Notes on colouring Nyra:
1. I painted the shading first. Not just black and white, but a full range of the shading colours. Note that colours get less saturated as they get more light on them. And always go from dark to light when it comes to shading.
2. Don't ever put your shading layer above your colours and make that the "Overlay/Softlight" layer. Instead, make the colouring Soft Light. Not Overlay, Soft light.
3. And the Mixer brush, set so the brush doesn't auto-fill its colours or clean off. Next, set the "Wetness" to 100. Then set the "Mixing" to 100. Load no longer matters as you mix all your shading into smooth fur, soft skin shading, and even simply mixing colours. Put it into any brush shape you want, and voila! Save it, and it'll be your go-to mixer forever. (Just a hint.)
4. Draw a sketch first. ALWAYS.
5. After you do that, grab your "DP Presets" Presets and find "DP smooth." Once you do, take the Transfer off it in the brush settings, and set your colour to something neon bright. (Preferably green.) Now only trace the outline of your sketch. Then you select the outside of it and invert the selection. Create a new layer and fill it with 50% gray.
6. Put a clipping mask for the layer above the grey layer, which will be called the Base.
7. Now work with everything you need inside that clipping mask. Nothing will go out of the Base's predetermined outline. Be sure to lock the Base so you don't screw anything up. (Note, this happens all before you start with the shading.)

Okay. The technical stuff is done, here's some notes on the actual content.

1. Nyra, in reality, is dark and spotted. She is described as beautiful all throughout the first six books, and amongst Barn owls, the darker and spottier the females are, the more beautiful.
2. Oh Crud. I forgot to draw the spots.
3. This one's a bit of a *Spoiler.* Coryn's Angst about his "Ma being a Hagsfiend" is partly true. She isn't a full-blown hagsfiend until the final battle in War of the Ember, where she dramatically turns into one and kills Coryn. (Finally, the Gary Stu Dies.) Well, anyways, this is her during book 15, where her feathers are ragged and she has the yellow eyes. Not to mention that I made her scruffy like a real live crow. Note that It was really darn hard to draw the feathers as long as they were.
4. The scar on her face. Owls... they do not have 1 talon, leaving a perfectly clean mark on an owl. Right? They have four, and two would have certainly made quite the gash on Nyra's face. But... After 10 years, it's safe to say that the feathers are gone there, but the scar's thinned up quite a bit.
5. The knives in her talons. Nyra had other weapons that Kludd's battle claws and helm at some point in her life. So, I created some fancy-schmancy Tandrai-esque blades for her.
