For all of you who read Dream Deep's Pop Culture essay should read this. For those of you who didn't comment on Pop Culture, do not read this.


First of all, I agree with evertything that Dream Deep said. It doesn't matter who in the popular culture people try to emulate, the pop culture drives teenagers to act a certain way. The whole group of people who espouse trying to copy these people are the real kids in the eyes of the pop culture.

For you to say that people are not like this, just look at the public schools. The hip people are those who everyone else tries to copy. The unreal kids, the people who could care less, are unreal because they are not what the popular culture says they should be.
I think that you should think on this before commenting because Dream Deep's essay is basically a social commentery, based on what she's seen in today's world.

I can't speak for the entirety of YWS. But - I did comment - and the problem with Dream Deep's commentary was that it was obscure, unclear in word definition and in form. Good thoughts - but they weren't understood, and a lot of that was in the clarity of the enumeration.

All of what you said - I agree. But what you said was taken for granted in "Pop Culture". I didn't see it, because it wasn't explained.

I think the entire wish to comment on the mess that is commonly pop culture was brilliant. If she ravamps it, and clarifies, it'll be very apt.

YWS' denizens are rabidly critical at times. Don't take it too hard - they don't mean it; it's habit and tradition. ^_~

Her essay was, as Imp said, unclear, and made generalizations that are unfair. Her terminology is also quite insulting and actually innacurate. She did not say "In the eyes of pop culture," as far as I remember.

Couldn't care less about what? Things that really don't matter, that are fun but not important?

Here are the dictionary definitions of real and unreal:

real:Genuine and authentic; not artificial or spurious: real mink; real humility.
Being no less than what is stated; worthy of the name: a real friend.
Free of pretense, falsehood, or affectation: tourists hoping for a real experience on the guided tour.

unreal:1: lacking in reality or substance or genuineness; not corresponding to acknowledged facts or criteria
2: not actually such; being or seeming fanciful or imaginary

If you go by these definitions, these so-called "unreal" kids are actually very real. They are being true to who they are. They are being genuine and authentic.

Wait until you get a little older and start to see the world through a more mature lens. At fifteen, people think they're all grown up, but the brain continues to develop even up to about twenty years old.

And in the future, if you dislike what people have said about a piece of writing, it's not really appropriate to post a topic about it. There are no rules against it, but there are better ways of handling it. We are entitled to our opinions. Post yours in her essay. Besides, this forum is for pieces of creative writing that do not fit a particular category. Topics like this belong in the Lounge.

Read what I said. I said that her essay did not say that, as far as I recall. And the actual author of the essay accepted our critizism without a problem. There is no reason why you should have a problem, older brother or not.

I can't help but laugh at the title of this thread, because, by its very nature, will make many of the prominent members of YWS avoid it altogether. The funny thing is, were GriffinKeeper or Snoink or Smaur to stop by, they would have a lot to say.

PLEASE try to keep this civil in your discussion, Reas and Rei...respect and be respected here.

Definitely. My last response was just out of annoyance because it showed that he didn't properly read what I had said. This is a site where we can sometimes get very brutal critizism. But the intentions are always to help each other, never to hurt.
