Event Two: Dictionary Conundrums

There are a lot of words in the dictionary. Your task is to create a new one and sell it to me. This can be in the form of a letter to the council or any other 'higher authority' (who would you write to?) or as a sale's pitch, dragon's den style or otherwise. It may be from yourself or you may decide to adopt a persona, the choice is up to you. Be as serious or as ridiculous as you would like! The word limit is 350 words and the title of the piece (not included in the word limit) should be the new word you have created.

To whom it may concern,

It has come to my attention that there is a gap in the market for a new word. A very important word! Have you ever passed a bakery or gone downstairs into your own kitchen and smelled that delightful scent of bread baking? I sure have, used to work for a bakery in fact, Thompsons. Finest bread you'll ever get. My point is, there's no word for that and do you know how many brain cells I've killed, thinking to myself, that there is the smell of bread baking? Zillions! Would it not be so much easier to think, ah, that breadoma! You'd be thanked by people all across the world! Just think, the ink that could be saved from using breadoma in novels, newspapers, persuasive letters to the council. I await the next edition of the dictionary with great excitement!

Indeviaque

Dear Sir/Madam,

It has come to my attention the situation of those who are unable to be who they are due to the restraints of the society . People sought after talents simply based on excellent academic results.

In a workplace, does academic results really mean everything? Sure, what we learn in schools are the basic applications of mathematics, as well as languages that would tide us through our working life.

Though is learning things that would have little or no part in the future we wish for making full use of our time? My issue here is to promote a word that will be used from now on to remove such restrains on the people who have talent in other fields and not only in the academic field.

I introduce you to the word ‘Indeviaque’. ‘Indeviaque’ can be broken into 3 parts. “Inde” stands for the Identity of oneself, “via” means through and “que” represents Uniqueness. Thus, this word means “Identity of oneself through uniqueness”

With this new word, ‘Indeviaque’ will be able to let those who are restrained by the society’s demands for the academic results to be the judge on the future of the later generations to be able to pursue their own dreams.

Thus, the idealism of indeviaque.

Dear Webster's,
I believe that you have received my previous letters about the zombies kept on your payroll. Today, however; I must bring another travesty to your attention.
Subgeothermaldom. 
Somehow, this word has been left out of your dictionary. Now, seeing as my letters somehow always make their way down to the incinerator (the zombies are at fault, no doubt), I will give the breakdown of this wondrous word to whatever high-school burn out is reading this (no offense).

Sub-- meaning under of beneath.
Geo-- ground or land
-thermal- meaning heat
-dom- meaning a realm or quality

The meaning of this word, of course, means the realm of the underground volcano kings. Are you aware that 32% of all Martains are not aware of the existance of the volcano kings? Don't even get me started on the average American. This can under no circumstances be allowed to continue. This lack of knowledge is one of the reasons the Central Intelligence Agency is able to read our minds so easily. They're practically empty!
Now, as you have been properly educated in the English language, please make sure this letter gets to your superiors, preferably not a member of the undead. I expect to see this in your next edition.

To my good friends,

As a fellow fine appreciator of words, it has come to my attention that as wondrous and vast of words that our dictionaries provide us with, we may be lacking in several. Of course, we've single words that describe the smell of rain or being full of beer, or someone who does not laugh, or to malinger. But still we lack in words!

I present to you with the issue at hand that troubles me so. We've not a word for something as simple as describing merely, "a bright star" or "pertaining to a bright star". Thus, I give you the word: lumiustellar, as an adjective or simply as a noun (while as what I imagine to be used less as) if you will.

My friends, you must understand as why I felt to the need to come up with a word to describe such a way. You and I both know that it is not the singular word that makes a great word, that all words are magnificent in their own way. However, how simple would it be if we could describe such in an easier fashion; something to bring to the tops of our heads and not stumble for the correct one(s) to settle on?

Most are fine with the notion of simply saying, "a bright star" or "like a bright star". I wish to only find the correct description, fitting to roll off the tongue and be used as convenience allows. Is it not the curious way of using our words for both communication and speech that had our people developing a language? The English language is a curious thing indeed, and I only hope to expand our possibilities of choices, for there is no word that can be useless when used properly.

