I realize that there can be many interpretations of this piece so please tell me what you think! I'll put my intended interpretation in a spoiler so you can read it after.
The Winged Freak

She always dreamed she could fly.
She dreamed she had angel wings,
shimmering silver and eight-feet wide.
It was on these magnificent appendages that she soared
from tree and mountain tops.
The birds spoke to her and greeted her as family,
a feeling foreign to her soul.

Sometimes she wasn’t asleep when it happened.
Sometimes she would take off without warning
and she would soar for a time.
And then she would land,
always in a white bed with white sheets.
Always there were men and women
clothed in all white looking down at her.

She would tell them excitedly,
“I can fly. I flew here!”
They would look down on her,
shake their heads in pity,
and leave.
She was content to fall asleep and fly again.

Spoiler

There is a program at my school called Best Buddies. Students join and are paired up with a mentally disabled kid of the same age and you're friends for the rest of the year. I was paired with this one girl and everyday I saw her, she told me that she could fly. Some people thought she was stupid. I didn't. This is dedicated to her.
The words you write reflect your soul. Make every word count.

Bravo! This was absolutely beautiful! Best Buddies is a wonderful program! And I really think you should show her this; she would really be happy if you did. ^_^ Reading this made me believe she could fly too.
Reading is the sole means by which we slip,
involuntarily,
often helplessly,
into another's skin,
another's voice,
another's soul.

This poem is so beautiful. It's the only poem I've read in a while that's almost made me cry. Even before I read the spoiler I sensed that there was something else behind this poem, something amazing, something beautiful.

She always dreamed she could fly.
She dreamed she had angel wings,
shimmering silver and eight-feet wide.
It was on these magnificent appendages that she soared
from tree and mountain tops.
The birds spoke to her and greeted her as family,
a feeling foreign to her soul.

This is my favorite part of the poem. It really makes me think of the girl being able to fly, and flying away to somewhere she loves. It's a wonderful thing to think of.

I don't have any criticisms. This is an amazing, inspiring poem. I love it.

Keep writing!!!

Wow. That was quite good. I love the way that this poem makes me think. there are so many ways interpretations that could come of this. The way that I like to think of it is that she is slightly mentally ill and she is in an institute, dreaming of flying away into her own world. Anyway, i really enjoyed it.

This is so beautiful! That you dedicated this to a mentally ill girl is just so sweet! As for the poem it was incredible too! Nicely written stanzas with lines sparkling with imagery, the flow and rythm was great and you used punctuation which is a big plus in my world! The end line was really beautiful and tied the piece together smoothly! Nice job!

For being such a good and kind friend, and for writing a very, very sweet poem I'll give you 5/5 icky, sticky spiders! Give the girl a hug from me!

Good Luck & Keep Writing

"Some say the world will end in fire;
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice." - Robert Frost
