Everyone knows it, its a concept that particles don't exist as a single state, rather until observed they exist in all possible states. To simplify this, as well as mock the concept he gave this example with a cat. That the cat is both alive or dead until we open the box, because until the particle in question is observed the trap to kill the cat exist in all possible states, thus the cat exist in all possible states, meaning as to if the cat is alive or not is unknown. He did this at the request of many people, but at the same time. He was making fun of it. He considered the concept ludicrous, thus the use of a cat as a means to point out that existence itself is observing the particles, that regardless of individual awareness these possibilities are not in all possible states, only the one the only means there is of even reaching the conditions needed for this all possibilities thing would require isolating the particle, and even in that state technically something would be around to keep it in one state. In this example, the cat itself. To his shame, nobody seemed to realize this, and the concept became even more popular.
