Chapter 5
I sit down at the base of the tree. It was a respectable distance from the girls who eye me warily. With Hisoka standing where we landed looking at them in fear I knew this needed to be eased soon.
“Alright you three. Since I am now technically your guardians its only right that we attempt to trust each other in time. So I believe we should get to know each other.” I begin warmly and am happy to note the girls seemingly to be willing to attempt this at least.
“I’ll go first, “ I continue softly, “My name is Evelyn Nagori. You may call me whatever you wish so long as it is not degrading or just plain insulting. My goal for now is to teach you to protect yourself while also mastering Healing, Swordsmanship, Sealing, and Summoning. I dislike people who misjudge others and the color gray.”
I notice that one of the girls seems to relax after I spoke of my dislikes. Her eyes confuse me for they were the very star shaped pupil as mine but instead of the dark amethyst mine were they were a vibrant red. I considered the possibility of another mother making a similar sacrifice as mine shortly after a left but decided it was probably just because of the bloodline.
Nodding towards her I gently encourage, “It’s your turn, little one. Say as much as you want. There is no rush in trusting others.” My smile seems to win her over for she lets me see a very subtle curve of her lips.
She twists a lock of black hair around her finger while mumbling. I chuckle softly and chide, “Speak up for us to hear.”
Paling she glances at me and then at the ground. “My name is Perdita and I hate nuts.” Glancing around at the three of us she says so fiercely that I was impressed, “I love Mother and being out at night.”
Intrigued by who this Mother was I decided to ask her of this later. Meanwhile I nod and turn to the other girl who scowls darkly.
“My name is Amana. I like foxes and hate snakes.” She shortly responds while twisting a loose strand of cloth from her black sweater.
“My name is Hisoka. I don’t like loud, crowded places but I do like fruits.”
I smile softly at that. In our short time I had noticed that he seemed to prefer fruits over meat but was willing to eat meat if that was all there. With an internal heavy sigh I push myself up from the trunk and cheerfully state, “Well be might as well go on. We need to reach a town by tonight in order to buy some supplies.”
I could tell they were confused but inclined follow behind me. As we traveled I made a list of what we’d need. I knew for certain we would need some blank scrolls, several clothes, and food. As for weapons I did not yet trust them to handle such dangerous weaponry but training them in using such items would be vital before the Exams in a year.
The smell of smoke hits my senses as her voice shrieks in my head, ‘Why don’t you just destroy the clan? Just like those people are doing to that failure of a town. They don’t need you.’
Jerking slightly I stop at the top of the hill to see warriors burning down an allied town. Growling at Yami in refusal I order the children to stay here as I rush ahead. I had to do something to help. It was better than letting it happen. As I entered the fight I whisper, “Kinen Seal: Reflection.”
My once dark eyes turn to a bright gold as I stared into the eyes of one of the attackers. With my arms pinning him against the ground I begin to see what started this mutinous stand off.
