Grey

"A trifle," Grey said, shrugging elegantly. "I have better grounds in my island form... but that is so, so far away. Once I teach you to fly, we can visit it."
"You could?!" Exclaimed Zilla, excitedly.
"Oh yes," I replied, mildly. "But we get ahead of ourselves. Today, we teach you swordsmanship. Haedr will take it from here."
"To the ring, Zilla," said Haedr. Zilla followed, hesitant. Haedr tossed her a rapier. Zylla caught it on the fly, surprising herself. "The rapier is the fastest and lightest of all the swords. It can slay an unprepared opponent in an instant." Then he glanced at me. "But we'll be concentrating on defense," he added, hastily.
He assumed a fighting stance, feet apart, low on the ground, arms hanging lightly by his sides. "Mimic this," he instructed.

Zilla

I wrapped my fingers around the cold hilt and looked at Grey. He gave an encouraging nod and I copied Haredr's stance hesitantly, holding my arm clumsily, unaccustomed to the weight.
This is the lightest sword? I thought. I can hardly move it!

"Mirror my movements," Haredr said, his voice echoing through the arena. There was a flash of steel and his stance changed rapidly. I tried my best to keep up as he guided me through a range of movements, calling out instructions as I struggled to copy him.
"Arm higher," he said. "Lift your elbow! Guard your ribs!"
The point of the rapier shook violently and sweat streaked my body. Just when I thought I would drop the blade, Haredr allowed me to rest. I fell onto the earthen floor, gasping for breath, but before my muscles had stopped twitching, he was at it again. This time he stood directly in front of me.
"On guard," he commanded.
"Are you going to—" I was cut off as steel flashed in a straight line at my head. I closed my eyes—moved—a heavy impact shook my arm. I opened my eyes. My rapier had somehow risen to meet the attack and I had blocked his rapid strike.
"Very good," Haredr breathed, eyes glittering, as my protective stance caved in. "On guard."

I met his apparently leisurely strikes with violent defensive thrusts, but I was forced backwards by his attack until I stood with my back against the arena wall, large as it was, and he quietly slid his blade under my quivering defence, signalling the end of the bout. I fell to my knees and the end of my rapier stuck into the ground. Haredr was not even out of breath—in fact, he smilingly helped me up as I tried to hide my trembling legs.

How nice of you. And you shouldn't fear refusing Grey... fear refusing me  I'll repay the favor at some point.

Since this work is in danger of stagnation, we are PAUSING it until 18 May. Anyone who wants to stay in the SB, please notify in the DT. If you want to drop out, also please notify, and if we hear nothing from you, we take it that you are no longer interested. Any new members are welcome! No need to read the whole SB -- there will be a plot summary available for newcomers to read. So join up! Everyone's welcome! Just post straight into the DT.
