I'm Dugas (silent "s"!) and I just joined. Erm, I don't really know what I'm supposed to put here, so I'm just going to fill up space I guess. I'll be 16 Tuesday, I live in south Louisiana and no, I don't ride an alligator to school ;)

I've just recently gotten back into the habit of writing, so all of my stuff is probably going to be crap and I'll edit it constantly. I used to write a lot when I was younger (horses and fairies and fanfiction, oh my!) but middle school and being a freshman crushed my soul.

Anyways I write short stories and nature-related nonfiction. I'm addicted to spicy food, herbal tea, and baklava. My favorite genre to read is horror but I've yet to write any. Neil Gaiman and Gerald Durrell are my heroes.

Also also, does anyone have tips on reviewing? I don't want to ever come off as mean, but I don't want to butt-pat everyone all the time either.

Neil Gaiman is epic.

Gerald Durrell stinks. Well, he wouldn't stink so bad if he spent less time describing dung feces and the like.

Welcome to YWS!

In terms of reviewing tips, outline flaws without insulting the writing. More importantly, work out what the author did right. To write a story is not to avoid wrong. If you can work out all the right things to do and still do a whole bunch of wrong things, you'll do well as a writer. When you're reviewing you're as much honing your own skills as you are the recipient of your review's.

Horses!

*ahem*

Greetings, non-alligator-riding mortal, and welcome to Yewis. ^_^

When reviewing, it's good to always mention something nice, and say the bad stuff in a positive way. Men In Tights springs to mind.

Neil Gaiman is epic, and I love Gerard Durrell! He's so funny. XD

See you around!

It's good that you don't habitually ride alligators. (Although, it might make an amusing children's tale.) 'Round here everyone is a bit eccentric; seems all writers are.

So, is Louisiana much different from Florida?

Besides weather, Louisiana is very different :) Florida has the Everglades, but we have the Atchafalaya basin and it's a lot more wild with a lot less tourists. You can kayak through it without seeing another person. South Louisiana has two major cultures: Cajuns and Creoles. The Cajuns were French settlers exiled from Nova Scotia and the Creoles were the African/Haitian slaves. Because of them we have a very unique culture. From the Cajuns, most Christians here are a very unique form of Catholic, we have faith healers called Traiteurs that are very popular, we have Cajun French, lots and lots of oral stories, all the plantations, some weird superstitions, and Mardi Gras. From Creoles we have Voodoo, Hoodoo, black Baptists, more superstitions and folklore, zydeco music, another French language variation, and most of our awesome food like gumbo (a stew made with pretty much anything, but usually sausage and you eat it with rice), cracklins (fried pig fat) and boudin (rice, meat, and a bunch of other stuff packed into a sausage skin). And then there's the Native Americans, but I don't know a lot about them other than our biggest tribe, the Houma, have been struggling to get federal recognition for a long time, and the Atakapa used to be cannibals and were a big reason it took so long for people to try and settle the Chenier plain. Back to comparing with Florida, we don't have a lot of beaches and the ones we do are pretty dirty and you can see the oil drills in the distance. Oil influences our state a lot, not just the economy, but about half the people who live here work with something involving the oil industry. My dad manages offshore paramedics, for example. Louisiana has very little diversity, most of the time you'll only see whites, blacks, or Vietnamese. There's a lot more poverty here than in Florida, and our school system is HORRIBLE. We're the worst states for obesity, heart disease, and STDs, but we're the happiest state behind Hawaii :D

Sorry about all that, I love my state and can talk about it for hours.
