Well, my idea was that it varies from Darkling to Darkling. One might be gifted in healing, another gifted in combat, and another gifted in illusion. Most would have multiple gifts. If called on another purpose such as a guardian, you would gain the gifts of a guardian.
Their soul purpose is to protect; with their lives if necessary. The one thing they've been guarding since the beginning of time is the Sacred Grove. Within it lies the source of all knowledge and power.
Well, that's up to you. The main reason Shade was concerned was because she thought the King would try to use the Darklings to find this grove; If he were to unlock its power, he would be unstoppable.
However, there are mixed opinions among the Darklings on whether or not the grove should be used.
Cool. I'm thinking at least some of the Darklings might have been raised by humans like my girl, isolated and homeschooled of course. What do you think? Also, I'm planning on Willow trying to stay awake for as long as she can, maybe a day or two. She's actually pretty frightened about getting the brand. Everybody have little plot bunnies hopping about in their head?
