Well this is my newest project. I haven't gotten that much typed out. Its mostly in my notebook, so I'm going to try and get it all typed out.

Its only been mildly edited, so point out any grammar mistakes, (I'm not the best grammar person.)

Chapter One
Silent as ever, Kristelle sat in the raft as it smoothly surged down the river. Her hands were tied behind her back so she couldn’t move. Her face was beaten and dirty--unrecognizable from its former beauty, her hair dirty and stringy. Her once clean gown was now ragged and filthy. Her body had been beaten and broken, her beauty marred, family taken away, but she still had her pride and ever burning desire to destroy those who held her captive.

Callum sat on his cushioned chair at the front of the raft. He was pleased with himself because he had captured a good lot of young woman that he could sell at the slave market in the city. He knew that he would be able to make a good amount of money off of them for they were all beautiful and young, and he hadn’t allowed any of his men to lay a hand on them. They had only had trouble from one named Kristelle-- she was the most desirable of all the woman, but she was deadly. When they first captured her she had knifed one of his men killing him instantly and injured another; she couldn’t be beaten into submission, and there was an eeriness about her that worried Callum. Freeing his head of thoughts about her he grinned thinking of the profits he would make in a few hours time.
“Koby!” He called to the man in charged of sailing the raft, “how long ’till we hit the city?”
“About two hours,” was the answering shout. Excellent, he thought, soon I’ll be able to enjoy myself again.
Callum walked out to find the woman, Orona, who made sure that all of his slaves looked to be in the best possible shape. She always did her job thoroughly and well because she feared him and had a dominating personality that she exercised over the slaves.
“Orona there’s work to be done! We arrive at the city in a few hours time!” Callum yelled knowing that she would answer.
“Yes milord, its already been started,” she called from near the back of the raft where all the girls were strung together.

Kristelle ignored the woman who was going around with damp rags telling all the girls to scrub their faces and arms clean. She let the rag tossed at her fall to the ground, and just looked straight ahead not giving any indication that she knew it was there.
“Girl,” Orona said, “you have to get cleaned up or else you’ll have another beating in line for you.”
“I can’t,” Kristelle said coldly not looking at Orona, “my hands are tied behind my back.”
Giving her a hard look, Orona picked up the rag and began scrubbing the layers of filth off of Kristelle’s face, neck, arms and hands. She didn’t stop until Kristelle’s face was raw and pink.
“There now dearie doesn’t that feel nice,” Orona said in a sardonic voice. Kristelle didn’t reply, but gave her a cold glare.
Orona walked away now tossing combs at all the girls barking at them to brush the tangles out of their hair. Soon she was back at Kristelle harshly yanking out any offending knots in her hair. She didn’t try to be gentle at all and Kristelle’s eyes began to water.
After all of the girls were cleaned up, two men came around tossing them there daily ration of bread, dried meat and mug of water. One of them came to Kristelle and knelt in front of her to untie her wrists. He let his hands linger on her neck and arms.
“If I had a knife you would be dead,” she said cold rage dripping from her voice.
“Except you don’t wench, you’re hands are tied behind their back and you don’t have any weapons.” He growled in her ear, “and if you try anything you’ll have another beating.”
Kristelle didn’t reply because she knew that the man’s words weren’t just an empty threat.
She didn’t know how long she could take all the pain and fear, and how long she could keep her cold indifferent mask in place. Normally she was cheerful and kind, how she was acting now was the exact opposite of her real personality, and she knew she was growing weaker.
As soon as the guards had left she began chewing down her food ravenously. They hadn’t fed her yesterday because she had attempted to escape. She had failed in the escape, but to her delight managed to kick one of the guards hard enough in the head for him to pass out.
As soon as the food was in her belly, Kristelle felt contended. Slowly she drifted off to sleep, and dreamt of fire and fear.

To begin with, welcome to the Young Writers Society. I must ask you to read the rules here because they explain that you must post at least two comments on others' work before submitting your own. In each literary forum, the very first topic is a Sticky and in the title, you will read "MUST READ". You may find it here.

Second, due to the fact that you are new, I would like to ask that, when you post your work, you post it in such a way that each new paragraph is double spaced like you can see me doing. Forums on the web commonly do not allow members to indent, though there are ways to get around that. Because forums do not have this feature, we ask you to double space your paragraphs from one another.

With that taken care of, I shall now review your piece of work here. If you have any questions on the technique that I use, feel free to PM me.

Evaluation

"Silent as ever, Kristelle sat in the raft as it smoothly surged down the river."
I would not necessarily use the word ‘surged’ in this context. It isn’t the best verb with an adverb such as ‘smoothly’.

