Mercury

Koron and Mercury were about to move themselves down the pulsating corridors, before a sleek and smooth gilding sound emanated from the room the two had just exited. Peeking his head around the corner of the rivet, the blonde guard analysed the changes in the room, and it appeared that the left of the room had opened, leading into a small metal box; an elevator was the best guess Mercury could think of. “Hey, Koron, in here.”

Koron, followed Mercury back into the humming computer room, turning and gazing upon the metal cage that had revealed itself. It certainly seemed like an elevator, but there was no way of being sure. “What the hell was that back there? “ Koron had finally spoken, breaking the awkward silence between the two.

“You seriously expect me to just answer that question? If I told you the truth, what would happen next? I’ve a gun, and you’ve not, ergo: we’d have a fatality on our hands.”

“And we wouldn’t have earlier?”

“Hm. Well, now, that you mention it...” Mercury paused, snatching his secondary pistol from his belt and cocking it, then handing it to Koron. “Look, I’m going to make this easy for you. Kill me and save your precious group, or let me live and continue to endanger all of your lives. Simple decision huh? No-brainer? Come on, pull the trigger already!”

“No.”

Mercury smiled on the inside, he knew Koron could not kill him like this; he knew that the man had suffered too many losses already, and although his treacherous ally could be a liability to the whole team, his compassion made it impossible to just shoot Mercury like that. Like a dog. “Exactly.”

Koron sighed deeply, loading the gun into his own belt now. “I won’t lower myself to your level, Mercury. You’re childish and reckless; you haven’t experienced enough to realise violence and destruction are not the only ways to solve conflict and obstacles.”

“Whatever.” Mercury retorted, bitterly, refusing to be spoken in such a manner. His pride was much too inflated to be let down by Koron’s lectures (despite the fact the man had spoken the straight truth on most of the times).

Suddenly, a screeching scream echoed from the floors below the two men, startling them both. “That’s Zephyr! Let’s go, they’re in trouble!” Koron spoke quickly, anticipation coating his words.

“Let’s not waste any time then, Mercury huffed, pushing his on-off ally into the elevator, before rapidly examining the buttons lining the side of the box. A large ‘G’ caught Mercury’s eye; undoubtedly representing the word ‘ground’. “It’s gotta be the ground floor. It’s our best shot.”

“I agree,” Koron nodded.

The elevator shot down at an alarming speed, and both occupants grasped the side rails of the otherwise stark steel box. In a second or so the elevator had stopped, wrenching the two up and down, causing Koron’s jaw to bash onto the solid metal bar he had clung to for, ironically, protection.
The doors slid open, and a sight of chaos had greeted them; a large tear in the steel wall that Mercury had discovered earlier had opened up, inside it laid Cancer, unconscious again; Zephyr had begun to recoil in fear as a group of Borg had started advance towards the three; Logan could not move, he seemed... genuinely afraid. As Mercury gazed downwards, Leah was biting her fingers in intensity, but as she noticed Koron, she released a gurgle of delight.

“Yeah, hey there kid,” said Mercury, quietly, before turning to the occupants in the portal to the darkness beyond. “Get out of there!” He yelled, standing aside for Koron to take a few shots to suppress the oncoming Borg. Zephyr turned, and Mercury wasted no time in snatching her from the void and hauling her over into the elevator shaft.

“You bastard!”

Koron was taking his time moving the now unconscious Cancer and Logan. Mercury was struggling to handle Zephyr; she was trying to squirm away from him, being as stubborn as she was. “Stop squirming,” he hissed trying to get the young woman to calm down. She stopped.

As Mercury let go of her hands in compliance with her obedience, she instantly began to yell and thump at his chest in emotional torture, finally allowing all the build up to well over.

This is my chance to make these fools think I’m on their side.

As if vindictiveness had taken over him, he hugged Zephyr tightly, as if in an embrace, one that merely camouflaged him as a member of the team; they still couldn’t stop themselves from trusting him could they? It was pathetic. This thought brought a demonic smile to Mercury’s face, his eyes narrowing devilishly, and his lips curving into a line of deceit and trickery.

