Most of you he knew me a long while might have had an inkling of this, but I am a furry. I am creating this thread to bring awareness to eat for the possibly younger generations who heard of it but don't know what it is, maybe shed some light on misconceptions people might have on it, and to bring awareness of it on YWS. Feel free to ask me anything. I will be typing out a full post on What a furry is, but feel free to use this to ask your questions and I will include them in the post. Furries do not judge other people for their lifestyle and open to almost anything, so please do not judge us.

The discription put up by wikipedia.org on furry is: "The furry fandom is a subculture interested in fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics. Examples of anthropomorphic attributes include exhibiting human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walk on two legs, and wear clothes. Furry fandom is also used to refer to the community of people who gather on the Internet and at conventions."
While that description is technically accurate, it is just a general view of what a furry is. For some, like me, it is closer to a lifestyle and it helps me define my thoughts in daily life. A person who is interest into the fandom, tends to create their own furry persona, also known as a fursona, which usually represents what they feel they look like. Furries also known for a wide culture of art where people either draw or pay people who are furry artists to draw their fursonas into a viewable sense. There is also a group of furries out there who also take the art a step further and make suits that look like their view of their fursona. These suits are known as fursuits.
Because we are greatly different any many peoples views with being furry, especially those of us that wear the fursuits, we tend to be shunned and ridiculed by some for how we wish to live our lives. Not all reaction to us is bad though and people seem to not mind us at all. Best example I can give is my recent visit to Olde Market in Omaha, NE. There we had several people in fursuits and the reactions went from being called freaks and weirdos, to lots of weird stares as we passed by, to people wanting get our pictures with them, and on occasional person yelling "Furry Pride!". Because we are used to the hate and dislike in general, most furries are not judgemental and do not harbor hate for groups (except for Wesboro, but who really likes them).
I know my description is general and there might be much you're confused on and I tried my best to describe a broad subject. Feel free to ask any questions you have I am open to all especially you are looking to join us. If you are one of the people who hate furries, I ask you keep your opinion to yourself, or else I will report you and have your comments deleted.

I have a friend or facebook who is a furry. I've never really KNOWN about the lifestyle but I kind of like it from what I got from your description. I think its kind of adorable seeing the suits and I'd totally be asking to take pics lol!
But hey each person has a life style the fit into. No two are the same so I say ROCK ON FURRY FRIEND!!!
One thing I don't understand. Do Furries think that their fursona is... real? Like, a soul, or their real being? Like how transgenders may think they are of the opposite gender on the inside, and were just born with the physical wrong gender? Is it similar to that? Or is it just a hobby? I know you said it was a lifestyle and it helped you "define your thoughts." Could you explain that? How the lifestyle of a furry can change the way you think? Also, do you act like... animals... or...?

Some people, specially those who are paganistic in their beliefs, feel like they have a deeper connection to their fursona, a totem if you will. So while, they know the physical manifestation of their furry is never possible, the animal, (or in the case of people who choose hybrids) animals, represent them in a way. I'm sure if it were physically possible to turn furry, most of would take the chance to not be human.
It's hard to say how being a furry define your thoughts is that every single one of us is different in our own way. I guess the way I see it, is like animals, we are open (yes there are outliers, but the general community is accepting). No matter what your religion, your race or skin color, what language you speak, your sexual orientation, or a thousand other factors, you will usual find acceptance with furries. My best example of this would be that we have a guy in my local group who is annoying, he bugs us, but we tolerate hum because he is who he is. He doesn't mean harm and he's seriously trying to change, so for now we accept him and let him come with us instead of shunning him from the group. We all are unique in our own ways, what personalities we choose to take from our fursona is up to us.
As far as acting like, it varies. I know people who's fursona is a cat and they can purr and wolf furries who will growl. It all depends on the person.