Lumiustellar, "lumi" as from 'bright' and 'stellar' as from star. Alternatively, lumiustellarous. A simple word with a simple definition.

I humbly ask that you may acknowledge lumiustellar, my fellow word appreciators.

Loke

Dear Editor,

I propose the addition of the word loke to the next edition of all dictionaries, as well as its immediate entry into everyday speech. Loke means simply, “A strong like or a mild love, especially for an object or animal.” Loke, then, would be an expression of appreciation for something that is between like and love.

If a person likes something very strongly, let’s say chocolate for example, they will often say they love chocolate. However, that is not completely correct. When a person loves their mother, they would die for her and do anything for her. They would not die for chocolate. But there is simply no word to express that they really like chocolate without taking it all the way and saying they love it, like they love their mother or their baby sister. The word loke will be a convenient half-way point.

I believe it is necessary to add this word to the English language to avoid any more confusion when people use the word love incorrectly. It will be simple to remember for even your youngest readers: if you want to say you love something that isn’t a person, use loke instead! For example, “I loke you, puppy,” and “Pizza is my favourite food. I loke it!”

In conclusion, I encourage any reader of this newspaper, especially those in the business of making dictionaries, to consider adding loke to their vocabulary, as it is a very useful word.

Dear Heather ,

Today they were talking about you. They always talk about you. They ignore me, they treat me like a child, like I'm not there. I'm not a child.They talk about both of us like were not there. Your not there but I am. I hear and listen to a lot more things than they think. I am not a child. From everything I've been through it proves it. From dealing with your pitiful excuse of a husband. They know I am old enough to choose things. They listen when I speak. They listen and not just hear but listen. Mom doesn't listen. They tell me constantly that this is all your fault. It's almost like at this point she is glorifying your husband over you. I don't believe it. It's a lie I know it. They don't know anything. They don't know how much it hurts me to hear them talk about you, talk about how your mentally unstable, how your a physiological liar, how you used me and have been using me all this time. I won't listen to it. It's all a lie. I am not a child. I am not swayed to different directions because of what people say. I know you. I know your my sister. I can't see you using me... We vented to each other. They are all lying and I won't believe it. I am not a child.

There should be a word to discribe what people think of you, because of your actions most of us think it would be better if you were dead. I hope you're alive and you know me and trust me. Nexvita, thats the word I think fits. It means death and life. You are somewhere in the middle of that, in limbo, in a physical Nexvita . Are you calling in your mind now, "I want to see my baby sister!" from where ever you are?

I guess not.

I guess I should ignore what I'm being told. 

I guess I shouldn't believe everything.

A message to the higher authorities of the English language.

Love, as we all know, is a simple word; Four letters, one syllable. It does not do justice to what it represents.
Love is complicated, beautiful, and sometimes even dangerous.
It is also a more commonly said word, than action or true feeling.
But perhaps, just maybe, if it was represented differently, by such a word as Dra'vene. Then it would not be said lightly, or taken for granted.
Perhaps then, we could adequately convey the full meaning, of love.

Ω (Omega)

Dear Sir/Madam of the Council of the regulation of the English Language,

I am writing to you to propose the introduction of the word Ω. As you may know, Ω is a Greek letter named Omega. It is already used in computer science, physics and maths; however, I do feel that it should be introduced into the English language officially.

As you know, children of today have begun to introduce internet acronyms such as OMG and LOL into their vocabulary. Many have forgotten how to speak and write standard English but have become fluent at chat speak. Furthermore, history has become one the most detested subjects by a students with a sharp decrease in university applications which has nothing to do with fees.

Ω could be used as a gentle way to introduce it into teens' vocabulary. "OMG" is spelt rather similarly to "omega", so Ω would save teens time when on our keyboards which appears to be the cause for the existence of chat speak ("LOL" being shorter to write than Laugh Out Loud.) With luck, this shall re-ignite a love for history in many children when they discover that history is, in fact, influencing our lives today and possibly promote tourism in countries with a rich historical background in Europe and beyond and aiding the economy of Greece from collapsing.