"Her face was beaten and dirty--unrecognizable from its former beauty, her hair dirty and stringy."
Your portrayal of this Kristelle is slightly repetitive, with the use of the word ‘dirty’ more than once within a single sentence.

This introductory paragraph lacks sustenance with both a monotonous tone and rather a lack of emotion. Many of these sentences begin with ‘her’, so you may do well to differentiate. More than once did I find that you could easily replace a comma with a semicolon or add more substance to the sentence.

". . . lot of young woman that he could . . ." ; ". . . of all the woman, but she was . . ."
Replace ‘woman’ with ‘women’.

"thoughts about her he grinned thinking"
Placing a comma between 'her' and 'he' would make this sentence grammatically correct.

As with the previous sentence, you seem to tell the story, rather than show. With the use of so many pronouns, it can get slightly confusing, so consider replacing those pronouns with actual names. Also, this sudden change of character is very awkward; consider either elaborating on Kristelle's story, or get rid of the entire first paragraph.

'Koby!' He called to the man in charged of sailing the raft, 'how long ’till we hit the city?'
The pronoun 'he' need naught be capitalized because his first quotation is part of the sentence. Essencially, the exclimation point acts as a comma, but signifies a shout of some kind.

"'About two hours,' was the answering shout."
The description on the quotation made by the one named Koby is very awkward here. There are numerous ways to fix this; and example would be 'he shouted in return.'

"Excellent, he thought, soon I’ll be able to enjoy myself again.
There are various techniques to write a character's thoughts. This one is acceptable, but you may consider italisizing the thoughts so it is easily distingished. It's really up to you whether you heed this advice or not.

"and had a dominating personality that she exercised"
Rather than 'personality', 'manner' for instance may be a better choice.

'Orona there’s work to be done! . . .'"
Placing a comma between 'Orona' and 'there's' would make this quotation grammatically correct.

"Callum yelled knowing that she would answer."
Placing a comma between 'yelled' and 'knowing' would make this sentence grammatically correct.

"to the ground, and just looked"
The comma here is unnecessary.

The paragraph here indicates that Orona is instructing all the women to clean. In the previous paragraph, you descibe the women as being 'stung together'. Therefore, you may consider distinguishing as to how the women are bound together or describe, for instance, Orona untying them to allow them to wash themselves.

'Except you don’t wench, you’re hands are tied behind their back and you don’t have any weapons.'
'Their' does not make sense in this context and therefore should be replaced by 'your'.

You describe previously that he had untied her hands from behind her back, yet his quotation opposes this fact.

". . . Kristelle felt contended."
I believe you intended on having the word 'content' rather than 'contended'.

Analysis

I find it hard to believe that this is the entirety of chapter one. If so, you may consider expanding on it. The plot here has potential, but as you write this, I am led to believe it will be going downhill. I continue to be uncertain who the main character is, so you may consider sorting that out.

I can't imagine why they are on a raft. It would have to be a pretty hefty raft to sustain all those on it. Your vague descriptions don't reveal any indication as to how many women or men there are. Furthermore, having a raft is rather trivial to transport soon-to-be slaves. You'd think there would be a hint of resistance, though I would jump off the raft and take my chances in getting killed rather than getting sold into slavery. A ship would probably be much more fitting in this situation.

This story lacks personality and has a dire need to be elaborated on. You make many trivial mistakes that merely need reviewing by yourself. At this stage, I believe you need to take more time in your work rather than submitting the first draft. This is a perfectly fine piece for your own use--to map out exactly what will be happening when--but it doesn't belong to the public at the stage it is now.

Literature demands time, and if you lack the patience, you may want to consider more devotion or another interest. If this sounds harsh, I apologize, but this is the harsh reality if you wish to seek writing as a career in life.

If you disagree with me in any field of what I have told you, feel free to ignore. It is your choice as to what you do with this. I am merely here to assist you if you are willing to take in the assistance.

Hey Welcome to YWS. :)

This piece of work was good.

After all of the girls were cleaned up, two men came around tossing them there daily ration of bread, dried meat and mug of water. One of them came to Kristelle and knelt in front of her to untie her wrists.

It should be Their instead of there.

I liked the ending that she dreamt of fire and fear.Is that all about the story,I mean I am eager to know about what happens next…,or else the story sounds a bit vague.

Keep writing. :)

Thanks everybody for reading and reviewing it.
Your review was especially helpful Gannon, and I will be doing a LOT more editing after you pointed out all of that.
I'm trying to get more written down on the computer. So I'll try today and write more.
