Spoiler
I just got off the phone with you
And something wasn't right
I wish that what I said was true
But I messed up tonight
I wished that you could understand the way
I felt when she looked at me today
Oh oh oh oh
Oh when did I start tearin' us apart?
I'm tearin' us apart
I just got off the phone with you
Like any other night
I know that I said I loved you too
But she was on my mind
I wish that you could understand the way
I felt when she looked at me today
Oh oh oh oh
Oh when did I start tearin' us apart?
I'm tearin' us apart
At this time in my life I have made up my mind
Everyone thinks that I'm crazy
But I cannot deny all these feelings inside
All I can say is that I'm sorry
I'm so sorry
I just got off the phone with you
I didn't even cry
I just did what I had to do
I had to say goodbye
I wish that you could understand the way
I felt when she looked at me today
Oh oh oh oh
Oh when did I start tearin' us apart?
I'm tearin' us apart
Understand the way
Looked at me today
Oh oh oh oh
Oh when did I start tearin' us apart?
I'm tearin' us apart
Oh oh oh oh
And something wasn't right
I wish that what I said was true
But I messed up tonight
I wished that you could understand the way
I felt when she looked at me today
Oh oh oh oh
Oh when did I start tearin' us apart?
I'm tearin' us apart
I just got off the phone with you
Like any other night
I know that I said I loved you too
But she was on my mind
I wish that you could understand the way
I felt when she looked at me today
Oh oh oh oh
Oh when did I start tearin' us apart?
I'm tearin' us apart
At this time in my life I have made up my mind
Everyone thinks that I'm crazy
But I cannot deny all these feelings inside
All I can say is that I'm sorry
I'm so sorry
I just got off the phone with you
I didn't even cry
I just did what I had to do
I had to say goodbye
I wish that you could understand the way
I felt when she looked at me today
Oh oh oh oh
Oh when did I start tearin' us apart?
I'm tearin' us apart
Understand the way
Looked at me today
Oh oh oh oh
Oh when did I start tearin' us apart?
I'm tearin' us apart
Oh oh oh oh
“Hey Wilma, remember when we went to Hawaii?” I asked through the phone. The tattered picture in my hand revealed Wilma and I smiling at the camera. It brought back loads of memories, from the arcade to school and playing in the back yard.. We'd known each other for as long as I could remember.
“Yeah, that was so fun!” She replied cheerfully. I could see her grinning face, but, for some reason, I couldn't smile back. A different picture had caught my eye and I had tossed the Hawaii picture carelessly onto the floor. Carefully picking up the new picture that had caught my notice – it was begging for attention – I scanned it.
A young girl grinned up at me. The way she was smiling, the way she was watching my every movement was... what was this odd feeling? Hm... I've seen this girl before... but where? I think that's... Oh, I remember know! An imaginary light bulb flashed above me. The grinning face certainly brought back something, but what? I stared at the picture until Wilma's voice knocked me out of my troubled thoughts.
“Hey, you still there? Did you fall asleep or something?”
“No, sorry, just spaced out. I gotta go, see ya.” I clicked the phone off without waiting for her response, still gazing dumbly at the picture.
I sighed, deep in thought. I can't believe I just hung up like that. Man, there's something wrong. Is it me? I think I've done something bad. I thought gloomily before my thoughts spun to the girl again.
She was still smiling silly, her fingers making the peace sign. Her stare was nerving, filling me up with an emotion that was different and unique. What was going on?
Absentmindedly, I scooped up the older picture with Wilma in it and slowly, inch by inch, ripped pieces off. I was so deep in my thoughts about the girl to the extent that I had no clue as to what I was doing.
Confused and astonished me stumbled around for the rest of the day.
As usual, I chatted on the phone with Wilma. I said good-bye half-heartedly, my thoughts were still tuned into the girl.
If only, I thought, Wilma could see that picture. No, she wouldn't get the same feeling of... of what? What's this feeling the picture keeps sending to me?
For the umpteenth time that day, I sighed, still unconsciously shredding the Hawaii photo into tiny pieces.
I didn't notice the wrecked picture until a few days later, when I had made up my mind. I called Wilma and apologized for ruining the picture, for destroying the beautiful image that was a precious as glass.
My explanation had been lame. I hadn't wanted to tell her that I had been thinking of a different picture when I ripped up the Hawaii one. So I just said it had gotten it ripped up.
She fell into a mass confusion frenzy when I had told her but ended up settling on anger. I tried, in vain, to make her understand, but she hung up on me in pure anger and annoyance.
My family didn't react any better. When I told them, they literally blew up in my face.
“You ripped that picture? But that vacation you two took was the best in your life!”
“We don't have it on the computer too! How can we get the photo back? It'll be impossible!”
My friends didn't help either.
“Are you stupid? That picture was everything to you! How can you just accidentally rip it up? Are you a retard? You'd have to be insane to be able to do something like that!”
I shrugged off their nasty comments and heartlessly threw away the remains of the Hawaii picture.
When did I start destroying it? I thought. I'd never do that! Wilma, if only she knew how I felt. Then it wouldn't matter if the picture was gone. I've found a new picture. It's gorgeous, beautiful, and better. Now, that Hawaii picture doesn't matter anymore.
The picture was gone and along with it, my connection to Wilma. I stared at the picture of the girl fondly, still wishing horribly for understanding.