His face snapped back to its original uncaring look as the other four entered the elevator, releasing Zephyr as he did so. Still faking a friendly demeanour towards all in the group, Mercury apologised with his eyes to the father, knowing some form of damage would follow, and it did. The soldier took the blow with unnatural tolerance, merely laughing it off.

Cancer

Cancer awoke, head throbbing. He pulled himself upright against the uncomfortable sides of the elevator, exhaling heavily as he did so.
Mercury glanced down at him, and with a wink said "You sleep okay?"
Cancer did not return his gaze, merely staring at his own hands.
"Thought you were a terrible person who wanted us all dead?" he replied, "Or had I grossly misinterpreted your attempts at our murder?"
Mercury grinned, flicking his eyes between each of the elevator's occupants.
"Maybe we should put this behind us?" Mercury suggested, rocking on his heels like a little boy. Cancer stared up at him with eyes unfeeling, contemplating whether or not to play it safe and snap his neck where he stood.
In the end, it was Leah's presence which forced his hand. She'd seen enough; Mercury could keep his head, at least for a while.

Koron

Now that the group was back together, they now decided to plan their course of action. The tunnel had two ways to go, back to the elevator shaft or somewhere which could possibly endanger them still, and seeing as how Koron wanted the group, even Mercury, to stay alive, the elevator was not an option. He was about to lead the way when a loud crashing sound emerged from the elevator. The sound repeated two more times. All of a sudden, a cybernetic hand emerged from left metal door followed by it wrenching sideways to the right. leaving shredded metal in it's wake. A pulsing sound emerged from the elevator as if something was charging. Two small cylinder shaped objects came from the damaged door and exploded in a flash of white light. Koron collapsed to the floor in pain. Too late had he realised that they were flash grenades, designed to stun and blind the opposition. He opened his eyes and found that he couldn't see, the light burnt into his retina. Or at least in one of his eyes. His cybernetic eye had no problem blocking out the light, but he had woken up to find a multi-module tactical Borg drone above him. It bristled with weapons, wrist mounted grenade launchers and blades and shoulder mounted machine guns. They were the elite. The best of the best and they were used for taking out high priority threats. We must really have old two face scared then, Koron thought. He kicked out at the leg of the Borg drone above him and sent it tumbling. He was relieved that Cancer had done the same, thanks to his implants. Mercury had surprised him though as he was struggling with another one of the Borg. Whether he had recovered more quickly due to being used to it, or sheer bloody determination, Koron could not say but he felt grateful.

"Run!" Koron shouted to Logan and Zephyr. Logan went to pick up Leah who still had not opened her eyes and was crying, almost screeching. It was clear that the child had suffered more than the rest of them. Koron, Mercury and Cancer obstructed the Borg as they went to go for Logan.

"If you want them, you have to go through us!" Mercury shouted, not bothering to hide his anger. Three against three. Fair odds.

Mercury

His hatred had boiled over, and the rage inside him flared like a great bonfire. A drone that had just appeared lept at Cancer, and the cyborg had fell down, but Mercury lifted the heel of his boot into the head of the Borg that pinned Cancer to the ground. Snatching his 45. revolver from Koron's pocket he then shot six rounds in quick succession, all of which made a sound like struck iron on an anvil as they pierced through the drones face and tore the circuitry apart.

Cancer had managed to haul himself up as another of the Borg had straightened up, but its machine gun had started to squeal as it spun. Without thought, so it seemed, Cancer sprinted towards it, lowering his shoulder and plowing into the Borg's torso. The two tumbled to the ground and shots rang out as rounds crashed against the ceiling.

Koron was busy dealing with a Borg that had managed to get up close, with razor-sharp wrist blades designed to cut through any kind of hide, and skin was no different. Mercury decided the best thing was to go and help the other three, he was sure that Koron and Cancer could handle themselves.

