RMS Titanic 100th Anniversary Painting.

Hi guys, earlier i sat down and thought i'd do some painting for my A-level art coursework (which is my choice of 'cultures of middle earth') instead i ended up doing this.

the thing is, i thought earlier, if i was to look back what would i say i did on the 100th anniversary of the sunking of the RMS Titanic? so i decided to paint her in all her glory. it is hard to believe 100 years ago right now she was nearing the region of cape race at over 20 knots. 2 hours and 10 minutes to go.

i wish the photo could do the painting justice, the pencil shines too much in the light...

I have to ask though, what is that white scratch looking thingy on the Titanic's bow?

Hiya, thanks for your comment the white scratch? you mean the ligt curve under the forward superstructure? that is where the light hits the curvature of the hull, if you mean the small horizontal scratches, they're hull plate lines.

i have got to be honest, it looks much better in real life, the colours are more prominent and the pencil is darker, when you take a picture with a flash it makes the pencil shine

to be fair i should've continued the shine on from where it is, you can see it here in this photo of the olympic, but it is quite hard to get it looking like that in a watercolour

No... I meant the white scratches thingies up higher on the bow.... Oh! Is it the anchor holder? Or the anchor itself?

I think it's wonderful in the painting anyways! :3

ooh that, yes that is the anchor, had to draw that in pencil because i forgot to do it in paint and i ddin't want to ruin it

I really liked this. I just read an article on the titanic today, due to the 100th anniversary, and I was like 'hey, it's been a long time since I've really heard a lot about it', so I researched it again for old times sake (I research a lot regardless of how much I already know), and did you know that they've actually begun selling 25 foot inflatable replicas as slides? SLIDES! It was sort of bogus, and slightly morbid. It's like saying 'hey kids! Lets have fun on this bouncy slide depicting a scene where thousands of people died!' Sick right?

On another note, you have really nice perspective in this piece, nice clean lines, closeness, distance, and the medium you chose to work with works really well. I really liked the effect you had with the smoke, the different values just within the grays, as well as the textures and contrast between the water, sky and the sleekness of the boat itself. I thought this was really well done over all.

My only nitpick? It's nearly impossible to control, but I thought that near the four smoke columns (I'm really sucking with remembering boat lingo right now) that the lines were just a tad too dark in contrast to the sky. It slightly reminded me of how when people draw faces, they rely on the outline more than the shading (if that makes sense) But now that I look at it again... gah. This is difficult. I don't think its that anymore. Maybe its how you have a lot of dimension to the black ring at the top of the columns, but the yellow part doesn't give quite as much dimension. I'm not sure what it is lol, there's just something a tiiiny bit off.

Overall, this is really really great, the only reason I brought up the above mentioned nitpicks is because I try to give Some sort of helpful criticism in each one of my reviews, but I had to search really hard for something in this piece. Really good job =]

Hello! first of all thanks for your compliments, it means alot

do you mean the outlines for the funnels? originally there were no outlines, but the watercolours, being what they are, ran slightly and it made them look really crooked so i used a little logic and applied a pencil outline to give the far off illusion that they were infact straight, it i was to rub them away it would not look as good i can tell you hope thats cleared that up for you

if i was to give myself criticism i'd say that the gold line under C-Deck is too crooked and the colours ran slightly on the forward mast, but hey, no one's perfect and an artist will always think he could have done better whilst everyone thinks their work is good, so yes thank you a lot, it is good that you did some research, its one of those topics where you cant really stop until you know too much (like me) hehe

@TheSunChildren- funnels! Thats the word! And I totally get it, sometimes the mediums do things we just don't want them to do. (Especially water color). However, I think you pulled off a really great effect with everything regardless. So thanks for clearing that up with me! But like I said before, this was a really neat piece, especially if you didn't start with pencil at all! I give mad props for that. But I'm really excited to look into some of your other works! However, I'm sort of becoming more and more drowsy by the minute so I'm going to hit the sack. Later!