I sincerely hope you consider my proposal and feel Ω, this is a great idea towards this idea like I do.I am sure many Germans would like this proposal in order to relieve financial pressure off their government to help the Greeks.

Ahem. Um. Hello there…ah…board of editors. I’m Dr. Adeline Barlow…representing the NSF. That’s the National Science Foundation. Ah…assuming you got my email, you know what I’m going to be presenting today…so…let’s just get started.

It has come to the attention of many scientists in my field that there are no good names for ice. Now, I’m not referring to the ice your freezer makes. There are actually over ten different states that ice can be in. These are defined by temperature and pressure, and are outlined on this chart… The chart’s too technical, isn’t it? Okay, never mind.

To get to the point…the three states of ice scientists are most concerned about are seven, ten, and eleven. These are some of the most interesting states, but they’re also the hardest for non-scientists to understand. These kinds of ices are solids, but they’re not frozen. Ices VII, X, and XI exist at room temperature or higher, and are kept solid only by pressure. Now…maybe this is just me…but I’ve noticed that the general public often needs this explained several times. So, to solve this problem, my colleagues and I have come up with a different name for these ices.

Scientists from the NSF have already begun referring to ices VII, X, and XI as “alsigoosh.” This new word is simple, easy to pronounce, and provides an apt description of what these ices will do if you were to grab some and squish it in your hand. It is a combination of “alsius,” the Latin word for “frosty,” and “goosh,” which should be self-explanatory.

Should you decide to add this new word to your dictionary, the concept of ices VII, X, and XI will be much easier to understand.

What’s that? No, I don’t have time to explain the ices again. I have hydrogen pellets to detonate. Have a good day.

Supernastication

To whom it may concern;

We live in a world of constant technology. Facebook messages and texts keep us forever communicating. Sites like YouTube and YWS keep us entertained. These things along with music and books hardly give us any time to do the-activity-that-should-not-be-named, dare I name, the child of the creature from the black lagoon. Homework.

The word “procrastination” doesn’t quite cover the life and activities of your average teen. May I introduce the word “supernastination”? The word that describes the homework life of high schoolers (and some college students.) Supernastination is “any homework completed as early as five minutes before class to two seconds before handing it in.”

Teenagers will love this new word as it finally gives them to discuss with each other their methods of supernasticating. As a long term goal I hope to have workshops and conventions throughout the nation to help teens perfect their skills. They will wear their title "Supernasticator" with pride.

As we enter an age that’s incredibly detail oriented fast mass communication we must be as precise with words as possible. Please consider “supernastination” as a candidate for your new teenage dictionary.We need your help to make our dreams of supernasticating a reality. Thank you.

Insanitize

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to you regarding the fact that one vital word is missing from the dictionary. Its inclusion would have been of great use to mankind, especially writers, and would have benefited readers also.

The word I am referring to, ladies and gentlemen, is ‘insanitize’.

How many times have you seen a phrase such as ‘he made her go mad’, or ‘he lost his sanity because of her’? I think that we might both agree that to say, ‘he insanitized her’, or, vice versa, ‘she insanitized him’, would be a much more effective way to go about it. It allows writers to express such a statement in a truly casual manner, but might also be used in texts where only the briefest of tones could be used. Without it, as I have demonstrated, conveying such a simple statement would be a rather tedious task, and often not a welcome sight within the context of a novel.

The more control a writer is given, the more efficient can their writing become, conveying more beauty per fewer words. I personally see the word ‘insanitize’ to be one of the words which would enrich the English language. Even to be on the same level as ‘demonize’, for example. It is a word which would save the time of many writers, encourage statements regarding the concept of making someone insane and provide yet another way to write something.

I ask you to include this word in the next release of your dictionary, and if not, then to kindly reply to me, stating your reason, in order for me to be able to determine whether I should pose the same request to Other International Dictionary if you were to decline my proposition . Thank you for the consideration. ^^

Dear Oxford University Press,

I have found that there is not a suitable word in the English language to properly contradict normalcy. I assure you, this certainly is not the ramblings of a single lunatic who lives in her parent’s basement. There are hordes of lunatics around the country who are enraged at the lack of a proper word to describe their demeanor. Therefore, I propose that the word insanicy be inducted into the English language. If insanicy were introduced in the next edition of the dictionary, hundreds of people would soon be proclaiming their insane behavior as insanicy! And in conclusion, insanicy would be a great addition to the next edition of the Oxford Dictionary.

