this activity is about constructing a piece that is "about" an abstract idea, but to write about it entirely by example, showing us, not telling us, using concrete terms throughout.

EG: show us happiness, or submission, or anger, but without mentioning the abstract at all.

Don't tell us what the abstract noun/idea is, don't title the piece with it, but let us guess what we think it is, when your first draft is posted.

Any other ideas are fine of course

I'll just post it here!

The sun shone. The flowers bloomed beautifully. The light shone from across the meadow. Everything is subtle. Everything is asleep.

My turn.

Standing in the living room of the house I have polished from top to bottom in anticipation of your arrival, my heart is fit to burst. I wipe my sweaty hands and try to calm my breathing to slow my heart. I have painted your old bedroom blue again and bought a spiderman spread for the bed, where I have placed the gift I wrapped. The card reads, 'from Granny' - I hope he'll like it as you would have done at that age. I hope he'll like me. In all his seven years, we've never met.
Opening the door I see immediately, you are alone. I smile and nod at the explanation of why it was not possible to bring him with you to back to England this time. I say I understand and while you go upstairs to wash and change after your long flight, I take myself to the garden shed. I'll need a moment to compose myself, splash my face at the kitchen sink and dry my eyes. I'll get over it; I'll have to. I guess I let my expectations fly too high.

Silence in the windows
and the eyes
of the soul.

Mentioned only once
by voices of the few
behind closed doors

Dark and hollow places
to cross.

I think I have thankfully avoided being quoted.
