Sam Higgins - Pencil/Charcoal Drawing

This is a drawing of the MC of my novel, Sam Higgins. I felt like needed a visual reference to help me write, so I made this. I used pencils and a 6B charcoal stick on paper.

To tell you guys the truth, I'm absolutely in love with this drawing and won't change a thing about it. I love it too much! I just wanted to share it with you all! Comments and likes, please!!

Great drawing! I'm glad you won't change anything about it! I'm still gonna review like normal though, for things you can look for on your next project.

I absolutely love the shading, on the background, the hair especially, the face, the jacket. Oh, the jacket: I don't really know what it is made out of. The collar has a kind of shiny appearance because of contras tin the shading, but the rest of it looks like regular cotton or wool. It's a little confusing.

Also, the scruffiness is the only part that doesn't look absolutely perfect and fantastically amazing. The lines look like, well, pencil. lol

Otherwise, I love this piece and I would love to see more of what you've got!

I know you're not going to change it, but one thing to take note of for your future art projects:

You need to work on facial hair shading and strokes. Because of all the gorgeousness you drew, this is the one area that seemed slack and needs to be more dimensionalized. It needs a sense of layering like what you have for his hair.

See this. I know the styles are waaay off, but notice the layering where he initiates drawing the beard.

Hey there, CR!

I must say, this is a nifty sketch, and it's something I envy in a ton of people: the ability to draw more than a squiggle. There's plenty I could praise about this, but I want to give you special marks for your technique on his hair. It has a lovely texture, and you've captured a part and a crown quite nicely, so you definitely have some great techniques going on here.

Though you won't be changing anything, I'll make a note for future drawings so you can improve a bit: be careful of a few things--

1. Head placement on the neck. See how his neck is slightly askew? It bugs my OCD massively.
2. Length of head vs. Width of head. It may just be my tastes, but he seems a tad bit squat (short and fat), and could benefit from some elongating.
3. Like Lava said, the shading technique on the facial hair. What you've given him is closer to a 5 o'clock shadow than actual facial hair, but if you're aiming for shadow, your texture needs to change in the opposite direction.

Anyway, take the tips with a grain of salt: I'm not an artist, nor do I claim to be; however, I think my eye can service me well enough with this. You're good; keep it up!

I like your technique. I might just steal the hair shading skills from you:)

Just one suggestion: the nose. I wish you shaded it so it stuck out a bit more.

But Great job! I loved that I could see personality in the portrait.