My dear colleagues and competitors,

I am here before you today to speak about a revolution in literary terminology. It has been said of the English language that we are, much like blight, that which saps the corners of other great tongues. Not today, my friends! Today we come together in this great hall to vote upon the newest of our linguistic marvels. Be not afraid! We are all aware that language changes and shapes itself around the newest of concepts and creations and this is just one of those times.

Randomostity, it is beautiful in its simplicity, is it not? We are a generation of confusion, of down and out loafers to our parents and presidents of the social world. This term, this randomosity, is that which embodies who we, as a generation, are! I should like to hear you say it, colleagues, try out this perfect term in your mouths because I assure you that regardless of the outcome of this vote, randomosity will spread to the far reaches of internet culture and consume a tide of disenfranchised youth. There is a hunger for this word, and it is our pleasure to bring that word to the people.

To be more clear, the definition has been described as thus: Randomosity – Adverb; The state of being or being part of random occurrences and activities. Also known as being in a state of complete randomness.

I urge you to hear the plea of the people, distinguished guests and come to the decision to make this word OUR word. Let it be known that writers all over the globe will come together under the banner of randomosity and allow themselves to be free and expressive as they see fit! Oh what a boon to our international community, can you imagine the joy that could be at the hands of the youth? Keep them off the streets and put them into books, books of randomosity!

I have given you all of the points which I can; I have argued my case as thoroughly as my passion may admit. This is a subject so close to my heart that I will abstain from voting, in the interest of fair judgement.

To whom it may concern,

Recently it has come to my attention that some words just aren’t enough, for example the word “the”. We have been using this word for as long as anyone can remember, so isn’t it time to move on? I propose a new word, yes, a new word, one that could join or even replace “the”. This word is xoop (pronounced Z-uh-p). This word is much better than “the” in a plethora of ways. First of all, it sounds cooler. Second, it starts with x, finally bringing use to this lonely letter. Also, it would be the first ever synonym for the word “the”. Think about it, it may come in handy if, say, you could only use the same letter to start a word five times in a paragraph, not that that would ever happen.

I must stress to you just how revolutionary that this word would be to the English language. Imagine, a whole new breed of words to replace these ancient ones like “it”, “my”, “me” and “you”. Letters that were previously neglected would come to proper use, for example, “q”, “z” and “k”. I believe that this word will be well received. If our generation can speak entirely using acronyms like “lol” and “omg” then I think that they can handle this. So, please help renovate the English language, and add this amazing invention of speech to the dictionary. Thank you.

To whom it may concern;


Language has been used to convey thoughts and feelings for as far back as anyone can remember. From primal grunts and calls to the complex wording structures we use today, language has helped us understand the world and each other. Although our language spread far and wide covering most of the world's things, concepts, and feelings, I’ve noticed the lack of a word for a certain concept.

Anyone who has had a few moments to spare in their lives to pause and think may have come across this idea. As some have noticed, our bodies are very well adapted to caring for itself. From food processing, to our blood systems, to interaction with the outside world. Our bodies are almost completely self-sufficient. Almost.

Although our bodies work like a well-oiled machine, don’t machines need fuel? Some substance to work and function? We need things such as food and clothing. It’s common knowledge that we can’t regularly provide food from our bodies. We need to get these things from plants and animals.

But don’t the plants and animals need substance too? When you think about it we are all connected; biological and non-biological. Don't animals decay to give plants nourishment? Don't plants need water from its surroundings? Don't humans need food from plants? And not only are we connected physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. We are all part of the same world. We work together to survive and thrive.

We need a name for this beautiful concept. This is where my new word comes into play;

Omnidesis.

From the Latin ‘omni-’ for all or universally, and ‘-desis’ meaning bind. This new word perfectly describes the harmonious relationship between the various beings and environments of the world around us.

I hope that you may add this word not only to the English language, but to all languages so that we will be further connected.
