College Courses

In a year, I shall be shooting off to college.

I shall be dropping subjects that I don't care about at all (maths, PE to name a couple) and saying tarrah to quite a few of my friends.

Being on this website, it is certainly evident that a writing career interests me, so I'm hoping to study English Language and English Literature in college. Now, in England (I'm not sure about overseas) we usually study four courses the first year of college, and then keep three of the four to gain the full A levels.

I know there must be a hell of a lot of you guys who are studying in college right now, so I'm just asking for a bit of advice. What subjects go well with English? What subjects should I avoid? What subjects do you regret doing/ not doing?

Hi, i've almost done with my first year of A-levels.
A great deal of english students in my year also do history as a subject. Quite a few also do socialology and/or psychology, but i'm not too sure why.

With english, it's quite an intellectual subject (IMO) and usually the subjects that go with that are; english, history, art, physics and drama (to name a few)

i will say though that because i do history, i can tell you that whilst i enjoy it, it is quite hard unless you are very committed to the work, you get 2 exams, 1 with source work (the hardest exam i've ever done) and one where you answer 2 essay style questions in 1hr 30 mins. But it is very interesting.

You could even do art history, a science; biology, physics or chemistry (to balance out and broaden your subjects) or hopefully, your school/college will provide an AS language lesson as mine does (though i think some schools offer it as a full a-level) which is still worth 60 UCAS

You may be able to do the 'extended project' where you can write a 5000 word essay on anything you want which is also worth 60 UCAS.

I've heard that 'General studies' can be pointless and some universities don't accept it.

To be honest though, i didn't pick related subjects when i chose what to do, i chose what i knew i would enjoy and what i was good at (Art, Business, History and Physics) and it also depends on what you want to do after A-levels. i regret doing physics now, mainly because the subject got too hard for me to remain enthused, plus i was more committed to my otehr subjects, as a result i'm on an A in art and business.

there isn't really any subjects you should avoid as such, all will take you somewhere, one way or another. It honestly depends on what you will know you will be committed at.
