Maybe he could design something. Some new technology that might help the mission.

Spoiler
A year later, PhD in hand, Nicholas searched for a job researching. He submitted his thesis and resume to nearly twenty different space programs, and got rejection letters and white noise from all of them.
But one of the programs, impressed with his resume but unable to use him, sent his thesis off to a different, rather more secret program, who were also quite impressed with his theories and research on alien plant life, and offered him a spot on their trip to Mars.
Nicholas, worried another oppourtunity wouldn't come along, though confused as to how they got his thesis, gladly accepted.

How's that?
It kinda fits more than designing something, considering he's a physicist, not an engineer...
frickdamn, son.

Sorry, I wanted to do this, but it seams as though I won't be able to join. I had my computer taken away, and it seems unfair to join, when I won't be able to come online. Sorry! This sounds like it will be an awesome story!

Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now. So does avoiding homework and creeping around YWS!
