“Alright, we’ve been through this before.”
I nodded, struggling to look as brave as I possibly could; but my mind refused to lie. My spirit and pride were battling inside my numb body.
“You know the drill.” His words seemed to brush past my ears that had been deafened by the unbearable drumming- that pounding- of my pulse.
“This is what you want, remember?”
All I could do was nod, for fear had taken over me and I had lost the ability to let my lips part and utter out a single sound.
No turning back.
I closed my eyes so that I could imagine myself in a different place where I hadn’t made this dreadful choice.
My thoughts took me to a place where I was happy- where my life was everything it had never been, where someone loved me, where I was not alone….where I was free.
The birds, perched in a tree so high that it seemed as though I was looking directly into the Sun, sang above me. I could see them and I could see their vibrating chests as they chirped their high-pitched songs that blocked out that 'pop'.
The 'pop' that eneded it all.
When everything went dark, when that intense and dazzling brightness disappeared, I noticed that I was gone. Gone from the merry get-away world I had been taken to through my imagination.
I found myself in a long corridor- no, more like a tunnel- that led me back to that bright world. I walked towards the light but found that it was moving further away from me.
Confused, I persisted and ran, ran towards that blinding light. I cried because I didn’t want to stay behind, I wanted to go to that new world without hesitating.
No turning back, ever.
