The Aisles began to come into my sight as I quickened my pace. The Aisles consisted of three different sections; the Kings Court, Nobles, and Dishes. Madame Quincy was residing in the upper area of the Kings Court. There the trees are always in blossom, consistently swaying in the wind, dancing to the rhythm of the bards tune. The sunlight nourishes the land, allowing it to be fertile and dark with health. It’s as if the streets are paved with an undying gold, forever dedicated to its privileged citizens. The lakes are filled to the brim with the freshest and finest water, crisper than the loveliest of hazelnuts.
I glimpse sight of a gang of Light Bearers, around twenty, before I dash to safety behind a tree. I try to steady my breathing to a steady beat as the Light Bearers pass by, jesting about how many peasants they’d saved from rabid squirrels.
I consider revealing myself to explain to them that the squirrels aren’t truly “rabid,” but instead have a mild case of Degwits. An awful disease that causes foaming and uncanny rashes.
The group passes by and I quickly maneuver closer to the wall leading to the Kings Court. I skillfully and easily slip over the wall without causing a scene or being noticed.
It doesn’t take me long to find my way to Madame Quincy’s room, she left me very specific instructions as to how she wanted me to enter the room at a certain point of the day.
I’ve never been one for instructions so I had the pleasure of opening the door without being expected. The room reeked of wasted wealth, perfumes effortlessly floating in the air. The paintings draped on the walls were ones of a very heavyset woman with a thick golden mane. Nausea began to come over me at the sight of this woman’s gluttony.
Madame Quincy was still sound asleep in her majestic bed, regardless of the hour. I took a seat on the futon across from the bed and took out my knife.
“Oh dear me, it seems I’ve forgotten that Mrs. Nobility is a pig who enjoys sleeping while the rest of the world is slaving away.” I said these words loudly and with every intent to awaken the slumbering woman.
Madame Quincy began to stir and mumble to herself as she began to awaken. Her eyes finally settled on me and she sat in a cold tone attempting to hint her embarrassment,
“I was told you’re one of the best, if that’s the case what in the Kings name are you doing here now! I said for you to meet me at a quarter past three!”
I took in a breathe of air and gave her a look that a parent would give to a child that’s just been caught for eating all the cookies and is now in need of a beating.
“Did you really? I truly cannot recall that tidbit of information. After all the best don’t like to be delayed. I thought you were one of the best ladies in waiting around? I must’ve been getting my information from the wrong source if you’d rather sleep around all day. That’s a sign of the weak.”
I allowed my voice to become cold and I dragged my dagger across my fingernails, sharpening them.
Madame Quincy shivered and climbed out of bed then turned to me as she began to dig around for a silk robe. “Well if you insist on beginning now then you better follow me.”
“Wait a minute, I don’t blindly do a job. I’d appreciate being told what you want from me. I’d hate to have wasted my morning getting over here for nothing.” Madame Quincy was beginning to show her fear to me, something that should always be kept hidden.
A good thief always knows to keep their true emotion intact and hidden. When you can no longer control how others perceive you then you have something to fear. Never ever reveal your weaknesses or what makes you tick.
Madame Quincy obviously hadn’t ever heard how showing fear can destroy a person within mere moments. She was allowing me to easily gain the upper hand in our business relationship, and I was only getting warmed up.
She patted her head warily and sat down on a chair that was beside me. She looked as vulnerable as she must’ve been feeling. This early in the morning she was not at all in her regal attire, and neither was her face yet in all its glory and powder.
“I need you to help me with a problem.” She started to say before I cut her off,
“What kind of problem? A person, animal, robber... unfinished business?” I laughed as I began to daze off and imagine all the ridiculous things people had tried to get me to do in the past.
“It’s a person, my son actually.” She stopped and gazed into my eyes, catching me off guard.
“I want you to teach my son your survival skills.” I stood up, something like this wasn’t something that someone asked a thief like me for.
“My skills?” I took a breathe of air in as she went on.
“Yes! You see he’s pure of heart, too pure of intent for what I have planned. So I need you to change his perspective!” I started at her incredulously.
“Your plans?” I asked flabbergasted, still trying to regain control of my voice tones.
“Why would I tell you my master plan?” She asked and began to laugh as if it was the most hilarious joke ever told by the finest jester.
“I need you to do this in a matter of three weeks time. However you will need to find a way to get into my sons heart before he’ll truly trust you,” she started at me and sniffed the air disgusted.
“You will also be taking a bath and dressing appropriately. My son is not fond of woman bearing stench.” I knew that I reeked however a thief typically takes pride in our smell, it shows that we are truly one of the night.
“What is the price that you will pay me? To be rid of my natural smell you must have a rather large sum in mind?”
Madame Quincy smiled most sinisterly, “Oh yes little thief, a rather large sum indeed.”
Spoiler
This part of the chapter was mostly dialogue, my weak point.
So please do keep that in mind as you review. Also feel free to take a look at my other works, it'd be greatly appreciated!
