilies still allowed?
