How do you like to write?

I've found that many people like to write in a specific way. Some prefer pen and paper while others prefer the word processor. Some sit by a window as they look out into the sky as others huddle into a dank corner of a murky basement. And some like to dictate their stories to a kidnapped orphan boy from some far off country as they intermittently threaten to skip rope with his intestines if he makes a mistake.

Personally I sit on my bed, typing away at my laptop's filthy little keyboard while listening to music sung in a language most people would fail to identify, and occasionally I'll pace around the room in a deep train of thought regarding what I'm writing about.

So tell us: how do YOU like to write?

Well, first I sit down in my computer chair and place my pillow upright in my lap, for ease of snuggling. (Snuggling pillows helps with writer's block. Really!) Then I throw on my headphones and start up some ambient noise. Something like a recording of a quiet, windy forest at night, a rainy day, or the faint whistling of air in a cave. I helps me concentrate, a lot.

And then I open Openoffice and slam my head into my keyboard for an hour. Eventually something legible appears on my screen, and I call it a day.

The first thing I need is comfort. I will not sit on a regular chair, because even if it's comfortable for the moment, I hate to sit in it for a long time.
What comes next is music. Music, music, music. Always music. No music? No writing. It's what makes those long exams so terrible to do, as simple as it can be. There's no music and you're never comfortable.

My favorite spot is my bed and specifically below the window (I have a room in the attic, so it's a window in the roof (which is pretty much diagonally). I deliberately put my bed there because I love stargazing. It inspires me, and inbetween writing I like to take a moment to stare.

Oh, and then I write whenever something pops up in my head.

As long as I have a computer or a phone or any kind of technology with a keyboard, I'm pretty much set. Can't bring myself to write with a pencil and paper for whatever reason. I think it's because I make too many mistakes, and backspacing is so much easier than erasing!

Well I get very weird when it comes to writing.Whenever I see blank papers my hand starts to itch.What I firstky need are:Papers/notebook(never rough surfaces),a pencil and rubber.Also,I can never write without a table and chair,I;ve tried sitting on my bed and writing-I fail everytime.I'd need music sometimes,it gives me ideas and for some unknown reason speeds up my writing.
I wish it was that simple.
Then after I'm done writing in pencil I over-write it with a gel pen,rub out the pencil line AND then type it out on my blog,right here or just as a word document.An advantage it gives me is I correct spelling/grammatical mistakes or put in better phrases or words making the story better for the reader and for me:)

I hop on my computer, start up Pandora, and then sit and stare at a blank screen. Then I get on YWS and procrastinate for a few hours. Finally, I say, "Shino, (I don't really call myself Shino, I really say my real name) you need to write. And then I write and write and write until I see black letters and white page when I close my eyes.

I have the some of the weirdest writing habits and I am very picky about all of them. All of my best work is created away from a computer. If I sit at a computer I will get nothing done because I am on YWS, Facebook, Youtube etc. etc.I also feel that it blocks my writing creativity. I like to write outdoors, perferably in a park or beach. With me are my notebook and a pencil/pen. Pens are for poetry only and pencils are for my stories and novel in progress.

I usually just put my laptop, whcih is on my desk, on, and vaguely suspect the time I'm going to put it off. Right now I'm suspecting two hours and thirty minutes. So I kind of decide when to start writing(usually after an hour or so of internet) and then I start to write. I'm not really a compulsive type though, but I kind of make up these things automatically. Other times, I write when I'm bored. I write with Word, twenty point Century School Book, but the title in Chiller.

I can only write if I have a mechanical pencil, a separate eraser, and a notebook. And I tend to have to be listening to a song on repeat. I like to be inside, on my bed, and alone. And I like to have a water bottle or juice.

