I've got something... and I know it might sound like complaining but I just really want to get it off my chest so thank you for having a place for it!
I feel like no one takes my writing seriously. No family members, anyway. Friends kinda do, as much as friends will. But, like, I say I want to write and my family is either like "Whatever, sure" or "You know you're not going to make any money so you might as well dump it." But I'm serious. I want to write more than anything. And if I try to show that I CAN write, they kinda laugh or just don't get my story ideas. It's really... disheartening. I have some friends who write, and they think it sounds good, but I don't know... I wish my family would get it. I'm 20 and I still want to write so I wish they'd just take it seriously- it's not a hobby. It's something I seriously want to do.
Any advice on making them understand?
Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.
If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it. Anything you want to, do it! Wanna change the world? There's nothing to it.
The best way to be honest is to make some money. It will take time and it's hard to go for it without their support but until they see you with a pay check in hand, they're still going to be uncertain. I think mine didn't take me seriously until I started talking about how the publishing and editorial systms work and then they realied I knew a lot about it and that I really intended to take it to a career. It helps that I'll soon be able to produce a copy of the YWS lit. journal which I co-edited. So get out there and write, then give it time and hope that one day you can say 'I told you so' :p
