It must've been the July of last year. I was bored. I decided to doodle.
And then, from no more than a sporadic assortment of lines, emerged an idea. An idea that I became so instantly enthralled in that I knew I should write about it - So I did.

And from there, I began working hard on my first glorified novel. And I was up to chapter fourteen of nineteen meagre months ago when I realised that I wasn't ready. I needed to plan, and I needed to plan immediately.
Of course, I already had a pretty solid outline of an overarching plot which would span four books, but little did I realise at that point that a "pretty solid outline" was no where near sufficient. It was only until recently, upon observing a particularly enthralling scene mid-way through a Harry Potter movie marathon, that it became apparent to me how much time and preparation had gone into the series on JK Rowling's part. And it suddenly clicked. If she'd spent five years planning the Potter chronicles beforehand in order to iron out any kinks or plot-holes, to make sure that no details were out of place, no story lines too farfetched or unbelievable (relatively, of course), then that is what I must do, also. Only once I truly know my characters and the world they inhabit like the back of my hand, so to speak, will I be ready to comfortably put pen to paper - or in my instance, fingers to keyboard.
I realised how much writing this book series means to me. As soon as that became clear, and only then, was when I fully understood how much time I'll need to invest. And that's what I plan to do. Even if it's a struggle, I will do it. Even if it takes years before I'm properly ready, that's fine too. I know I can spend that time wisely to improve my skills and techniques.

So I suppose, what I'm really trying to say here is, only when I am completely familiar with the fictional world I have created will I be able to realistically portray that in my story. And maybe - just maybe - in a few years time, all that hard work that's yet to come will have paid off.

If you have been reading this somewhat pointless story, thank you - and I encourage you to share any epiphanies you may have had yourself whilst writing/planning your novels.
You're my favourite.

Hey,
Okay so I hate planning! I truly do, I just want to get in there and start to write! I know that I should plan and I make every effort to do it but I can never seem to sit down and actually plot out my story except for the main plot. As I don't write many stories, mainly just poems and some occasional short stories it may not be the same.

As for epiphanies well I've never really had one.

Bye!
Don't let the Nargles bite.
And don't let a dementor kiss you good night.

It's a charm actually. It keeps away the Nargles- Luna

Well I for one know that if I don't have a plan, I'm likely to make a mistake! I see what you mean though, about being so pumped to write something that the proper planning goes right out the window..!

Plan. Meticulously. Figure out every last detail of every corner of every room of every corridor of every house of every street of every village of every district of every country of every continent of your world.

Plan. Meticulously. Figure out every moment of every memory of every day of every week of every month of every year in every nook and ever cranny of every characters history, mind and heart.

Plan. Meticulously. Figure out every reason of every cause of every movement of every seed of every fruit of every branch of every plot of every character of every history of every place, event and life in your world.

Plan. Meticulously. Figure out every detail of every plot you will come up with. Plan, and re-plan, what everything is like and the distant effects of every decision your meticulously planned characters will make in every meticulously planned location for every meticulously planned event in your meticulously planned plot.

Plan. Meticulously.

Then watch how real your main character is. Watch him change his mind, change his mood, buckle under the weight of the world and the plot you have created. Watch him do what is natural to every living thing in this world which is to break apart and do that one something uncharacteristically stupid that you never saw coming-

- and destroy the glorious balance of your meticulously planned world.

Watch the life you created tear apart the world you spent so long intricately crafting.

Smash your forehead against the FGH keys when he calls it an epiphany.
We were born to be amazing.

Meh. Planning is for wimps.
