Chapter 11: The Inheritance
I gaze down at the board thoughtfully. I ignore the persistent, nagging inner voice that tells me that even if I capture her pieces she would still win. Finally, I close in and place my black stone; successfully swiping ten of her white stones off the board. I lost the war but I knew I managed a lot better than most for the first time.

Hana grins at me and sticks her hand out. A soft smile graces my face as well as we shake hands and congratulate the other on the good game.

After we place the Go set up a young boy walks in. He stoops and a look of fear crosses his face. Face now bright red he stutters, “I’m sorry! I must have taken the wrong way.”

My heart goes out to him. He made a mistake and it wasn’t like we were going to yell at him. With a kind smile I move closer to him. “It’s okay. Sides we were about to head to the cafeteria for dinner. Wish to join us?”

Timidly he nods at me. Slightly more at ease now he holds out his hand. With a warm laugh I grasp it. As we let go and start moving towards the door I introduce him to the others. Everyone politely introduces themselves and as we head out the door Hana explains his mistake, “You turned left. You should’ve gone right.”

He nods as if committing the information to memory before suddenly widening his eyes and apologetically smiles, ‘Sorry, I didn’t introduce myself. I’m Ryan Nightshade.”

We laugh softly as the hallway begins to curve towards rather impressively tall doors. Shocked at the ease it took to open them Hope whispers in awe, “This is amazing!”

I laugh at her as I concede in my mind that indeed the cafeteria was amazing. Taking in the strategically arranged tables so that they faced the head table and the quiet murmuring amongst the older kids I notice Rosa whispering with another woman at the head table. She glances at us and smiles encouragingly as I pick at table near the front.

As Hope and Rin sit next to me I notice Ryan standing amongst the tables. A lost, lonely expression crosses his face as he glances around for someone, a friend perhaps? With a warm grin I wave him over to our table. He glances at me warily before smiling lightly and accepting the seat across from me.

The whispers fall silent as a young woman stands up. My attention turns to the head table when startled I noticed that Silas wasn’t amongst them. Heart dropping in hurt I manage to hold back tears as the woman smiles welcoming at us.

“Welcome, students. Both old and new! As the Headmistress had, unfortunately, been called away by important business it is my duty to welcome each of you to the new school year. Now then with that being said I wish you all a great year.” She grins at the first years and adds, a bit amused, “I like to congratulate the first years on being the largest class in our school’s history at seven students.”

The seven of us stare at her in a rather comic owl impression. The highest class is seven? Just how strong is this school! Were just a few thoughts racing through our minds. The other students simply laughed while some older ones shouted, “Then they should surpass us all...which will probably not happen.”

We turn to them and in unison shout back hotly, “We will too!”

The woman chuckles softly before rebuking, “Now, now students. Settle down.”

The glares went on for a few more seconds before finally we reluctantly went silent in order to head towards the buffet. However I lay my head down on the table as I felt a stinging pain sear through my spin. Breathing deeply a whimper escapes as I finally slip into my core in desperation to explain what this pain was coming from.

As I arrived to the library designed of my mind to witness such a phenomenon that sent fear crawling through every nerve. Shaking I watch, mortified, as a roaring inferno swept through the library. It consumed every memory in every book and just as it reaches to touch my mother’s statue a hand grabs the back of my shirt to pull me back as I scream in despair.

I watch unfeeling as a door closes behind me. Body numb with shock I couldn’t think of anything to say to this person. This woman who stands before me with worried eyes. She moves to touch my hand only for me to jerk back.

Suddenly as if a flame had been ignited with in me I shriek in sheer rage, “What did you do!? Why did you take me away! I could’ve saved her!” My hands balled tightly into fists as I tremble in rage and hurt. Tears prick the back of my eyes as she sighed softly.

“Alexis when you come out of here they will be unharmed. “ She starts to explain calmly while I turn my head away, unwilling to hear what she had to explain.

I notice a door left ajar to my left and curiously I take a step closer. She turns to the door and a disapproving frown appears on her face as she waves her hand foward; effectively slamming the door shut. Yet, I still managed a glimpse at what appeared as a chessboard. Confused I wondered the possibility of what the violet, red, and black pieces meant. Maybe she was just playing a game out of boredom? But why would there be three sides and who was playing with her? I hadn’t seen any other chairs.

“As I was saying, “ She firmly draws my attention back to her, “That fire represented the unlocking of your Lykra heritage. Rest assured your mindscape shall remain intact when you return.”

I scowl at her. “Who are you, anyways?” I snap rather rudely as I cross my arms. My eyes glare at her in distrust.

Her face turns to a weary, exasperated expression, “I am Victoria Angemon, your first ancestor.”

I notice then her eyes. The very same violet as my mother and I. They looked deep and shining eerily as if with the vast knowledge she undoubtingly possessed. Wincing at my own disrespect I muttered, “Forgive me for my rudeness, ma’am.”

She laughs softly in amusement, “Don’t worry, child. Most of your ancestors have done much worse when I first approach them. But for now it would be best for you to take a seat so I may explain what will happen as you awaken.”

Nodding quietly I shuffle slightly over to the couch where she sat. As I sit she begins to continue, “Because you’re a Lykra the power surge you were feeling before you entered will become very strong while we are here. That is why I pulled you in here. So you didn’t have to fight the pain and so I may speak to you of the changes.”

I wince as I remember the pain that had clawed at me before arriving here. With a slight nod to show I understood I ask softly, “So what will change?”

She smiles warmly, “Well your magic will now be very hard to control. I’ll have to teach you to control it while I am here to guide you. I’ll be able to stay in your mind until you can finally control the magic. Also you will need to keep fit in order to keep your body from using too much magic at one time. That may cause your body to shut down if you don’t keep yourself in shape.”

I flinch at the thought and agreed somewhat begrudgingly. It wasn’t the thought that bothered me, rather the fact I didn’t like many forms of exercise. As of yet the only one I found even somewhat appealing was Gymnastics and that had not been allowed at my old school.

“Is there anything you have?” I ask quickly pulling myself from my thoughts.

Smiling she nods, “You will feel the need to create something with your magic once you awaken. Don’t fight it just allow it to happen. Also I give you a bit of research to do.”

I stare in dread at her sly grin that broke on her face. I knew i wasn’t going to like this so called “research”.

“I want you to try to find out as much about me as you can without using the book of knowledge. The only thing from that book you may use is our family tree. Do you understand?”

I wince. That would be hard to accomplish. Not impossible, of course, just very difficult. But nonetheless I wanted a challenge and with a grin I accepted.

“Alright I believe it’s time for you to go back. It’s been several hours.” She mutters distractedly as she glances uneasily at the door to our left.

With a nod I get up and head to the door. Just as I step out I hear her murmur to herself, “Don’t forget, child. I love you.”

Heart swelling with joy I smile at her. As I fall back into the darkness I hear Silas calling my name with worry.
May the gentle moon take you into peaceful dreams. May the mighty sun brighten your new days.
