Loosely based on the novel I'm writing, We Are the Ninety-Nines.It is 2072, 36 years after the end of the third world war, and the United States is in complete disarray. In the aftermath of the war, fascist tyrant Mars Thrasher led a political coup, and now rules as dictator. Now, citizens' lives are defined by their social status--towns are divided into lavish estate districts and dilapidated slums, keeping the ultra-rich separated from the ultra-poor.
The town of Caldera is no exception. It is conveniently split by a river, which divides the two areas--to the east is the Riverside District, complete with mansions, shopping areas, restaurants, and the beautiful Riverside Square, and to the west is the Tube District, named for its lava tubes. Caldera sits at the base of an active volcano (formerly Yellowstone) and the residents of the Tube District work in the geothermal energy industry. The hours are long, the pay is minimal, and workers have virtually no rights. The entire Tube District is fenced off--although poisonous sulfur fields and the surrounding radioactive wasteland would probably be enough to keep everyone in. Riversider police patrol the slum day and night, clubs in hand, keeping the tubers quiet and complacent. Thrasher has Caldera in the palm of his hand--but his vise-like grip isn't quite tight enough.
Using old radio equipment, an underground group of tubers has intercepted messages from the Global Alliance, getting a glimpse into the outside world. They have made plans to move against Thrasher's tyranny, but they lack the resources and support they need. Besides, the tubers would have to be crazy to try anything like that. Malnourished and overworked, they wouldn't stand a chance against Thrasher's trained troops.
There is only one group that dares to fight back.
Collectively known as the Specters, they are a band of eight tubers who fight for Caldera's freedom. Sneaking into the Riverside district under cover of darkness, they gather intelligence and supplies for the tubers, and cause riversider panic. In addition, they give short weekly radio broadcast, in an attempt to alert the Global Alliance to their plight. No one has seen their faces, no one knows who they are, and no one has ever caught them. And no one knows what kind of pandemonium will ensue should they succeed in rallying the tubers behind them.
You are one of the eight Specters. It is your mission to protect your fellow tubers, thwart Thrasher and his minions, and, whenever possible, wreak havoc in the Riverside District. There are also spots for the tuber leaders, and Global Alliance ambassadors (they will come in later, so those writing for an ambassador may want to take two characters).
