Back in August 2008, YWS held its last Olympics and we saw JFW1415 rise to victory with two gold medals and one silver. We also witnessed the mighty power of Team SPEW who took away three golds, four silvers and two bronze in total.

It is here again. Welcome to the YWS Olympics 2012!

When you say here, when exactly do you mean?

The Olympics start next week! The first event will be released on the 6th August at 11:00am GMT and the last will end on the 13th August 11:00am GMT. That's seven events in total, one each day and you have all day to complete the event (and all night as well!)

But what is the Olympics?

Members of YWS compete across a week of events to earn medals. These events are often short writing exercises and have included: writing letters home from a futuristic camp in 1337 (chat-speak); writing a short story without using the letter 'e' and writing the most creative 'ban a member' post.

Every day of the olympics, a new event is announced and members submit their entries by posting on the event thread. This thread will be found in The Lounge and will remain open for 24 hours. After that, the thread is locked and another will appear. Medals are awarded to the top three entrants, much as they are in the real Olympics.

Medals, shiny. Do I get a real medal?

Afraid not! There will be a prize for the top three medal holders overall, but we're not telling you what that is yet.

You said something about teams?

Yes I did. All members can enter as individuals but they can also compete as part of a team. There are no prizes for winning teams but you do get bragging rights and what better prize is there than that?

So how do I join a team?

Start talking to people! You can suggest team names here, last time we had things like 'Team Australia', 'Team Britain', 'Team America' and 'Team SPEW' but it really can be anything. You need to find at least four members who will join and then submit the name of the team and its members by day one of the Olympics (6th August). To do this, either post them on this thread or send a pm to me.

Do I have to be in a team to take part?

Nope! We had plenty of members last time who didn't affiliate themselves with a team and it in no way affects your personal medal score.

There's still something I'm not sure about

In that case, post your question here and I'll try to answer it as soon as I can!

So, if we join a team we still score personnel medals? Or is it the whole team?

You still score personal medals! There will be two leaderboards, one for individual performance and one for team performance :)

Won't individuals be at a disadvantage?
Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried? (29:2)

Nope! Think of it as two contests, everyone is part of the individuals contest and they'll get ranked. But then people can also choose to take part in the team contest. Same events, same medals, but two lists of rankings.

So if person A gets 2 golds and person B gets 2 silvers, then person C gets a gold and a silver, the individual rankings will be:

A - 6 (Gold is worth 3 points, 2*3=6)
C - 5 (Gold is worth 3, silver is worth 2, 3+2=5)
B - 4 (Silver is worth 2 points, 2*2=4)

But say person B and C are on team Dog and person A is on team Cat, then the team rankings will show:

Dog - 9
Cat - 6