Cancer

Cancer tackled the borg almost without thinking. The rattle of its weapon shook his body as momentum carried them both into the tunnel wall. Cyborg and android collapsed into a bundle, a tangle of limbs both organic and mechanical. The sound of bullets skipping across the hard floor rang in Cancer's head, eliciting a grimace of displeasure as he struggled to keep the borg from bringing that weapon to bear on him.
With a click of mechanisms buried deep within its steel carapace, the borg succeeded in lifting its arm a fraction. Cancer could feel his strength ebbing, so took a gamble on releasing its arm to put two strong hands on either side of its head. With a twist, he snapped its neck, severing crucial circuitry and disabling the lethal android, but not before a round from its weapon penetrated his shoulder, shattering bone and throwing him backward across the tunnel to collide with Koron's legs. The man let out a frantic cry and fell with a thud onto Cancer's shoulder, which, already broken, tore through the surrounding flesh and caused him to scream.
Elite killing machines encircled them as the pair struggled for some kind of cohesion. Cancer flashed a sheepish look at Koron, but the latter didn't see it until it was replaced by another snarl of pain.
This was going to take some form of miracle.

Mercury

This situation was quickly becoming a nightmare: the three Borg that had been confronted had become four, regardless that two had been destroyed not even a minute ago. Cancer and Koron lie behind the circling wall of the elite Borg drones, and Mercury was completely phased as to how getting either of them away was possible without a fatality. Logan stood with Zephyr and Leah, but as the two females were struck with horror, there was dim realisation in Logan's eyes that spoke of giving up, yet this was not an option for him, if Mercury had known any better.

Mercury tried to think quickly, but this was something he was not good at, not at all, but he was shocked when the father stepped to his side in help, in support. The man smiled at Mercury, and the soldier returned with a smirk of his own: it seemed as if Logan had a plan.

Mercury

Mercury slammed his heel into the exposed knee joint of the Borg whose back faced him, and the leg gave way slightly, enough for the combined shove of both Logan and Zephyr to hurtle it forwards, landing on top of Cancer, who shielded his face with his fusion of metal and flesh arms. Perhaps in panic, or possibly exceptionally rapid realisation, the cyborg pushed the drone with his feet, and it stumbled into its ally, which too became unstable.

Seeing his opportunity, Koron rolled away, Cancer not too far behind, and leaped behind the two struggling Borgs, allowing the other pair to fire in panic. The two lasers hit the droid in front, and it fell lifelessly on top of its clone with a heavy 'clunk'.

"FRIENDLY FIRE DETECTED: READJUSTING AIMING ASSIST."

Taking the short space of time available, Cancer lunged with a fist and destroyed the jaw of one of the security robots, but fell to one side as the resistance of the hit the disoriented him. His screams of agony confirmed that he was in severe pain, but none of the others could get to him without possibility of wounding themselves.
Zephyr squatted, holding Leah safely as the feud continued, whispering words of comfort in her ear, but Mercury couldn’t worry about those two; he had work to do.
Logan pinned the supine Borg, ensuring it couldn’t move itself to assist its fellow combatant, yet this effort was in vain. A scratch of metal revealed a feet-long blade, and he rolled back off of the droid in surprise, and regrouped with Mercury and Koron, who were now conspiring how to remove the final two enemies.

“Wait, you still have that blade from the combat droids earlier, right?” Mercury inquired. Koron checked his pockets.

Koron

"Wait, you still have that blade from the combat droids earlier, right?" Mercury asked, the advanced borg drones closing in, weapons primed.

"No, even better," Koron replied and pulled out the mining laser, the one that he had used, what felt like a century ago. As Mercury and him were sneaking out, Koron had noticed the piece of equipment. It had been ready to be equipped onto a mining droid. Koron doubted that it would've been missed. Aiming more on instinct, something that had helped him more than once, he fired. The first shot hit the droid's right knee and the second hit where it's left elbow would've been. Both parts scorched and sizzled, the circuitry fried, causing the droid to buckle and collapse but still writhing as it tried to complete it's designated programming. Koron's aim was ajar as he fired at the second remaining droid, as it had fired upon seeing the new weapon in play and a round pierced his shoulder, causing the laser to merely glance his attacker's head. Koron fell to the floor, shock and blood loss setting in.

I've done all I can, it's up to them now, he thought as unconsciousness took hold.
