Okay... This is my first post - Ever. So sorry :| Please, don't be too harsh >.<

The blackness of a dreamless slumber started to subside as I started to hear all the screaming and the shouting again. My stomach was twisting and turning inside out, I thought I was going to be sick. I sighed, then rolled over onto my stomach in my bed and pulled a pillow over my ears to try and drown out the surplus noise. As I held tightly onto the corners of the pillow, tears started rolling down off my face, in time with the slamming doors. I guess Dad has gone again.

I jumped out of bed, flicked the tears off my face with the back of my hand and practised my smile in the mirror. Then I opened the door and strode over to my mum, who was slumped in a corner of the living room.
She was decorated with a black eye and was holding her hands over her ears, rocking backwards then forwards, silently crying. Her pain was echoing around the room in screams.

I sat next to her, ruffled her hair, whilst repeating the same lie over and over again, “Don't worry, Everything will be fine.” She slowly peeled her hands away from her ears and looked at me through her watery eyes, I kneeled in front of her and looked straight into her eyes, I showed her a big smile and told her that I love her.

With that, everything would continue, we could carry on, as normally as we could, until that man (My Dad) came back again.

I went to check up on my sister, who seemed quite oblivious to what was going on. She was just playing on her computer, ignoring the fact that I was the one calming everyone down. But that's okay, it's just how it is.

Amelia, is my sisters name, she's 23 and has Autism. She also has M.E so we rarely go outside with her, as soon as she even walks really slowly for five minutes.. she's bed bound for two weeks. So now we stay in a lot more and none of us really speak to each other unless we're fighting.

At 2am the next morning, I heard the front door squeak, then slam shut, and a shadow creep inside.
I walked out to find my drunken dad, swaying a bottle of vodka and picking up some of his clothes off the floor.

“Why did you come back?” I asked him through stifled tears, peaking over the brim of my eyes.
He turned round and looked at me through the darkness, “I've got get some clean clothes sometime, darling.”
“So you didn't come back for us then?” I said with a icy cold gaze, not that anyone would be able to tell, through the pitch blackness, but I knew he could sense it.

He sighed and staggered towards me, he held the bottle and the bag of clothes in one hand and he started to stroke my hair, before hitting me hard around my head. I was lying on the floor when he stepped over me and started to walk towards the front door once again, but as he went he started muttering “That stupid girl, doesn't seem to know what respect is.” “Why couldn't she just be someone else, then I wouldn't have to punish her like that.”

I stayed on the ground for what felt like only a little while, just looking into nothing and feeling empty and cold.
I heard my mum's alarm clock go off, it must be 6 'o clock already! I pulled myself off the floor, dusted myself off, then silently rushed back to my room.

I pulled open my draw in my cupboard, and got out my stash of concealers, then I gathered the rest of my make-up and started to dab it all over the stinging bruises on my face and body. Just as I was finished, my mum came down the stairs. she asked If Dad had come back in the night, because she had heard noises coming from downstairs. I just smiled sadly and replied with “No, He must just be off somewhere thinking.” “Don't worry, He'll come back soon and everything will be just fine.” I smiled again, for effect, then walked away to get ready for school.

Welcome YWS! I hope you will enjoy it here.

Just one question before I begin. Is this supposed to be a novel or just a short story? I was posted under General Fiction Novels, so I thought I should just check. If it is click here to get some tips, if not I think you can get a moderator (the people with green names) to move it for you into the short story section.

Now for you story:

It's not a huge mistake, but you should try to use different words. I showed her a big smile and told her that I love her.

Amelia, is my sister's name, she's 23 Always spell out numbers when writting. and has Autism. She also has M.E What is M.E? so we rarely go outside with her, as soon as she even walks really slowly for five minutes.. she's bed bound for two weeks. That sentance sounds odd, you might want to make it clearer. So now we stay in a lot more and none of us really speak to each other unless we're fighting.

At 2am Again, spell it out.the next morning, I heard the front door squeak, then slam shut, and a shadow creep inside.
I walked out to find my drunken dad, swaying a bottle of vodka and picking up some of his clothes off the floor.

He sighed and staggered towards me, he held the bottle and the bag of clothes in one hand and he started to stroke my hair, before hitting me hard around I think on would sound better. my head. I was lying on the floor when he stepped over me and started to walk towards the front door once again, but as he went he started muttering “That stupid girl, You don't need a comma here. If you wanted a pause there you could probaly use an elipse (...) doesn't seem to know what respect is.” “ Get rid of the quotation marks here. Why couldn't she just be someone else, then I wouldn't have to punish her like that?

I stayed on the ground for what felt like only a little while, just looking into nothing and feeling empty and cold.
I heard my mum's alarm clock go off, it must be 6 six'o clock already! I pulled myself off the floor, dusted myself off You said 'myself off' twice. Try some else to switch it up., then silently rushed back to my room.

I pulled open my drawer in my cupboard, and got out my stash of concealers, then I gathered the rest of my make-up and started to dab it all over the stinging bruises on my face and body. Just as I was finished, my mum came down the stairs. She asked If Dad had come back in the night, because she had heard noises coming from downstairs. I just smiled sadly and replied with “No, He must just be off somewhere thinking.” “ Use quotation marks when the person begings to speak and the end, not in the middle. Don't worry, He'll come back soon and everything will be just fine.” I smiled again, for effect, then walked away to get ready for school.

I think the story is good, you just need to work on you puncuation.

Hope this helps!

If I weren't going to be a writer I'd go to New York and pursue the stage. Are you shocked?

As Joyce said, you need to work on your punctuation as well as your capatilization. However, forget the technical things.

This is an interesting plot. I like the fact that the child is comforting the mother rather than the other way around. That can be seen more and more in real life rather than the sacrificing mother, which makes it even sadder. I think that to make a deeper connection to the reader, you have to expose the fear of your MC and the anger about being in that situation. Basically you need to have a bit of an inner monologue in part of the story and play on the emotions.

It's interesting, but it could be better. Also, welcome to YWS!

Ciao! Hope you enjoy the site!

Okay, I'm very sorry, thank you. I didn't actually mean to put it in that one! Silly me :P

And finally for people who don't know what M.E is.. "The cardinal symptoms of ME are profound, generalised post-exertional loss of muscle power (fatigability); muscle pain that may include tenderness and swelling; and neurological signs. Patients are also prone to relapses which may take the form of recurrences of the original systemic illness, or fresh episodes of muscle weakness, neurologic changes or well-defined cognitive problems. As with many chronic illnesses, fatigue may be present, but in ME patients the fatigue is post-exertional, often delayed, and quite unlike the ‘fatigue’ experienced by healthy people." Hope that helps :)