I can't come up with an idea when I'm inside, and I can't hardcore write when I'm outside. So what usually happens is I take a nice long walk with a notebook and a pencil that doesn't have an eraser, sit down somewhere nice and just brainstorm. Then, when I feel suffienctly inspired I come back indoors, lock myself in a room and turn on the computer. There can't be any noise or I loose focus, and it's better if the chair is big so I can sit in it like a wierdo (I have a thing against having your feet on the floor and your back against the chair) If I do that I can write nonstop for hours.

In the dark, on my laptop, with music on(usually Johnny Cash) and my hands alternating between typing away and holding a cigar to my lips.

Indoors, definitely, because if I go outdoors I tend to be distracted and people-watch! So it's indoors, with a couple of songs to match my mood, and then pencil for idea brainstorming, or pen when I want to get some writing done. Otherwise it's opening my Wordpad and then typing away on my computer.

I like to write one word at a time.

But seriously, I only have a few requirements. I must have music (good music), and a relatively calm environment...usually when the rest of the household is asleep. It also helps to have a little spark of inspiration toward whatever story I'm working on...

School killed my writing habits, but here is an attempt to summarize what I tend to do...

For prose, it must be dark outside. I don't know what it is, but I have a nightmare of a time writing during the day (Unless I am on a rather long vacation, then I get to write all hours). Also, everything I have done during the day must be out of my head, which usually doesn't happen until 10 or 11 (or, on the weekends, till 8 or 9; vacations must have nothing on during the day, else the above applies). It helps if my house is quiet, with both my parents in bed or just my dad on the computer. For all-hours writing moods, I rarely write if both parents are home, and I try to get away from whichever one is to write.

Something has to be going through my head. This is usually the scene itself playing out in front of me. If it's on the early end of my writing (before 10), memories of music/sounds, or actual music (no sounds) gets added, but the actual music only lasts for about ten/twenty minutes into writing as I get into it and forget to press "replay" on YouTube.

I then write until whenever I go to bed, which can be anywhere from 10 minutes to three hours, because if I stay up past 11:30 I'm up until 1 or 2, almost guaranteed.

For poetry, I must have a junk pad of paper (usually gotten at a kid's craft supply store) and one of two possible kinds of pen I use to write poetry with. These supplies are completely essential, as I can never seem to write any sort of poetry on a keyboard. I must also have a line. Poetry is the only medium I write 100% inspired, and something has to make me think "that would make a good poem". It then goes from there. Where it goes I have no idea, as lines tend to just string themselves together.

I then do any edits if I'm posting/sharing it, but this is unlikely as about 80% of my poetry has never seen the light of day, and about half of what I do share is only shared to about 5 people.

For all of the above, chatting must be on pause, slow, or non-existent, YWS ignored, and no other social networks up.

Edit: *Looks at post length* Ohboy... how do I write anything with these habits? xD

Oh, goodness. I don't have any major habits, not really, but the question was how I like to write more than how I actually do, so...

Outside. In the mountains. So high in the mountains and deep in the wilderness, in fact, that Internet and cell phone service don't exist. Off the grid. Bonus points if this location has to be hiked to and there's a chance of encountering a bear.

Another favorite way to write is on in-transit to somewhere, particularly on trains, but trams and airplanes and ferries are also acceptable.

Of course, I only get the mountains during the summer on vacation, and in-transit when I'm in-transit. So when it's not summer vacation and when I'm not in-transit, I like to write wherever and whenever. I like to get to class early so that I can write, and if I have an hour between classes on campus, I like to stay on campus and write there. Same for a two or three hour break, though then the temptation to go and find ice cream is quite high. Outside is nice here if the weather is good, but if the weather's not great, there are plenty of spots inside that are particularly wonderful for one reason or another. (I also write during class, sometimes, in the margins of my lecture notes. I can't help it if my lectures give me ideas.)

And at home... with all those distractions of other things to potentially do, I prefer writing late at night when things are calm and the two most appealing things in the world are writing and sleep. Writing wins out until it doesn't, and then I sleep. Some days this keeps me up until 4 or 5 in the morning, and then I'm doomed the next day, but it's so very worth it.
